Rachel dies in bitterness. Jeremiah prophecies the grief of the mothers of Jerusalem will experience at the sack of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar and personifies it as Rachel weeping. A third use of the metaphor is the mothers whose babies are destroyed at Herod the Great’s command. ♫ Coventry Carol is 1 of 3 songs belonging to Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors, a Coventry Mystery play of the nativity. The only surviving copy of the play (and the song) is dated 1534. El Malei Rachamim (God full of compassion) is a Jewish prayer for the departed that is recited at funeral services, on visiting the graves of relatives (especially during the holy month of Elul), and after having been called up to the reading of the Torah on the anniversary of the death of a close relative. The prayer originated in the Jewish communities of Western and Eastern Europe and since the end of the Holocaust, the prayer has been adapted as a memorial prayer for the victims of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution. The full text (which has been freely adapted in this piece): O God, Who art full of compassion, who dwellest on high, grant perfect rest in Thy Divine Presence to all the souls of our holy and pure brethren whose blood was spilt by the murderers in Auschwitz, Belzec, Bergen Belsen, Dachau, Majdanek, Sobibor, Treblinka and other extermination camps in Europe; who were killed, strangled, burned and buried alive for the sanctification for Thy Name. For whose souls we now pray. May their resting place be in the Garden of Eden, may the Master of Mercy shelter them in the shadow of His wings for eternity; and may he bind their souls in the Bond of Live. HASHEM is their heritage, and may they repose in peace in their resting places. Now let us say: Amen This setting features of mix of traditional and contemporary composition methods to create a highly emotional and deeply meaningful experience for performer and listener. McKay (A0.1014330). Miserere Mei, Deus is a setting of Psalm 51 for a cappella choir, but it is no motet. It is an expressionistic piece in the horror genre, at times creepy and unsettling, at times dark and violent; it is extremely dramatic.The piece was commissioned for a concert commemorating the late-Renaissance composer Carlo Gesualdo. In it, Gesualdo implores God to have mercy on him for his murdering his wife and her lover in flagrante. He recalls the brutal slaughter, recreated in operatic Sprechstimme by half of the choir, while the other half wails and moans, but as he begs for forgiveness, his own words to his wife come back to haunt him: Pieta?! Non avra la mia pieta! (Mercy?! You will have no mercy from me!). He whips himself furiously and sinks to the floor exhausted, murmuring the groans for forgiveness that opened the work. It is left unresolved whether he has received forgiveness. .

Stewart (A0.955851). The popular Jalousie ‘Tango Tzigane’ (Jealousy ‘Gypsy Tango’) was written by Danish violinist, composer and conductor Jacob Gade in 1925. It was composed for the opening of the American silent film Don Q., Son of Zorro. Gade had been inspired by a newspaper account of a man who murdered his wife in jealous passion. This tango lives easily in two worlds; both ‘classical’ ensembles and those who perform ‘light’ music appreciate Gade’s creativity for its musicianship and audience appeal. This arrangement is for a 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment. Performance time: 2:40+ An interesting addition to a program of 7 deadly sin(g)s.
