That is one of the reasons I chose to set this text, it is a part of the story that is often left out. The other reason is that this it contains one of the first New Testament prophecies concerning Christ, the revelation that Jesus will save his people from their sins. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719738). As years come and go, one increasingly recalls memories of earlier times. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. For this series, I have mostly elected to use the older texts as that is the way they were first written and the way I first learned them. (See below for more comment on the texts in this set.) There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal/choral tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. I shudder to think of the day when a penitential phrase such as Hear thou my prayer, O Lord is rendered as Hey, God-dude, listen up - I'm talkin' atcha! I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. A caveat: I have no delusions, and I offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy to other church musicians. The hymns in this set are Children of the Heavenly Father, Day by Day, Thy Holy Wings, and Beautiful Savior. A note on the texts in this set: Having grown up in a Swedish Lutheran church, the grandson of Swedish/Norwegian immigrants, and currently being choir director of another Swedish Lutheran church, these hymns have a special place for me. This set was originally arranged for my church choir with the first verse of each in Swedish. Being under copyright, permission was obtained to use the more familiar English translations of the first three songs for local use. For this edition, I have opted to create my own texts for the first and third hymns while the second is a translation in public domain. I have also provided a verse in English in lieu of the Swedish for those Nordically challenged. The fourth hymn is not a Swedish melody but for obvious reasons is a mainstay of the Lutheran hymnal. Like the other hymns, the first verse is in Swedish while the other traditional verses are also public domain.

As the song builds, the suspensions, tensions - and resolutions - increase. The piano part is written with a simple, stride-like and slightly improvised feel. As such, feel free to completely ignore the written part and just follow the chords written above the piano grand staff. There is also accompaniment written for violin, viola, cello and bass, but it's optional. If you don't have a string orchestra handy, you can just accompany the choir with piano. There are sections where the choir sings a cappella. The piano can drop out there, but there is one section of the song where the strings and choir play together without the piano. Composer Alfredo Catalani originally created the aria as Chanson Groënlandaise in 1878 and later incorporated it into his opera. The aria was also featured in the French thriller Diva (1981). It has been arranged for 4-part SATB ensemble to be performed a cappella. This arrangement of an operatic masterpiece was created to make ‘Opera’ accessible to wider audiences for various reasons (instructive, educational purposes; and performance familiarity to/for a larger population). The original melody and harmonies are used. It retains the original foreign language text. This arrangement is an excellent tool for introducing ‘Opera’ music in the classroom, and programming diversity in the concert hall. Performance time: 2:21+-

Christmas in Australia is the theme song from the animated, made-for-TV movie Blinky Bill’s White Christmas, a spin-off from the Blinky Bill children’s books (by Australian writer Dorothy Wall) and the Adventures of Blinky Bill TV series. The telemovie first aired on Australia’s Seven Network on Christmas Eve of 2005. In the movie the song was sung by Christine Anu, who also reprised it at Sydney’s 2007 Carols in the Domain. Weather-wise, Christmastime in Australia is very different from that in the Northern Hemisphere. Instead of cold, snow and spending time indoors, there’s lots of sunshine, lots of colour everywhere and lots to do in the great outdoors. This delightful song – Christmas in Australia – highlights the fact that, whilst these differences do exist, the true meaning of Christmas, the reasons for rejoicing, the coming together of friends and family, the excitement of children, the decorating, and the caring and sharing are the same the world over. For on this little world of ours, we’re all one family. So, come and join us as we sing, around the Christmas tree. Christmas in Australia deserves a place in the best of Australian Christmas songs. Unfortunately, it is not as widely known and performed as it should be; perhaps because the music has not been readily available. Hopefully these new arrangements for choirs and soloists may go some way towards redressing that situation. This arrangement is available in six versions – SATB, SSA and 2-Part for choirs; Low, medium and high voice for soloists/unison choirs.

Then, some melodies came to my mind, and I wrote them down over a small piece of card board available by my bed. Since I can't sleep anymore, I get up rather early to use my computer to have composed this song and made a MTV, which has no lyrics.  I hope that someone could do the good job for that song. Feature a soprano soloist or the section on an ethereal descant that elevates the texture to sublime heights.This piece came about for two different reasons. The initial musical idea evolved while I was working on a short study for piano, so the piece was strictly instrumental.The other idea stemmed from a discussion with my friend and mentor Dr Phillip Cooke, about why the word “Alleluia is so commonly used in choral music. Apart from the obvious reasons – “Alleluia being a significant word in the sacred music tradition, and so on – we discussed the multiple possibilities a composer has with a word like that, in the sense that different syllables can be stressed, such as alleluia, alleluia or alleluia.This was something I used as the other structural building block in the composition, and I added “Alleluia as the only word, but with the emphasis moving to different syllables throughout the piece. For me, the setting of a single word like “Alleluia is far from any texts I usually set. The word, however, has a strong anchorage in musical tradition and composers have always set this word in all kinds of different ways.In this composition, I am interested in the word itself, the build-up of the word, the structure of the music, and adding something to the musical tradition of setting this famous word to music.This piece was premiered by the University of Aberdeen Chapel Choir at King’s College Chapel in Aberdeen, Scotland. The performance was conducted by their Director of Chapel and Ceremonial Music, Stuart Muir. – Henrik Dahlgren.

The initial fugal theme was inspired by the melody from the third movement of Beethoven's Quartet in A Minor, Op. 132, also known as Heiliger Dankgesang. My theme resembles Beethoven's melody in two ways: it aurally approximates the rhythms of his theme and it also takes the contour of Beethoven's melody and inverts it, also in an approximated way. This is where the similarities to Beethoven's theme end, forAnim Zemiros is most certainly not composed in the Lydian mode! Rather, it is composed in a chromatically saturated musical language. Although Anim Zemiros may be used for the Jewish Musaf Sabbath Service, it was conceived as a concert piece. In the synagogue, this hymn is sung responsively by the cantor and congregation. The responsive nature of this hymn is what inspired the use of contrapuntal passages alternating with homophonic ones. Anim Zemiros begins with a statement of the initial fugal theme in the basses followed by a response at the interval of a fifth in the altos during which the basses present the counter theme. After a brief episode, the same thing happens in the tenor and soprano voices while the basses and altos present new contrapuntal melodies. A brief, contrasting, calm homophonic chorale passage ensues (a textural foreshadowing of both the loud climax and the hushed closing of the piece). This is followed by an extended development section (like ones from sonata-allegro movements) in which ideas from both the contrapuntal and homophonic sections are fragmented and stratified. Shifting time signatures provide added momentum to this music that leads to the homophonic climax that follows. Next comes an “anti-fugue” in which the initial fugal theme is presented backwards, as is the fugal form itself, moving from four voices, to three and finally to two. However, rather than moving to one voice as at the opening of the piece (which would have been a very predictable thing to do), the piece ends with a reminiscence of the calm homophonic chorale. Ashkenazic pronunciation was chosen over Sephardic for two reasons. I wished to have the s sound on the Hebrew letter sov rather than the t sound. In addition, Ashkenazic pronunciation is considered to be somewhat archaic since Sephardic is used in modern Hebrew. I felt this gave me artistic license to compose vocal lines containing correct or incorrect syllabic stress for purely musical effect. As a lyricist, one of Karen’s favorite things is to set useful scripture texts that, for various and mostly unknown reasons, have been mostly neglected in the vocal music world. Here, we set the Luke 6:37-42, 46-49 passages (Judge not…, etc.) as a jazzy, syncopated SATB arrangement. Our test choirs have loved the addictive melody, and found the rhythms and harmonies to be mildly challenging, but worth the practice time. Plus, the piano really shines as a truly collaborative voice, rather than mere accompaniment, even including a section in the coda where the vocals sing back-up to a lively piano solo. This is truly a unique piece in the contemporary sacred choral repertoire and we highly recommend it for most church choirs.
