Published by Tyler Merideth (A0.782537). In the summer of 2004 I participated as a choir member in the International Church Music Festival in Coventry, England. It was the first time that I traveled outside of the United States and also the first time I had a chance to collaborate with musicians from all over the world. The experience made quite an impression on me. One day after rehearsal, I purchased 12 different postcards from the gift shop and got onto the choir tour bus. While I studied my newly purchased mementos, I realized that I was hearing music when I looked at a specific card. I quickly sketched a compositional concept on a scrap piece of paper for Agnus Dei. The postcard featured a sculpture of Christ’s countenance made from the remains of a fatal car wreck. I sought out other latin prayers outside of the Mass Setting to align with the other postcards. Once those were selected, short bursts of creativity and productivity over sixteen years brought us to today: July 5, 2020. The day I completed setting all twelve texts in twelve different keys.I would love to hear how you used this music either in a concert or worship setting. Arise is the short opening of this suite of five pieces, and is set to glorious homophonic music with rising motives in the lower voices.2. What's Cookin'? takes its sweet time tantalizing the listener with all the menu items of a truly Southern feast. Music, set to a slow tempo in swing eighths, makes the recitation tempting, if not downright sultry.3. Bugs is a soundscape of insects and their songs. We’re then introduced to (Mike Rowchip) ‘Chipper’ the ‘Waste Disposal module on his daily round and always tends to spend a little more time than is necessary in the mailroom. The story developes with the computer going 'offline' for temporary repairs, allowing Ariel to take advantage of this free time by coersing Chipper to take her on a tour of the circuit board with dire consequences when a computer virus 'Medussa' breaks into the C.P.U. It was performed at the Angevin Court in Naples around this time. The story is a dramatization of a traditional genre of medieval French song, the pastourelle. This genre typically tells of an encounter between a knight and a shepherdess, frequently named Marion. Adam de la Halle's version of the story places a greater emphasis on the activities of Marion, her lover Robin and their friends after she resists the knight's advances.
