Two Views of Scott Joplin

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.972650 Composed by James S…

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.972650 Composed by James Siddons. Contemporary,Opera,Ragtime. Octavo. 79 pages. James Siddons Music and Writings #4898807. Published by James Siddons Music and Writings (A0.972650). Two Views of Scott Joplin is an exploration of a personal and artistic crisis that Scott Joplin, the King of Ragtime, went through between 1904 and 1906. This crisis was precipitated by the untimely death of Freddie Alexander in September 1904, to whom Joplin had been married only ten weeks. Knowledge of this marriage was lost to history for almost a century until the Joplin scholar Edward A. Berlin discovered the newspaper obituary, which is quoted in the bass solo in Part II, The Obituary of Freddie Alexander. Apparently, Scott Joplin, already inspired by the progressive ideals of Booker T. Washington, saw a path to social and artistic betterment through his love of Freddie, a daughter of a refined family. During this period, Joplin used the title rag less often in his piano-solo works, and nurtured an interest in opera (he had long been active in vaudeville as well as ragtime piano). He seems to have lost his sense of direction in 1905 and 1906, until led by his publisher John Stark to move to New York City in 1907. Once there, apparently growing out of his grief, Joplin studied with an Italian opera singer and composer, composed his folk opera Treemonisha, and composed Wall Street Rag and his other late masterpieces for piano. Joplin died in April 1917 following two years of debilitating illness. Joplin left almost no personal writings, such as letters or diaries. To create an impression of autobiography, Two Views of Scott Joplin consists mostly of words and music written by Scott Joplin, and piano music composed by two close associates, the composer-pianists Louis Chauvin and Scott Hayden. These words come from Treemonisha, from Joplin’s little-remembered vaudeville and parlor songs, and also from text in his sheet-music---copyright notices, publishers’ addresses, titles and subtitles of rags, performance directions. In most cases, selected lyrics are extracted from songs and paired with piano-solo themes. These ingredients are combined in creative ways to express the biographical narrative. Instrumental themes are re-cast as necessary to express their newly-attached lyrics. But in no place can any of the music in Two Views of Scott Joplin be considered an arrangement of a given, intact composition, nor a medley of tunes, nor a theatrical revue. The character development and dialogue found in Scott Joplin’s Struggle with Destiny (Part II, No. 3) is my own biographical interpretation of Joplin, based on known evidence and on his music. The score contains extensive Performance Notes for performing this 16-minute work as a choral work or as a short opera scene.

Missa Solemnis, op. 27 (vocal score)

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1277132 Composed by Adrian Gagiu. 21st Century,Christian,Classical,Latin. Octavo. 128 pages. Adrian Gagiu #868444. Published by Adrian Gagiu (A0.1277132). Missa Solemnis in B major, op. 27, vocal score and piano part (for rehearsal purposes only). Based on its Neo-classical style, this setting of the Roman Catholic mass text could possibly work as a festive mass (missa solemnis) with trumpets and timpani, and its duration would fit such a solemn service. However, its intense and sometimes dramatic treatment and universal addressability due to its well-known and rather concentrated text, yet also due to eliminating the „Filioque†(which would still fit the rhythm of the repeated „qui ex Patreâ€, should any Catholics ever wish to perform this as a mass) make it rather a „liturgical oratorio for all nationsâ€, more appropriate in the concert hall. The work has had a long gestation: imagined in 1984 after the composer’s first contact with Beethoven’s masterpiece, then sketched first in 1987-1989, and many of its themes date back from those years. Its working out is quite polyphonic, discretely modal and cyclical, and also full of centuries-old musical symbols traditionally associated with the setting of the mass text: e.g. unisons for the more dogmatical parts, Baroque dotted rhythms at the Nativity (the first coming of the  King of Kings), „rex caelestis†and also at his Passion (whose setting is discretely inspired by folkloric Romanian laments), the „anabasis†gesture at „Gloria in excelsis Deoâ€, „et ascendit in caelisâ€, „in remissionem peccatorum†and the resurrection, a flute trill standing for the Holy Spirit who has come ’like a dove’ at „et incarnatus estâ€, a cross-shaped texture at „crucifixusâ€, and some word-painting (hushed sonorities at „et invisibiliumâ€, anticipations between orchestra and chorus at „et exspecto†etc.). Moreover, certain symbolic roles are assigned to the instrumental groups when alone (the organ represents God the Father and transcendence, the winds and/or solo voices represent God the Son and humanity, and the strings represent the Holy Spirit). „Kyrie†is restrained and soft, besides the powerful chords opening the respective sections of its tripartite, simple structure, and it leans towards Palestrina’s serene modality and counterpoint. „Gloria†begins with a colorful orchestral introduction depicting discretely the shepherds who kept watch over their flocks right before the Nativity, and then gradually the bright revelation. „Credo†has an orchestral introduction as well, but powerful, recurring and based on the beginning of the plainchant hymn „Pange linguaâ€, made famous by Mozart’s last symphony and by other Classical composers. Both „Gloria†and „Credo†end with extended, powerful and elaborate fugues („in gloria Dei Patris†and „et vitam venturi saeculiâ€, respectively) with dramatic modulations and sometimes with enthusiastic syncopations at odds with the words’ accents, a la Stravinsky. The same sections plus „Agnus Dei†end with soft quartal harmonies suggesting transcendent appeasement (similar harmonies appear powerfully at the beginning of „Sanctusâ€). „Judicare†quotes the beginning of the well-known „Dies irae†plainchant tune, and the Consecration between the „Sanctus†and „Benedictus†sections is represented by a contemplative prelude for solo organ, quoting Lutheran chorales, too. Another long orchestral introduction, suggesting the Last Judgment and based on traditional Byzantine hymns, opens „Agnus Deiâ€, which includes another quotation (the famous ’Dresden Amen’ at „qui tollis peccata mundi†and „dona nobis pacemâ€). In the final section, with its refined simplicity, the choral voices enter in descending order, and the „Kyrie eleison†theme is briefly remembered, then it ends softly and peacefully. Total duration: 50 min. Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN. The mp3 audio clip is Kyrie.

Choral Choir,Choral,SATB Chorus - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1451464 Composed by Traditional Irish folk tune/poem by Thomas Moore. Arranged by Scott S. Stewart. 19th Century,Celtic,Folk,Irish,Romantic Period,Singer/Songwriter. 6 pages. Scott S. Stewart #1030846. Published by Scott S. Stewart (A0.1451464). “At the Mid Hour of Night” comes from The Irish Melodies, National Airs, Sacred Songs, Etc., of Thomas Moore, published between 1807 and 1834. Moore, himself a singer and accomplished musician, is now best remembered for the lyrics of “The Minstrel Boy” and “The Last Rose of Summer.” His poem “At the Mid Hour of Night” is about love, loss and belief in the afterlife as a place where love persists. The suggested ‘tune’ for this poem is the harp air: O! Molly Dear AKA Molly My Dear an Irish air and fiddle tune. This 2024 setting of Moore’s masterpiece is scored for 4-part SATB ensemble to be performed a cappella. Performance time: 2:55+.

Choral Choir,Choral,SATB Chorus - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1439047 Composed by Todd Marchand. Christian,Sacred. 5 pages. Con Spirito Music #1019076. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1439047). “Let All the World in Ev’ry Corner Sing” is a short poem from the collection, The Temple, by Anglican priest, poet, and orator George Herbert (1593-1633). A contemporary of William Shakespeare and John Milton, God-child to poet John Donne, Herbert is associated with the 17th-century Metaphysical poets and “is remembered as a pivotal figure: enormously popular, deeply and broadly influential, and arguably the most skillful and important British devotional lyricist of his or any other time.” Shortly before his death in 1633 at age 39, Herbert directed that a manuscript of his religious poems be sent to his fellow clergyman and friend, Nicholas Ferrar, reportedly saying, “Tell him ... if he can think it may turn to the advantage of any dejected poor Soul, let it be made publick: if not, let him burn it: for I and it, are less than the least of God’s mercies.” First published in 1633, The Temple was an enormously popular work, totaling more than 20,000 copies printed in 13 editions between 1633 and 1679.“Let All the World in Ev'ry Corner Sing” is the refrain of Herbert’s poem, “Antiphon (I),” which appeared in the “Christian Life” section of The Temple. An antiphon may be defined as a short sentence or refrain sung or recited before or after a psalm or canticle; and in Herbert's short poem of two stanzas, he may also have intended that the verses be recited antiphonally (alternately) by two groups. The third stanza in this setting for SATB voices and organ, a doxology by an unknown author, was added in the 19th century. ©Copyright 2024 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). SATB choir divisi, Continuo - Digital Download SKU: LX.HCMC107 Composed by Giacomo Carissimi. Edited by Fiora Contino. Major Work. 48 pages. Roger Dean Publishing #eHCMC107. Published by Roger Dean Publishing (LX.HCMC107). UPC: 000308012118.Although recent publications indicate that his most creative contribution to musical forms of the middle baroque may have been in the development of the Italian chamber cantata, Giacomo Carissimi (1605-1674) is best remembered for his 16 extant oratorios, with Jephte generally accepted as his masterpiece. In many ways, Carissimi's oratorios are an enlargement of techniques which he set forth in his cantatas. Both forms stem from the passion for dramatization which was sweeping Italy at the time of opera, and it is this dramatic quality, sustained on several levels, that this edition attempts to delineate. A realized continuo is provided with possible additional instrumentation suggested. Likewise, vocal ornamentation is indicated, although the performer is free to embellish at will. A literal English translation of the Latin text has also been provided.

Peggy Carter #6009529. Published by Peggy Carter (A0.945426). This collage of 18th and 19th century tunes and words might have been sung at an old time Camp Meeting which was a community gathering popular in the late 18th century and early 19th century, at which time people would come from far and near to spend the day and night singing the old Gospel songs and listen to all day preachin' and dinner-on-the-grounds. The generally-accepted idea was, Come Hungry, Come Thirsty and feed at the fountain of life that never ran dry.Appropriate for volunteer church choirs, especially Sr. Adults who love remembering the old hymns. Kevin G. Pace #707994. Published by Kevin G. Pace (A0.1104757). Beautiful, sacred music for SATB choir. Music composed by Kevin G. Pace. Text by Mark R. Fotheringham. Text: Calvary is far away On a little hill, Where the Son was crucified To fulfill God's will. Rock and stone washed clean with time No longer bear the stain Of blood our Savior shed for man, By whom the Lord was slain. Nature wept to hide the deed. Wind would scour His pain, To leave behind a promise true That we shall live again. Far too is Gethsemane, Hidden 'midst the trees, Where he suffered for our sins, Fallen on His knees. There he drank the bitter cup, With none His pain to ease. The forest silent to HIs groans Dispersed upon the breeze. Ev'ry bough in reverence bent To His grief unseen, In honor of His sacrifice, That man could now be clean. Christ is not so far away, Nor His loving care. All creation sings His praise, Knowing He is there. See Him in each blooming flower, In rivers streaming by. Then feel Him in each mighty gale, Each snowflake in the sky. Glory Lord is thine alone. Earth still sings Thy fame, 'Til all shall bow before Thy throne, Remembering Thy name.

Published by WheatMyer Music (A0.976710). It Is Not Death to Die is a new setting of French poet Henri Abraham César Malan's Non, ce n'est pas mourir as translated by George Washington Bethune and adapted for this work. Why this text? It first came to my notice shortly after the passing of Billy Graham, who was known to paraphrase D. L. Moody, Someday you will read or hear that Billy Graham is dead. Don’t you believe a word of it. I shall be more alive than I am now. I will just have changed my address. I will have gone into the presence of God.Graham's bold proclamation and Malan's poetry motivated me to focus anew on the resurrection, re-remembering it as the pivotal element of the Christian faith. For if there is no resurrection, Paul says in 1 Cor 15, our faith is useless. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead! Unfortunately, singing about heaven has, perhaps, been neglected of recent decades. We seem to have focused more on the already to the detriment of the not yet. But it is important to remember that this life is not all there is! Quoting Paul again, the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us (Rom 8:18). Yet, if Christ delays, the grim inevitability of our transition into eternity is a certain experience we all face. Malan's poetry so poignantly and eloquently captures this tension that it compelled me to compose a fresh musical setting that attempts to captures the mixture of dread and hope borne out in the acclamation that death is swallowed up in victory! I pray that this setting aids the Church to remember the great hope and promise Christ has granted us: O Death, where is your victory? O Death, where is your sting?_______________________________________________________________________________________________The music opens with a C# diminished chord in a very still and somber texture reflective of grief. The text is introduced with the first of two main motives, a rising 4-note outline of B minor in a triple repetition of It Is Not Death. As each stanza proceeds the music concludes on the second motive, a 5-note descending span of a minor 7th in Bb Lydian. The energy and mood of the music gradually shift over the five stanzas, as the focus moves from this life to the next; the texture thickens, the harmony expands, and the dynamic grows into the music’s pinnacle on reign with You on high! The music closes on a reprise of the opening section, simultaneously mindful of our mortality and our eternity.

SATB choir, string orchestra - Intermediate SKU: LO.55-1068S A Service of Tenebrae. Composed by Douglas E. Wagner. Choral, cantatas. Holy Week, Sacred. Choral score. Duration 20-25 minutes. Sacred Music Press #55/1068S. Published by Sacred Music Press (LO.55-1068S). UPC: 000308060669.Remembering the events of Jesus' last hours leading up to his crucifixion and death is one of the extraordinary opportunities Christians have during Holy Week. This service of worship dramatizes the events and recaptures those solemn and sacred moments. The Canonical Hours of Matins and Lauds, recited and sung on the evenings of the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday before Easter Sunday, is called the 'Tenebrae,' which means 'darkness' or 'shadows.' It is named for the practice of extinguishingall but one of the prepared candles in the worship space during the course of the service. Mr. Wagner's service of Tenebrae focuses on seven episodes in the Passion and Death of Our Lord, and his choral music, all original, is passionate, dynamic and devotional. In addition, he has arranged his choral accompaniment for either keyboard or string ensemble. Congregational responsive readings and scriptural references also become a part of this exceptional observance. Performance time: 20-25 min.
