Dr. Milton H. Riemer. Dr. Riemer’s words bring insight and reflection to the poignant narrative of a parent-child relationship. Outside in a raging storm, King Lear angrily punishes himself for foolishly excluding his favorite daughter, Cordelia, from a portion of his kingdom. As mental illness takes hold, he suffers from curious confusion but understands his failings and begs Cordelia’s forgiveness. The Scottish air Etrick Banks provides melodic material that yields a royal fanfare, lament, thunderstorm, dementia, regret, and reconciliation. Crunchy chords and unsettling dissonances punctuate the sounds of modal chants and medieval polyphony.

Here, it has been arranged for double reed choir (2 oboes, English horn, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon). The arrangement contains minimal edits to the original score allowing for the performers to interpret the work as they choose.The opening solo is performed is the rich low register of the English horn followed by solo bassoon. Just as in the original work, the main theme is continuous, and the theme is passed around the ensemble to every part. The work concludes with a short and sweet duet between the contrabassoon and 1st oboe.This arrangement is an excellent way to close out a university double reed studio recital or Double Reed Day. The dynamic indications are not exaggerated: diminuendos at the ends of phrases should be taken to nothing. If singers run out of breath while holding one of these notes they should not rearticulate the pitch. The bassoon - which you may take as the voice of wisdom - must never be covered by the voices.The anthem is suitable for any memorial service or as special service music.Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the skyand those who lead many to righteousnesslike the stars forever and ever- Daniel 12:3 The cover image, taken by the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer, shows a cosmic rosebud blossoming with new stars. Schubert wrote Winterreise in 1827, about a year before his death.The texts are poems by Wilhelm Müller who died in the year that Schubert wrote Winterreise.Schubert found the first twelve poems under the title Wanderlieder von Wilhelm Müller. Die Winterreise in 12 Liedern in an almanack (Urania. Taschenbuch auf das Jahr 1823) published in Leipzig in 1823. It was after he set these, in February 1827, that he discovered the full series of poems in Müller's book of 1824, Poems from the posthumous papers of a travelling horn-player, dedicated to the composer Carl Maria von Weber, as a pledge of his friendship and admiration. Weber died in 1826. On 4 March 1827, Schubert invited a group of friends to his lodgings intending to sing the first group of songs, but he was out when they arrived, and the event was postponed until later in the year, when the full performance was given.This arrangement is made for SATB and can be sung with the original accompaniment by Schubert but there is also a set of parts for Wind-instruments. After a retirement due to health concerns, his second Christmas hymn dating from about 1849 was published in The Christian Register. Of it a fellow minister by the name of Morrison wrote, I always feel that, however poor my Christmas sermon may be, the reading and singing of It Came Upon the Midnight Clear are enough to make up for all deficiencies.”Here the tune is NOEL (CMD). The arrangement begins in Eb moving up to F, followed by an expressive (optionally a cappella) section in Dm. After a brief return to F for the final stanza (with a descant limited to top space F) there is a subtle surprise by joy to Em and on to a singable ending in G, with options for second soprano. The voicing range from unison to 2-part and on to 3 and 4 parts, but in a singable, approachable range for choirs of medium ability and only a hint of easily sung divisi.The accompaniment is active but playable and the score suggests a harpsichord voice as the keyboard option.
