A cappella SATB choir/quartet; ca. 9 min.The composer writes: A few years before I composed these settings by three American poets, I composed my Four Elizabethan Songs About Love (2016-2018). The texts I’ve used in Three American Poems About Love (2020) bring us forward in time about three centuries, and transpose the location from England to the USA. However, like the poems in the Elizabethan set, the texts in my American set are not all conventional love songs. The first, “Invitation to Love†(by Paul Laurence Dunbar) is a glowing reflection on the nature of love itself, rather than an expression of love directed towards a specific other. The second, “Spring Night†(by Sara Teasdale) is a wistful reflection on lovelessness, despite the consolations of beauty. Only the third, “Our Love†(by James Russell Lowell) is a love song in the conventional sense: a profession of enduring love between two people.

Just and true are your ways, King of the ages. AND GOD SINGS! Zephaniah 3:17: The LORD your God is with you, He is mighty to save. Published by TALLULAH TUNES (A0.933412). 2016 Choral Contest Entry - In late 2014, Dan Korneychuk, music director at the Bel Air Presbyterian church in Los Angeles, asked me to score one of his favorite poems which was written by Samuel Grossman in 1664. It had been put to music unsuccessfully, some felt, several times in the past. I decided to write a ‘hymn version’ first, much as it would appear in a traditional hymnal. Unfortunately, the text traversed the extremes of emotion in the telling of Christ’s passion rendering the melody inappropriate in places. I decided to keep to the hymn version as much as possible, but when the emotional story differed from the musical one, I used harmonic variation and dissonance, utilizing the wide palette of the orchestra to tell the story. This piece has been performed on Palm Sunday. Versions exist in the form of a hymn, an arrangement for 10 brass and 2 percussion, an arrangement for SATB/piano, An arrangement for SATB/organ, and an arrangement for orchestra.Questions or comments? DedicationSometime in the 1980's, Richard Tober, a brother in Christ who was also an appliance repair man, came to our house on Hill Street in Coloma, Michigan to fix our kitchen range. He knew that I was a composer, and during the course of his time with us that day he told about his love for Jesus and his aspiration to write poetry with music to express that love. He didn't feel he was equipped to put music to his words, but he did have a poem that he gave me, wondering if I would set it to music for him. It was a difficult task because Richard's poetry was not set up in any formal poetic fashion; it was, however, a fulfilling task because his poem was such a simple, childlike, personal expression of his love for the Lord. I Am Going Home to Glory is the result of our collaboration. He was thrilled with the outcome. Now that Richard has left this world to be with Jesus, I am happy that God allowed and enabled me to set Richard's poem to music. -Richard Barber

Three days of love, peace and music August 15-18 (actually lasted 3 and 1/2 days) on Max Yasgur's farm in New York.There is a plan to have a celebration to mark the occasion. To commemorate this occasion, this is the first of many arrangements of the iconic songs of the festival that I plan to write. Whenever possible I will use the actually Woodstock recordings as the arrangement. This beautiful song by John Sebastian is the first song on the Woodstock Soundtrack triple album. John was the 4th performer on the second day. This is the third song in his set (according to Wikipedia). This arrangement is in 4-part harmony throughout. It is a simple song that epitomizes the folk music of the time as well as the festival itself. Duration = 2:35. Of the four, only Christopher Marlowe’s seductive “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love†and Shakespeare’s wise and insightful Sonnet 116 address requited love. On the other hand, John Donne’s “The Message†is a “hate-songâ€, an angry poem about love gone wrong, bursting with bitter recriminations. And Elizabeth I’s “When I Was Fair and Young,†is wistful and full of regret: the Queen realizes that her own youthful pride has obstructed her opportunities for happiness. The melody and emotion has stuck with me since. When approaching my own arrangement, I hoped to honor the voice of the original writers and their experience of slavery, and I also sought to extend a voice to people today who are suffering from oppression and discrimination. I hoped an appropriate way to honor the experience of the original writers might be to invite the contemporary listener to envision and commit to a better, more just world today—a world of inclusion, radical kindness, compassion, love, and grace—a world where we have the courage to champion the inherent dignity and value of all people, a world where we will be done with all the ways we deny a person’s worth. A world where “heaven has come to earth.†In this arrangement, spoken word is incorporated throughout, intended to heighten the intensity of the performance, and meant to give a sense of immediacy to the challenge for the choir and audience to work together for justice, equity, and wholeness. Spoken word has often been used as the language of protest—and I include it intentionally as a way of giving voice to the choir members (and listener)—where all can stand in solidarity against oppression and injustice. If desired, choir members are encouraged to write their own spoken word text that speaks to issues of inequity and injustice in their own communities. I am writing this program note not long after George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis, MN, on May 25, 2020. As a Minneapolis area resident for the past 25 years, I want to take a more active role in working towards justice in my community. All proceeds received from the sale and performance of Soon We Will Be Done will be directed to ISAIAH—a multi-racial, state-wide, nonpartisan coalition of faith communities fighting for racial and economic justice in Minnesota. While not very religious, I've always loved Jewish music. To that end, I sought out to write something that wasn't an arrangement of an already existing tune but wasn't also a more obscure prayer that only the more religious people would know, both of which I've done before. In addition, I wanted to write something oriented more toward a concert rather than a religious setting.Oseh Shalom comes from the last part of the Mourner's Kaddish, a longer prayer recited in memory of the dead. It is not only said in sadness, however. Many settings of the prayer, including Debbie Friedman's and Nurit Hirsh's, which are the settings I grew up singing, are very festive. I've been recording improvised a cappella arrangements of songs since high school as a hobby, originally dubbing them as demos to entice friends from my high school's choir to join and record the full parts. I originally recorded Radio/Video in 2012, years after high school, having the crazy idea of trying to arrange a metal song, without being able to scream. I did a decent job and uploaded it to YouTube and forgot about it for years (intense university and startup years). During one of the Covid lockdowns, I was browsing an a cappella Facebook group and came across Noa Gruman's YouTube video doc on choirs during Covid (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86IHL4FWUu8), and through it, I discovered the Hellscore choir (https://www.youtube.com/hellscoreacappella), an Israeli metal a cappella group. After starting a new job, I've decided to support various creators I've been following, including Noa - and discovered the option to have monthly sessions with her by supporting her through Patreon. After discussing some vocal techniques, I asked Noa if she would be willing to listen to and comment on my old metal arrangement, to which she agreed. Rather than just doing that, I rerecorded a new version of the arrangement, with new ideas and taking advantage of some improved vocal techniques. Noa gave me a very useful critique but suggested that it would be more efficient to also put the arrangement down in musical notation. And so, for the first time in my life, I sat down to actually write a musical arrangement. This piece is the result of this months-long process, which is itself born of a decade old project of mine. I would be excited to have you perform this arrangement with a full choir—I would love to hear the result! I will be re-recording it myself in the near future. I sincerely hope you'll enjoy this piece.

The chorus that repeats throughout the song presents an irony of winter warming the soul. I found this to be both interesting and also meaningful in that I was describing my new viewpoint of winter snow (seeing more beauty in it than before) and presenting a metaphor for life-one that encourages the listener to see the beauty in something that most northerners despise.The first verse begins with sensory perceptions including seeing, hearing, touching, and smelling various natural qualities of winter. The second verse describes the joy of children playing in the snow and their belief in winter stories. The third verse is directed at worrying adults with a message of hope for the future.
