It was recorded by Elton John and released in 1976, both as a single and as part of the Blue Moves album. It was John's second single released by The Rocket Record Company. The song is a mournful ballad about a romantic relationship which is falling apart.The song also appeared the following year on Greatest Hits Volume II, though for copyright reasons it no longer appears on the current version of that album. It now appears on Greatest Hits 1976–1986, The Very Best of Elton John and in Greatest Hits 1970–2002, as well as a number of other compilations.The song was covered in 2002 by English boy band Blue for their second studio album, One Love (2002). The song was recorded as a collaboration with Elton John, and was the second single from the album. It peaked at number one on the UK Singles Chart on 15 December 2002 and also reached number one in Hungary and the Netherlands. It peaked within the top 10 in an additional 16 countries.In 2004, Elton John and Ray Charles performed the song on Charles' duet album, Genius Loves Company. It would turn out to be the last recording Charles ever did before his death that June. The duet was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. It was also performed by smooth jazz saxophonist Kenny G on the soprano saxophone featuring Richard Marx on his 2004 album At Last...The Duets Album later that year.The song was a Top 20 hit, reaching No. 11 in the United Kingdom, No. 6 in the United States and No. 3 in Canada. In addition, the song went to No. 1 on the US and Canadian Adult Contemporary charts. In the US, it was certified Gold on 25 January 1977 by the RIAA.The single was the lead single for the eight-track remix compilation Good Morning to the Night in collaboration with Australian remixer Pnau, which came out on 16 July 2012.

An Avaloch Divertimento was begun-in fact the first two movements were completed-at the Avaloch Farm Music Institute in New Hampshire. Avaloch or Abhlach, is from the old Irish word meaning, place of the apple trees. The sacred Isle of the Apple Trees, Avalon-where Arthur, King of the Britons, was taken to be healed of his dreadful wounds-takes its name from this ancient word. Avaloch Farm Music Institute (AFMI) in New Hampshire is also a magical place where chamber music groups come to work and create in an atmosphere free from the distractions of everyday life. In the summer of 2021 I had the pleasure and honor of being a resident of AFMI along with Areli Mendoza-Pannone, Robert Frazier, and Mark Evans as we work-shopped my song cycle, Quarry Songs. Areli, Bobby, and Mark had to go back to the real world half way through the residency, leaving me at AFMI to begin work on An Avaloch Divertimento. The first movement is an Aubade, which are traditionally morning love songs-as opposed to evening love songs or serenades. In the seventeenth century aubades became associated with instrumental works depicting sunrises. It is this sense of the word that is used here, complete with a bird-song oboe cadenza. Pippin takes its name from a variety of apple. While at AFMI I would take afternoon walks through the nearby apple orchard to beautiful Walker Pond. It was on one of these walks that I came up with the first draft of the tune used in the central fughetta of the movement. The word, pippin is also included in Carolyn Forché’s poem, The Museum of Stones, which I had set as the final movement of Quarry Songs. The final movement, Amhrán, means song in Irish and is a simple song form with three interwoven themes that emulate the Irish Bodhran (frame drum), fiddle, and singer. It is somewhat ironic that this composer of a wedding mainstay was himself a victim of unrequited love. He consequently shot himself in the cathedral graveyard. Felix Mendelssohn’s Wedding March was originally written in 1842 as incidental music to Shakespeare’s famousplay, Midsummer Night’s Dream. It is best known in the English-speaking world as Here Comes the Bride. Queen Victoria’s daughter used the music for her marriage in 1858, and its popularity has endured ever since. This version is arranged as a solo for Oboe and Piano.Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances, especially at weddings. The melody is mainly in the solo part. The performance time is a little more than one minute. The short sample here and the full length version on the youtube link are from the Clarinet version of this arrangement.Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with phrasing and expressive playing.
