Score and parts. 39 pages. Robert Fruehwald #2165237. Published by Robert Fruehwald (A0.923701). I have a love-hate relationship with the Cesar Franck D Minor Symphony. It was the first large scale romantic work that I played as a member of a youth orchestra. I remember the thrill of being immersed in the overwhelming drama of the work. As I have returned to the piece over the years, I still love it, or rather I love parts of it. It is a very, very long work. It takes a while to get to the point. The point of the piece, to me, is the last movement. It is fast, exciting, maybe even joyous. The long, dark, angst-ridden build-up seemed profound to me as a teenager. I am less patient today. Now I wish Franck had simply started with the last movement. I decided to try rewriting the symphony myself. I would start with material from the last movement. I would use all of the basic musical material of the piece, but I would condense it down to ten to fifteen minutes of music. I had originally intended to leave the romantic character of the work intact. That intention didn't last very long. As I worked on the piece, it very quickly became more post-modern than romantic. I think that's fine. The profundity may be gone, but I think the piece is more fun this way. As I get older the scales of my life are tipping more and more toward fun and less and less toward profundity. It's kind of nice that, as I age, I see more fun ahead me even if that means I'm seeing profundity recede in the rear-view mirror.

As it is such a popular hit I was surprised to find that the original was by Bob Dylan, from the album ‘Time out of Mind’ from 1997, and also that it has been covered many times by different artists.Why choose my arrangement?I have arranged the piano part to follow the original very closely, transposed into G Major, a great key for the oboe. It is the best I can do because I also want to be able to play it in gigs with my daughter who is a singer. As such I have made the piano part to lie under the fingers, making sure the clefs are easy to read.Some of the harmony is slightly changed, and I composed my own bridge passage with hints at the original. Also Adele sings a quite dissonant G in the melody, against the F sharps in some of the verses. Personally I love this, but it would need to be played subtly, and the clash is less obvious in the less dense sonority of a vocal part, so I have left this option open by notating the safer version, and suggesting the dissonance rather than the other way around. On the video is an example of both.I also include a bonus ‘Easy Oboe’ Part that younger players will enjoy, or perhaps pupils of those who buy the professional level arrangement. I have also enclosed a ‘piano only’ score as it falls onto three pages and is convenient for performing, as well as the two piano scores with each oboe version.Adele sings the original at 72 bpm but I think you could certainly go as high as 76 bpm without losing that mournful quality, and it will help young players with their breathing.My Youtube Channel has many arrangements for String Quartet, recorded by Capriccio Quartet, plus an arrangement of Downton Abbey for Oboe and Piano available from Sheet Music Plus. He changed the original orchestral instrumentation to soprano, strings, and continuo.  He also modified the voice-leading making it sound more like a Bach composition. The work appears as BWV 508 No. 25 in the Anna Magdalena Notebook No. 2.  Source Only a few remnants of the original opera have survived. Historians speculate that Anna Magdalena got the song from the Leipzig Opera after the bankruptcy of 1720. Chances are good, though, that the tune was a favorite of everyone in Leipzig at the time.  Lyrics When thou art near, I go with joyTo death and to my rest.O how joyous would my end be,If your fair hands      Would close my faithful eyes. - Unknown Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy are the St. John Passion, and indeed the Christmas Oratorio.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival        Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV.  Voyager NASA launched two Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Onboard are phonograph records with sounds, music, and images of life on Earth. The purpose of the launch was to inform intelligent extraterrestrial life forms about conditions on Earth. The music on the disc is varied. There is Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Stravinsky among others. However, because Bach is so important in our music history, it contains three times more Bach than all the others combined. Â

The writer, John Newton, led a dissolute life as a sailor in the slave trade for many years before marriage, along with a close encounter with death at sea, dramatically changed his perspective. He lived out his later years as a devout and charismatic clergyman in the English countryside, renowned for his direct and personal style. The words he wrote in Amazing Grace are an intimate retelling of his spiritual journey. The hymn was written in 1773, and was sung to many different melodies initially, but since the mid nineteenth century it has become most closely associated with the famous folk tune melody presented here, New Britain.This version is arranged as a solo for Oboe with Piano accompaniment. The melody is played four times, each verse in a different style. The is a freely adapted arrangement of the popular English folk song Scarborough Fair which was made famous by Simon and Garfunkel in the 1960s. The piano accompaniment is fairly straight-forward and the oboe part is printed in large easy-to-read notation. The oboe part remains in the low to medium register and would thus be ideal for elementary players. The lowest note is the D just below the treble staff and the top note is the G just above the staff. The duration is 02:50 and this lovely folk melody in the Dorian mode would make a really useful addition to the young oboist's repertoire. The oboe part and the piano accompaniment come in a single PDF file.

Zellev Music #868187. Published by Zellev Music (A0.1276462). The Three Romances for Oboe and Piano, Op. 94 (German: Drei Romanzen) is a composition by Robert Schumann, his only composition for oboe. It was composed in December 1849. The work consists of three short pieces in A-B-A form, and it was written during what was speculated to be one of Schumann's manic episodes.An average full performance lasts roughly 12 minutes.The Romances were written in December 1849, one of the most productive years of Schumann's entire career. Previously that year, Schumann had written two other works for wind instruments and piano: the Adagio and Allegro, op. 70, for French Horn and piano, and the Fantasy Pieces for Clarinet and Piano, op. 73. According to Schumann himself, the pieces were written on December 7, 11, and 12th in Dresden., Unlike many other oboes, works at the time, the pieces were not the result of a commission by a prominent soloist of the day. Schumann gave the pieces to his wife Clara Schumann, whom he once described as his own right hand, as a Christmas present, calling them his hundredth opusculum. Schumann's mental health was quickly deteriorating during the time of the pieces' writing; shortly afterward, he moved from Dresden to Düsseldorf, where he was admitted to and eventually died in an asylum.On November 2, 1850, the pieces were first performed privately as a piano and violin piece with Clara Schumann on piano and François Schubert on violin. The works were first performed several years after Schumann's death, in 1863; the performances took place on January 24 and February 14 in the Gewandhaus, featuring Emilius Lund on oboe and Carl Reinecke on piano.The piece was dedicated to Wilhelm Joseph von Wasielewski. The original edition was published by N. Simrock. The publication date is unknown, but it is estimated to have been anywhere from December 1850 to February 1851. Nikolaus Simrock wrote a letter to Schumann on November 19, 1850, asking whether or not Schumann would agree if we were to print on the title page: 'for oboe and pianoforte' and on this with a violin 'for violin and pianoforte' and on the third 'for clarinet and pianoforte,' since it is not looked upon with favor when several instruments appear on the title page. However, Schumann denied the request, replying, If I had originally written the work for violin or clarinet, it would have become a completely different piece. I regret not being able to comply with your wishes, but I can do no other. Two copies of the original printing exist Schumann's copy and Wasielewski's dedication copy (both either in museums or private collections).Disobeying Schumann's wishes, Simrock published alternate violin and oboe parts in the first edition. In her compilation of Robert's works post-mortem, Clara only included the violin transcription, possibly due to her only playing the piece with violinists. There have been several recordings of the music, including a recent one along with other Schumann oboe works by Oboe Classics. The romances are now a standard part of the oboe repertoire and often considered the best piece of romantic repertoire for the oboe.

Really??This is a great song and works really well as an instrumental solo for brass instruments. It comes from the 2018 remake of the film 'A Star is Born' and is sung originally by Lady Gaga.I was asked to do an arrangement of the song for a young lady to sing with Boobs & Brass. I was struck by the quality of the words and the music and immediately thought of it as a great addition to the solo repertoire.In terms of standard, I would judge this to be around Grades 5 to 6 ABRSM/Trinity and makes for an interesting challenge away from the grading syllabus.

It is a slow sentimental contemplative piece written with the intermediate player in mind- the oboe range is one and a half octaves with the lowest note F sharp. Full score is nine pages long, oboe 3 pages, Piano 6 and around six minutes in length. The youtube link has the full score for you to assess suitability. It would be particularly suitable for a concerts, small gatherings, family occasions, weddings, church services, incidental music etc.
