Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811132). Here is a description of the work IN MEMORIAM by composer Brian Pappal. In Memoriam: A Chorale After Bruckner was composed in memory of Murray Crewe, former Bass Trombonist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Murray was my private trombone teacher at Duquesne University where he maintained a large studio of private trombone students and directed the trombone choir. During my lessons with him and in trombone choir rehearsals, Murray was contagiously positive and encouraging with a sense of humor all his own. He was also an artist of immense depth and sensitivity who daily sought to create and encounter moments of beauty in the world. Some of my greatest musical memories of Murray are of his leading the trombone choir in playing transcriptions of Brucknerâ??s choral motets. There are obvious parallels between the voice and the trombone, and Murrayâ??s artistry combined with Brucknerâ??s profound compositions created a deeply moving experience for me as a young musician. I wrote this piece with those memories in my mind. The sonorities are intentionally vocal, and performance of the piece should be approached in a similarly sustained and expressive style. The first trombone part remains rather high without rest; it may be played by either a tenor or alto trombone depending on player preference.

A new set of 3 beautiful sounding Corelli Trio Sonatas for Trombone Trio transcribed by L.A. Philharmonic Principal Trombonist, Ralph Sauer. Opus 1, No. 2 in D major, Opus 1, No. 3 in G major, Opus 4, No. 1 in C major. Each trio of about 8 minutes in length is in a 4 movement structure of Slow- Fast-Slow-Fast. There are many great pure chorale harmonies, plus each 2nd movement has a contrapuntal style to it, which is great for building up keen ears and ensemble sense. These sonatas are of moderately advanced difficulty, in tenor and bass clefs. Endurance is not a problem because of the masterly editing of Mr. Sauer, who is legendary for his transcription skills. These trios can be performed by most College/University students and some keen high schoolers. Range goes from a pedal A for Bass Trombone to one high D for the 1st part, but most of the tessitura is in a normal range.

This easy arrangement for trombone trio has been adapted to be simple to perform and understand the structure of the original work for various levels of musical knowledge. It can be played freely by beginning students because of the ease imposed on the piece. It is often performed at wedding ceremonies slowly and reverently, challenging the effect suggested by Bach in his original score for voices with trumpet, oboes, strings, and continuous bass. This is one of Bach's most beautiful cantatas, made famous by the Jesus the Joy of Men chorus. It was originally composed for Advent 1716 in Weimar. Years later, already in Leipzig, Advent was tempus clausum, there was no music in the churches. Bach then reworked it for the Feast of Mary's Visitation. It is the final chorale of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Although it is the 32nd cantata composed by Bach, of those that have survived, it was given BWV 147 in the complete catalog of his works.

Prelude and Fughetta for Trombone Trio by Elizabeth Raum is an accessible work for advanced intermediate performers. The two sections are all in bass clef, plus technique, range and endurance are kept to a moderate level.Prelude is a beautiful lyrical chorale marked religioso that weaves its way through various tonal centers, but returns home to C major. Fughetta as it sounds is contrapuntal in nature flipping itself around after first being stated by each performer.Altogether the work is a delightful addition to the repertoire for lesser experienced players.
