One cannot often find the origin of a folk tune or a definitive form, and bewares of modern arrangements (including mine!) The REFRAIN is Kolomeike, кoлoмийкa, a very quick duple-time dance tune, with a variable scale, popular in Ukraine for weddings and other festive occasions, often led by a clarinet with soft reed and many smears. EPISODES are mostly sad love-songs: A. Чом ти не прийшов: a girl sings Why did you not come and meet me in the moonlight? Wouldn't your mother let you? Dorian mode. B. Slow Waltz: I have seen this with G major accompaniment, but I have used G mixolydian: a popular mode in Ukraine.The bass has the melody. C. O, in the cherry orchard Ой, у Вишневому Саду. A girl (Clarinet) sings that she begged her boyfriend to take her home from the orchard, as it was late, but he took a different girl. Mother knows what has been going on, but is sympathetic. G minor. D Tanietz: a very fast dance tune led by the Clarinet: I do not know its name. E a reprise of the Cherry Orchard. F.Ти ж мене підманула You tricked me and let me down. I have seen and heard this sung cheerfully and very fast, but its lyrics are really sad. A young man complains that his girlfriend never turns up for their dates. Players will choose a tempo. The basic melody was attributed to Semen Klimovski. Here, the Bass sings the melody. DURATION: 11 minutes. INSTRUMENTATION: Two Bb CLarinets, Bass Clarinet.

In 1853 Charles Czerny composed a set of 20 easy piano pieces which he called Amusement des Jeunes Amateurs (Amusement for Young Amateurs); they were subtitled Petites et Brillantes Recreations (Small and Brilliant Recreations). Let's just say they are easy fun little pieces! All of the pieces were loosely based on a folk song or a popular theme from a classical composer. One of them was based on a popular folk Russian polka, so he called it Polka Russe.I have taken Polka Russe and freely arranged it for Instrumental Trio, using some of Czerny's themes, re-arranging them into parts, and also re-ordering them into my own Rondo. Form is Intro-ABACADA-Coda. I have broken up his melodies and spread them across all three parts; each part is of equal importance and each part independently adds to the stunning melodic weaving. Parts are mostly scales and arpeggios. It requires careful counting and close attention to rhythmic interplay, but sounds quite advanced and dramatic when all details are observed. This piece is really quite Easy, I have just marked it Early Intermediate because of the Allegretto vivace tempo, the note range (two octaves), and the necessary counting. A fun piece to show your technique and musicianship as a group in any concert. 1:45 minutes, 8 pages score, 3 pages @ part(Temporary recording of piano reduction of parts)

All three parts are simple enough to be enjoyed by fairly new learners. Clarinet 3 avoids using any notes over the break and rhythms are kept simple in all parts. This could be a fun introduction to ensemble playing for three young players. It would also be a crowd-pleasing item in a Christmas concert or assembly. The transcription remains faithful to the structure, with only one change in tone, so that it is comfortable for all the instruments in the formation, as well as being used as an activity in ensemble practice among musicians of different traditions. Beethoven's Turkish March (Op. 113) is the 4th movement of the operatic work: The Ruins of Athens, a set of incidental pieces written in 1812 by Ludwig van Beethoven, where the melody was originally written in 1809 as Theme with Six Variations for Piano, Op. 76. The work was written to accompany the play of the same name by August von Kotzebue, for the dedication of a new theater in Pest. Perhaps the best known part of the composition is the Marcia alla turca, In Latin America, this movement became known in Jean-Jacques Perrey's version (who titled it The Elephant never Forgets) since it was used as the opening theme of the successful Mexican TV comedy El Chavo del Ocho. The opening and the turkish march are often performed separately, and the other pieces in this set are not often heard.

As much as it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion. Ludwig van Beethoven began concentrated work on his Symphony No. 7 in A major Op. 92 in 1811, it was completed in 1812, and was dedicated to Count Moritz von Fries, and premiered in Vienna on December 8, 1813. It is considered a remarkable example of the more ebullient side of Beethoven's compositional personality and evidence that even after the onset of deafness, he still found cause for musical optimism. The second movement Allegretto is a funeral march in everything but name. Often several contrasting melodic ideas are made to coexist, as if Beethoven were imagining several processions converging on the cemetery at the same time. As he was working on this symphony during the years of the Napoleonic Wars, this experience was probably within his experience. It was also used as the soundtrack to the film Knowing, by director Alex Proyas and starring Nicolas Cage, where it is used in the final scene of the film. Beethoven called Symphony No. 7 his most excellent symphony, and a music critic of the time reported, this symphony is the most melodically rich and the most pleasing and comprehensible of all Beethoven's symphonies..

This arrangement works equally well with 2 Bb and Bass or 3 Bb Clarinets. Theme with 3 variations and a closing section. Accompaniment patterns not idiomatic on clarinet have been re-voiced for ease of performance. With all repeats the work can be over 8 mins long. Difficulty for this piece is subjective based on tempo, and at a moderate andante the work would be challenging in some sections for younger players. This arrangement is perfect for background music, parties, and community events but is also appropriate for recitals and reading sessions with colleagues. A real treat to play with friends! All parts are nearly equal difficulty with the bass part having a lot of fun in the 2nd variation.
