The Sony Classical release debuted and then stayed for several months at the No.1 position on Billboard Magazineâ€™s Classical music chart. Oâ€™Connor originally composed the piece as a solo for unaccompanied violin in 1993. For the recording with Ma in 1996, Oâ€™Connor and Meyer re-arranged the waltz for violin, cello and doublebass. As it currently appears in this manuscript, Oâ€™Connor adapts the instrumentation for violin, viola and cello for improved playability. Appalachia Waltz might well be one of Mark Oâ€™Connorâ€™s most-loved compositions. The Viola II part consists mostly of the melody in the orchestra tutti sections, as well as harmonizing lines with the Viola I part. The Viola III part provides the bass line and includes melodic lines as well. By learning and playing all three parts, students become familiar with how the solo part relates to the orchestra. Students learn to listen more carefully to the orchestra lines, developing a better sense of ensemble. By playing all parts, students develop a more complete sense of the concerto.
