The Jester was a member of the household of a nobleman or a monarch employed to entertain guests during royal court. Jesters were also traveling performers who entertained common folk at fairs and town markets, and the discipline continues into the modern day, where jesters perform at historical-themed events.This piece is in ternary form. The outer sections are to represent the general clowning around and playing pranks as a mischievous Jester does. The middle section by contrast is more lyrical to demonstrate a softer side to the personality, however this quickly transcends back to the final section where jokes, pranks and laughs have their way!Â It should be performed very briskly and lightly to capture the overall feel of the piece. The range in total is two and a half octaves and it is 4.00 minutes in length- Set at Intermediate level. Aurora has different interpretations in many cultures throughout the world. The meaning and mythology surrounding Aurora gave rise to the individual movements. I. Goddess of Dawn – The music of this movement reflects a sunrise from its first hint of light to its full-blazed glory. II. Ravens - Spirit Guides – Many North American cultures believed that the Aurora Borealis represented spirits of departed ancestors. Ravens were often thought to be the conveyor of the spirit to the heavens. This movement is a scherzo and trio. The scherzo represents the dancing and playful spirits where the trio has an ethereal quality. III. Sister of the Sun and Moon - The Greeks held that Aurora was the sister of Helios and Seline, the sun and moon respectively, and that she raced across the early morning sky in her multi-colored chariot to alert her siblings to the dawning of a new day. This movement contains colorful harmony. The rising line represents dawn while the rapid musical motifs represent Aurora racing across the sky. IV. Celestial Battle Between Good and Evil - It is said that many of the early Chinese legends associated with dragons were a result of the Northern Lights. The belief is that the lights were viewed as a celestial battle between good and evil dragons that breathed fire across the firmament. Battle music dominates the first two-thirds of this movement before giving way to the triumph of good over evil.

Â It presents a musical narrative of their unpredictable journey through the skies, back to earth, and, eventually, into the stratosphere.Â The piece was commissioned by Music Teachers National Association for the 2022 National Conference. Â It is a trio for oboe, violin and piano written for students at the intermediate to advanced-intermediate level. Â Composed in three contiguous movements, it involves three characters â€“ the balloons (portrayed by the oboe and violin) and the wind (represented by the piano). Â In the opening movement (Floating), the balloons escape their moorings and ascend into free space, floating playfully among the clouds with the help of a gentle wind. But, as in life, journeys are not always peaceful. Â The second movement (Falling) opens with a hint that something is not quite right. Â Undaunted, the balloons continue their carefree ascent amid the ominous signs of an approaching storm. Â The wind ultimately asserts its authority, pummeling the balloons back to earth. Â As they lie helplessly on the ground, they assess each otherâ€™s condition and make feeble attempts to relaunch. Â But, without wind, their situation seems hopeless. Â In the final movement (Flying), hope is restored as a quiet breeze lifts the intrepid pair back into the air. Â They resume their skyward adventure with renewed vigor and joy â€“ dancing through the clouds and, ultimately, out of sight.Floating, Falling, Flying is an exciting and challenging piece appropriate for school concerts, recitals and Solo and Ensemble festivals. Â Brian Chung is a pianist, arranger, composer, conference speaker, former Senior Vice Present of Kawai America Corporation, and author or co-author of four books published by Alfred Music. Â He was honored to participate in MTNAâ€™s Collaborative Music Commissioning Project with this composition.
