The beloved hymn Nearer My God, to Thee by Lowell Mason is presented here as a flowing, peaceful instrumental duet (for BOWED PSALTERY solo with PIANO accompaniment). The PSALTERY part was designed for a beginning psaltery player and includes only 2 flats; B♠below middle C and B♠above middle C. The piano accompaniment is at the early-intermediate level. To assist those new to reading music notation, two solo parts are included: one is the standard music notation and includes the lyrics for sing along enjoyment. The second solo part is identical to the standard music but instead of lyrics, the note names are provided below each note (example A, B, C…). The PSALTERY plays the melody for the first verse and most of the second verse. There are a couple short phrases during the second verse where the PIANO plays the melody and the PSALTERY provides the harmony. The first verse is in the key of C major. For the second verse, the PIANO transitions up to the key of F major during a short interlude. A piano accompaniment and/or rehearsal track (MP3 format) is available for this arrangement as a separate purchase: Nearer My God, to Thee (Piano Accompaniment Track for Easy Bowed Psaltery Solo).The range of a typical soprano psaltery is two octaves beginning with the G above middle C (G4). However, since some psalteries have fewer than 25 strings, the range for this song is only 1-1/2 octaves. Also, the notes are written an octave lower on the staff so they are easier to read and learn for beginner musicians. The notated range for this song is G3 (first G below middle C) to D5 (second D above middle C).The purchase price includes a combined score (grand staff, 3-stave) with both parts (PSALTERY and PIANO) on each page, plus 2 options for the 1-staff solo part (one with lyrics, one with alphabetic note names). The lyrics are from a traditional hymn but I've written new music for it in a minor key to match the sombre mood. This recording is a perfect accompaniment track for either a beautiful solo during a church service or for a congregation to sing along with, led by a singer who has heard the recording and knows the song. The mp3 has no lead singer but harmonies and a few descants in the background, particularly in the end, as they are really part of the music and will help to make it a really moving, powerful song at any church service. This rare hymn is wonderful for Ash Wednesday or any time during the Lenten Season or even Good Friday, contemplating Christ's betrayal by Peter and all who give in to sin. Although it is very solemn and touches on many points about repentance and Christ's suffering, it ends on an uplifting note and leads us on to stronger faith in Him.This song has a vocal range of Bb3-C5 and there is also sheet music in several keys available by searching Stacey Plays Hymns on this site. Here is a flowing instrumental trio arrangement (for FLUTE and/or VIOLIN duet with PIANO accompaniment) of a beautiful hymn from the early 1900's titled My Song by D. S. Hakes. The original lyrics were inspired by the following Bible verse: The Lord is my strength and song. Psalm 118:14. This hymn may be better known by its Spanish title Mi Redentor es Cristo (O Jesus, my Redeemer) when used with lyrics translated by Edgar L. Maxwell. The original lyrics by F. E. Belden are shown below.Both the FLUTE and the VIOLIN get to lead with the melody at times making this a fun and equally challenging piece for both instruments while adding variety for the listeners. The FLUTE plays the melody for the first verse and then the two instruments alternate for the second verse. The VIOLIN leads with the melody for the third verse. The song begins in the key of C major for the first two verses, then transitions to the key of G major during the piano interlude before the final verse.Though notated with FLUTE on part 1 and VIOLIN on part 2, the ranges are also accessible for other combinations of C instruments such as 2 VIOLINS or 2 FLUTES. The range for each part is as follows: Part 1 (FLUTE) ~ G4 to B5; Part 2 (VIOLIN) ~ D4 to G5. For the violin on either part, all notes are playable in the first position making this piece an excellent choice for early intermediate string players.
