Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792066). Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor BWV 565 is possibly the most famous work in the organ repertoire. It was written as early as 1704 while the composer was in his teens, which could explain some of its unusual features. It first appeared in publication in 1833 by way of Felix Mendelssohn. The first appearance of this work as a transcription and recording for brass came in 1979 by Frederick Mills and the Canadian Brass, becoming an iconic work in the ensemble's repertoire. Ralph Sauer has had a great deal of success with his transcriptions of Bach's works. This work of about 9 minutes in length for 8-part Trombone Ensemble of advanced performers is brilliantly thought out and can be the cornerstone of a concert program.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792143). A great transcription of Bach's Dorian Toccata BWV 538 for Trombone Octet by Ralph Sauer, Principal Trombonist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Mr. Sauer's scoring for this work shows his great skill as a Bach Brass Expert. Instrumentation is for 6 Tenors (parts 1-5 in tenor clef, 6th in bass) and 2 Bass trombones. Range goes to a high D for the 1st part in the final bars. Otherwise, range is moderate with no heavy endurance problems. This piece bounces along at a good clip and shows off technique & precise ensemble. A great choice for advanced performers.

Widor wrote music for a wide variety of instruments and ensembles and composed four operas and a ballet, but only his works for organ are played with any regularity today. The organ symphonies are his most significant contribution to the organ repertoire.With the Opus 42 symphonies Widor shows his mastery and refinement of contrapuntal technique while exploring to the fullest the capabilities of the Cavaillé-Coll organs for which these works were written. Ralph Sauer has taken the final two sections of Bach's great organ composition Toccata, Adagio and Fugue in C major, BWV 564, and beautifully arranged them for 8-part Trombone Ensemble. It is about 9-minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers.The Adagio is in two sections. The first is almost cheerful in its minor key, but the 2nd part Grave is very dark and brooding. It was used during a satanic ritual scene in the 1934 Karloff/Lugosi film The Black Cat.The Fugue is in 4-voices in 6/8 and bounces along nicely till its dramatic ending.
