Ultimately, she sought a way to quickly make these skills relevant to understanding larger concepts of music theory. Traditionally, it takes a long time of learning individual skills before a student can grasp how they all work together. Pocket Piano Proficiency flips this model, introducing tasks in chunks of like material. The circle of fifths appears from the first pages, demonstrating connections between keys from the start. The book’s pedagogical organization moves students from the easiest to more complex skills, allowing them to scaffold successfully from one chapter to the next. The eBook format allows for a new way of learning these skills that a black and white printed book does not afford. Each page contains several layers of helpful material that can be accessed by zooming in and out. Its historic premiere at Pacifica Radio (KPFA) in Berkeley on 4 October, 1991 to inaugurate their new facility is included in Nicolas Slonimsky's book Music Since 1900. It has been reviewed and written about extensively. Tune: RESIGNATIONUse: Prelude, Offertory, PostludeA couple of years ago I read an interview with director Ridley Scott about his first commercially successful film, Alien. It’s a terrific science fiction/horror movie set on a large spaceship, with a predatory creature who is hunting down the human crew one by one. In the interview, Scott talked about the fact that there were scenes he wanted to film and effects he wanted to use, but his small budget prevented him from doing so. Instead, he was forced to make do with limited time and materials. Alien became a hit, and Scott went on to direct blockbusters like Gladiator and Hannibal.What stuck with me was what Scott said about creativity. It is his opinion that the budgetary constraints under which he operated when making Alien forced him to explore ideas and methods he wouldn’t have otherwise considered. Even though he would later make movies with ten times the budget, he’s extremely proud of what he and his team did with far more limited resources.When I started writing My Shepherd Will Supply My Need, I decided to give myself a big constraint: I would only be allowed to use the white keys of the piano. This is very different for me; I usually throw in some juicy harmonies. It was an interesting process, and I have to say that I agree with Ridley Scott: limits spark creativity. I’m going to look for other ways to apply this principle.I did go over budget slightly, and used one black key. Every flock has its black sheep, right?

Most decisions are based on their current skills and abilities, or where I would like for them to be when they complete the piece.This arrangement was made for a late beginner student currently working on Federation class Elementary 2. Some very tricky fingering in the right hand, but worth the trouble. I chose not to transpose to another key with less sharps because its actually easier with the black keys, in my opinion. Sometimes it's good to throw them a good challenge, and it paid off for me. This was actually a more successful performance than his Federation piece at our recital!

In simple terms, entropy is “lack of order or predictability; gradual decline into disorder.†Ironically, a successful performance of this piece requires a lot of order, organization, and control as it shows off so many of the technical skills of the performer, from scales and arpeggios to large leaps and a melody in thirds. Ophiuchus is known as the healer and is based on Ascelpius, son of Apollo. He holds the head and tail of the constellation Serpens, and in some illustrations the snake is wrapped around his waist. This gives us the symbol physicians use today. Ascelpius was such a successful healer, he even brought people back from the dead. He learned his healing arts from Chiron (constellation Centaurus), but learned the resurrection trick by watching a snake place a particular herb upon the body of a dead snake which miraculously returned to life. Ascelpius used the same herb on people. Hades worried that his realm would suffer loss of souls because of the healing power of Ascelpius, so Zeus killed him and placed him in the sky as a constellation. This piece was written in the same key as Serpens, Phrygian Major. It plunges into a vivid waltz, playful and joyful. It creates a strong contrast with the Lullaby. The pieces could be performed separately, but the effect is complete when playing them in succession as a cycle. They are equally entertaining for kids and adults.
