Legend has it that this old tune was discovered written on a scrap of paper found in a bottle which washed up on a beach in North Wales around 1900; its Welsh nickname Ton-y-Botel (Tune in a Bottle) comes from this story. The melody is also known as Ebenezer, named for Ebenezer Chapel where the actual composer attended services while writing this tune. Lyrics in sacred and secular contexts alike have been set to this famous melody. This dramatic piece begins with the arranger's original music rising in a theme accompanied by triplets, then moves into the powerful Welsh tune itself which in this creative arrangement is tossed from voice to voice, hand to hand. A strong sense of the love of Jesus rolling as a mighty ocean in its fullness over me as well as a tender confidence in it underneath me, all around me, is the current of thy love are the lingering emotions one feels as the same original music closes the piece with an impression of wonder. Some fingerings are included to facilitate reading but are merely suggestions. Pedaling has been written in, but again, is a suggestion. Because of its history, this music is adaptable to almost any circumstance, secular or sacred, where people gather for meaningful events: civic or military ceremonies, graduations, memorials, weddings, or church services of any denomination.

Likely the most popular of Shaker tunes, Simple Gifts remains a favorite in schools, folk concerts, and houses of worship. This tune gained popularity when it was included in Aaron Copland's score for the ballet Appalachian Spring. The melody has a decidedly traditional Celtic sound, but it was written by Elder Joseph Brackett of Maine in 1848. This intermediate arrangement is in the key of G and begins with 12/8 time counted in 4. The last page moves to a more regal and slower 4/4 meter then returns to echo the beginning 12/8 time to close. 4 pages and 2:10 minutes long

Intermediate Piano Solo Lyra has a Celtic feel to it. Lyra is visible in the northern hemisphere sky in the Summer Triangle. This constellation represents the golden lyre (a stringed instrument similar to a small harp) with which the musician and poet Orpheus could charm all listeners. With his music he prevented the Sirens from luring Jason and the Argonauts to their deaths. When his wife Eurydice died, he played songs that so moved the gods, they allowed him to lead Eurydice out of Hades to the land of the living. Neither of them were permitted to look back, but at the final moment, as he entered the living world, he looked back. Eurydice had not yet taken the final step out of the Underworld, and so was lost to him forever. After his death, his lyre was placed in the night sky by the Muses. The constellation was listed by Ptolemy in the second century. Fast and lively foot-tapping neo-Celtic, at its best on electronic keyboard but also a fun piano solo. (Duration 8+ minutes) Reel Jiggery-pokery The song started as a jig but drank too much and reeled into 12/8 time. Properly speaking, despite its strong 4-beat pulse, it's a Slide. Or perhaps a Double Jig. Except for the mid-section, which is really a Reel! Needless to say, this is not for the purists...but it's huge fun for the rest of us! Playing and Performing We've marked it Advanced Intermediate. It's the indicated speed which makes demands! But you can play it slower and enjoy! On electronic or MIDI keyboard, use a percussive/plucked foundation (e.g. piano, harp, faux guitar) with a sustained string patch (string ensemble, synth strings, viola works well, fiddle works well, most violin patches are terrible!). For piano, you'll have to use more of the sustain pedal but not too much or it'll go all muddy on you, just like a mis-step in an Irish bog! (Original live and YouTube performances were on a Medeli MC 710, from 2005. This keyboard allowed splitting and dual voices. Piano was used as foundation both above and below the split point. A loud viola patch was used as the second voice on the upper part of the keyboard, as the dominant fiddle sound carrying the melody. A synth string patch was used as second voice on the lower half, giving the drones.) Add Your Own Salt and Pepper to the Score! The song is scored for clarity, not as a detailed demand for every possible nuance. It's fast, so although simple to look at when not playing, you'll need to be reading the music at speed. Unless, of course, you're blessed with a brilliant memory! So the score isn't cluttered with ornaments and fiddly bits, or lots of expression marks. Especially, it's not cluttered by a lot of suspended notes. BUT...you will need to suspend a lot of notes as you play. Think drones running all over the place and use your keyboard sustaining string patches to bring those drones out! Listen to the live recordings, they'll help. You, as player, have lots of freedom! It's up to you how many additional frills, or emphasis, or drone suspensions you throw in. Why alt.callahans?In the far distant past of 2005, there was an Internet newsgroup of that name, in honor and emulation of Callahan's Crosstime Saloon, a fictional bar with strongly community-minded and empathic clientele, part of the fictional universe of American writer Spider Robinson. [Wikipedia] A place for tall tales and true, comradeship, puns both good and bad. We had fun there, and this song came out of it. The Internet world, sadly, has changed since.

Squall at Kilkee Bay is a lively, advanced intermediate piano solo, with a Celtic flavor. This arrangement has several keychanges, and helpful fingering. It's a great show-piece for recitals or just for fun. The title refers to an historic event, the shipwreck of the Edmond, in 1850 in Kilkee Bay, Ireland. The Edmond was battered by a fierce storm and pushed into the Bay, crashing against the rocks. A man by the name of Richard Russel was occupying a house on the bay. He was trying to secure his rattling bedroom window, when he spotted the distressed ship. He call the coastguard and then went down to the ship to try to help people to safety. He and 3 coastguards, James McCarthy, Timothy Hannigan, and Patrick Shannon rescued 100 passengers, men, women and children. Many others were not as fortunate. The 3 coastguards received silver medals for their heroic efforts. It's quite a story!
