The Devil's Millhopper is north Florida's most famous sinkhole, a 120-foot-deep bowl-shaped concavity formed in soluble limestone by the erosive action of water over millennia. This geological formation got its name because fossilized shark teeth, marine shells, and the shattered remains of extinct land animals have all been discovered in its depths, as if these hapless creatures, trapped in a gigantic hopper, had served as grist for the Evil One's mill. In this fiendishly difficult short piece, I have attempted to evoke not only the erosive forces of water and earth but also the buzzing of mosquitoes and other insects that invariably accompany those hardy enough to attempt the 232-step descent on a hot, humid summer day. Tonal ambiguity is intentionally maintained until just before the movement ends with a gentle chromatic cascade, by which point the terra firma of G Major is firmly established.

Published by Upstream Music (A0.933520). There are many more unfinished than completed compositions of Beethoven that have been preserved. ln these fragments one sees ideas for individual works. A large number of sketchbooks and sketches from the composer were preserved and are housed in libraries and private collections all over the globe. Some sketches are no more than brief experiments or short elaborated ideas, but there are also fragments preserved that nearly give us a complete picture of a composition. In the so-called Kafka sketchbook, which was published in 1970 in London, approximately 500 fragments of manuscripts were bundled that stem from 1786 - 1799. The Fantasia Sonata in D (deest 45) for piano forte in three parts, was hidden in the archives since 1792. This sonata of the young Beethoven, with striking similarities to the Moonlight sonata and the Pastorale has never been performed on stage. Young pianotalent Martin Oei played it for the first time in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, October 21st, 2012. The large, over 1100 bars comprising torso now known as Fantasia Sonata in D from 1792, cannot be called a sketch anymore, although Beethoven has not completed the work and used many ideas in other, later works. The reconstruction of the sketches was done by the Dutch Beethoven musicologist and composer Cees Nieuwenhuizen. The piece was probably written in Bonn, three years before he started to write his first official piano sonata of a series of 32 sonatas. In November 1792 Beethoven went from Bonn to Vienna to study with the famous composer Joseph Haydn (1732–1809). Beethoven rapidly proceeded to make his mark as a brilliant keyboard performer and as a gifted young composer with a number of works to his credit. In 1795 his first mature published works appeared, and his career was officially launched. Striking harmonies The re-using of previously drafted material is quite common in Beethoven's works. Apparently the material wasn't yet ripe enough at the time of its origination, or perhaps Beethoven changed his mind with regards to the new composition. This could very well be so regarding the torso from Kafka’s sketchbook that we now call the Piano Fantasia sonata in D. This piece contains 1100 bars of music, not taking into account the alternative bars. The piece is composed by Beethoven in 1792 - 1793 and was set up as a tripartite sonata in D with remarkable abnormalities in terms of form and content. There are striking harmonies that cannot be found in other works composed in that same period. It’s possible that the composer didn’t have the courage to publish it or that indeed the time was not yet ripe for it. Finally the composer let the draft go and never came back to it. Or did he? Thematic similarities We find phrases in several later works that share similarities with ideas and themes from Fantasia sonata in D. The first part of Fantasia sonata has the same theme as the trio of the third movement of Symphony no. 7 (in A Major Opus 92). Even the key and also the rhythm in 3/4 time are the same. This cannot be a coincidence. Similar mood and thematic parallels can be found in the Pastorale, the Sonata for piano no. 15 (Opus 28): it is striking that this piece is also composed in D and in 3/4 time. We find similar dramatic expression in the Sonata for piano no. I 7 in d minor Opus 31 no. 2. The second movement of the Fantasia sonata nearly has the same theme as the second movement of the Sonata for piano no. 23 in minor (the Appassionato Opus 57). Martin Oei, Daiel Wayenberg, Cees Nieuwenhuizen at The World Premiere in The Concertgebouw Beethoven begins the third movement of the Fantasia sonata with the main theme of the first movement, but now in e minor. lts appearance in minor is an entirely new idea. Nevertheless Beethoven doesn't elaborate the idea any further because it disappears after 29 bars. Now a new agitated theme starts in d minor, which was announced in the first movement, but now reappears in its complete.

Here is George Gershwin's version of I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles, which I arranged based on a Gershwin piano roll from the early 20th century. It was held in a private collection for decades. Here for the first time is my sheet music arrangement for this classic from long ago. Before he was famous, George was what was known as a song plugger. He would play newly composed songs to help generate record sales. In the early 20th century, many homes had player pianos. His compositions belong to the Romantic period of music history. He graduated at the Moscow Conservatory in 1892. After the premiere of his First Symphony in 1897, the negative reaction by an important critic sent him into a tailspin of depression that lasted several years. ♫ In 1909 he performed a series of 26 performances with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the USA. In 1914 he travelled to England for a concert tour. ♫ In February 1917 on the day the Socialist Revolution began in St Petersburg, he performed a benefit piano recital in Moscow for wounded Russian soldiers. When he returned home, he found that a group of Social Revolutionary Party members had seized his property as their own communal property. He had invested most of his earnings on the estate, but left it behind. Rachmaninoff's concert performance in Yalta on 5 September 1917 was to be his last in Russia. The chaos and tension of the October Revolution was daunting. He composed with the noise of gunshots and rallies in the background. He received an invitation to perform 10 recitals across Scandinavia. He accepted the offer, using it as an excuse to obtain permits so he and his family could flee Russia. ♫ He returned to the USA in November 1918 and America became his home. The islands’ population have always been very small (currently numbering around 50), yet, aside from the official anthem of God Save the King (which is not heard often on the islands), there have been, and continue to be, many unofficial anthems in use in the colony.In Diana Jolliffe Belcher’s 1871 book “The Mutineers of the Bounty and their Decendants in Pitcairn and Norfolk Island†it is reported that a local poem by Rev. G. H. Nobbs was set to the tune “Rousseau’s Dream†(sheet music) and was considered by Pitcairners to be their anthem at the time. It is not known for how long this was considered as their anthem, however. Also, in 1856, several Pitcairners resettled on Norfolk Island as Pitcairn had become too small. The local anthem now in use on Norfolk Island, Come Ye Blessed, is also referred to as the “Pitcairn Anthemâ€, and more than likely was brought to the island by the Pitcairn settlers, suggesting that this anthem was in use on Pitcairn at that time, and is also heard on Pitcairn currently.Currently, the song “We From Pitcairn Island†(to the tune of the hymn “The Royal Telephoneâ€) is used as an unofficial anthem at gatherings and the like. The lyrics were written by Pitcairner Melva Evans with assistance from the local Seventh Day Adventist Pastor L. A. J. Webster in 1962 to be performed by the school children on board a visiting cruise ship, but the song became identified by residents as their unofficial anthem. Other songs, such as “The Goodbye Song†(written by Pitcairner Amelia Young), and the hymn “In The Sweet By and By†are considered unofficial “Pitcairn songs†at gatherings as well. In my imagination, Prylis was the dance performed in 1803, before the Greek Revolution, by women of Souli, a village of Hepiros in North-West Greece, while on the run of the Ottomans were thrown by themselves one by one from the cliffs of the mount Zalongo not to be captured and disgraced by them becoming a symbol of heroism and self-sacrifice over the years!

A review originally published by the New York Herald on Sunday, 13 January 1901, entitled German Composer who Writes American Cakewalk Music describes [h]is knowledge of bass and counterpoint is thorough, and his standard compositions bear the stamp of harmonic lore, which makes his proclivity for the writing of the popular style of music the more remarkable. He was an early member (1923) of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). He earned his livelihood as composer/arranger for Tin Pan Alley publishers, including Leo Feist. He later was advertising manager for the American Federation of Musicians publication, International Musician. He was a member of Freemasonry, the Elks, and Knights of Pythias, all in New York City. Holzmann died in East Orange, New Jersey at age 64. He was survived by his widow, a daughter Natalie Holzmann, three half-brothers, and four sisters. His music was especially revered by ragtime enthusiasts, although he composed marches, waltzes, and other light music. Faure Pavane in F Sharp Minor Op.50 Arranged for Solo Piano is my arrangement of this beautiful work by Gabriel Fauré with that wonderful melody that is haunting, ethereal and memorable. The Pavane was first performed in 1888 in its orchestral version, with a version with choir appearing a few days later. The dotted notes give the famous melody a lovely sense of movement and lilt and the harmonies are romantic and nostalgic, and has made this piece so popular and well loved, and has inspired Pavanes by other composers including Debussy and Ravel. Faure's harmonies move from familiar places with a development section that eventually emerges in A major which feels like alien territory. Nevertheless the harmonies are beautiful, comforting and nostalgic. There are a few deceptive cadences including the B dominant 7th chord near the conclusion before a return to the tonic in F Sharp Minor. This piece is wonderful to play and listen to. Enjoy!

Four-part suite The Seasons for narrator and orchestra Lithuanian composer Kazys Daugėla created on the basis of K. Donelaitis poem The Seasons plots and the most famous artist Vytautas Kazimieras Jonynas (1907-1997) woodcut illustrations. These Donelaitis poem The Seasons illustrations have become classics of Lithuanian art. Composer created his paintings of the suite using native Lithuania Minor folk song melodies. Some of them are written almost 200 years ago. Most songs used are from Christian Bartsch prepared and published by Lithuanian folk songs Song of the votes. If you do not doubt that the song’s soul is in the melody, it should also be true, that the song is understood correctly only when we sing or listen to it – so believed Ch. Bartsch. He could not possibly foresee that the songs that sounded at his time will be wiped out in parallel with the East Prussian population. But after all, maybe he did predict? Therefore, he was rescuing them. The ancient epics and worldview associate The Seasons with cyclical idea of time, which is expressed by the view of The Sun’s path in the sky. The main hero of this musical work is The Sun and the diversity of nature, life and work associated with it. In the Eternal Circle we born, age, die - everything repeats, nothing new happens. In the second part of the The Cares of Winter, the Lithuanian traditional Advent song Sodai, sodai, leliumoj was used and developed.

One of the most famous Brazilian songs and one of the best known compositions by Chiquinha Gonzaga, the modinha Lua branca has a history surrounded by mystery. It was written for the burleta Forrodobó, performed at Teatro São José in June 1912, as a modinha for the characters Sá Zeferina and Escandanhas, whose original verses maintain the caricature spirit of the play. In 1929, this romantic version appeared with the title Lua branca (White Moon), recorded by the singer Gastão Formenti, without the authorship of the verses and the new title being known to this day. Between the two versions, there was an arrangement on disc with the title Lua de fulgores by the singer R. Ricciardi, pseudonym of the paulista Paraguassu, but it was the version recorded by Gastão Formenti, accompanied on the piano by professor J. Otaviano, and the Irmãos Vitale edition with harmonization by the pianist that became famous. Chiquinha Gonzaga had to claim authorship of the modinha, denouncing plagiarism and obtaining victory through Sbat, an entity she founded. The original version was recorded as a comic scene by Pinto Filho and Maria Vidal, in 1930, with the title Sá Zeferina. Also the original melody with verses by Paulo César Pinheiro, entitled Serenata de uma mulher (A Woman's Serenade), was recorded by OlÃvia Hime in 1998. The version canonized as Lua branca has numerous phonograph records by singers and instrumentalists such as Paulo Tapajós, Paulo Fortes, Rosemary, Vânia Carvalho, Maria Bethânia, Verônica Sabino, Leila Pinheiro, Joana, Alessandra Maestrini, Antonio Adolfo, Eudóxia de Barros, Rosária Gatti, Marcus Vianna, Maria Teresa Madeira, and Leandro Braga.
