This piece is one of an album of my contemporary classical compositions. Yes, I too wince at offering you something saddled with this oxymoron--contemporary classical--but this phrase is now an irresistible, commercially recognized category defying any principled protest from the ranks of wounded musicological curmudgeons like me. The style here employs a tonal palette that celebrates the more or less common practice of composers from J. S. Bach to Ravel, Prokofiev, and the 20th century American songbook. You will see that I reject Arnold Schoenberg's assertion that by 1910 tonality had exhausted itself, and needed to be reinvented according to an aesthetics that dismiss our scales and harmonies as purely arbitrary human conventions with no basis in nature. On the contrary, I believe that we are endowed by our nature to respond emotionally to our traditional materials of music in the same way as nature equips us to respond to the taste of food and drink. We differ in our taste for savory, sweet, and sour, but it is wrong to say that our very capacity to taste is a merely cultural convention. There is biology, and then physics too! By the same standard, it can't be true that one person's taste for arsenic is as valid as another's taste for beer or kumquats. The major triad is a force of nature, like the sun, wind, and rain! I also like big fat juicy 13 chords, and contrapuntal weaving of melody! I believe the purpose of music is to sway us emotionally, and if it can uplift us too, so much the better! While I am not ashamed to write a bare triad, unadorned by chromatic alterations (much less by clusters of chord collisions) I have nevertheless employed much complicated harmony. Moreover, some passages are written in a spiky harmony that might be analyzed as bitonal, as at the meno mosso section, beginning at measure 112, where the mood I wanted to set inspired me to write the theme in C minor while the left hand climbs up from the bottom of the keyboard in a widely spaced, D-flat 13 arpeggio. I have composed these pieces with the skills of intermediate to early-advanced pianists in mind. This piece demands the ability to play some counterpoint between two voices in one hand. There is a section that requires one to play moderately fast octaves, but nothing as difficult as the G minor Prelude of Chopin (to say nothing of his harrowing octave Etude from Opus 25!) While there are many polyrhythmic passages, none is more complicated than two-against-three notes. All said, there is nothing here to make your hands (or, I dare say, your ears) bleed. The performing time is around nine minutes and a breath or three. Piano transcription of the 3rd movement from Mahler's 1st SymphonyMahler’s 1st Symphony represents a gigantic narration of nature’s power, starting from its birth out of the inorganic up towards a grueling struggle between the good and the evil of all living beings. The 1st movement brings in fact the famous indication Wie ein Naturlaut (like a natural sound) which is rendered melodically with the interval of descending 4th (the interval symbol of man); the course of nature passes from brighter areas to darker ones but manages to flow into the 2nd movement, which is a decisive and sure triumph of life, a feeling ripe with flourishing and fruitfulness. The 3rd movement is the moment in which the destructive and deadly aspect of nature appears more clear than ever, a movement showing what Freud called the Das Unheimlich which Mahler represents by inserting the melody of the song Frère Jacques (Brother John), repurposed in a minor key like a macabre and grotesque funeral march. This existential laceration will recompose itself in the 4h and last movement, in which the final struggle between the negative and the positive force of nature will take place.The transcription is of medium/advanced level, and it includes as much music as possible from Mahler's original score. It is also useful for study purposes at the piano if paired with the orchestral score.

Programme Notes - Solo Piano Work In 2006, I was living on the hills which form the border between England and Wales; this is deemed to be an area of special scientific interest where the many wonders of Nature abound. Rhaeadr means 'waterfall' in the Welsh language and my piece is a sound picture of the myriad forms, shapes, stillnesses and polar dynamic forces that waterfalls can evoke; from thundering torrents and sunlit pools to droplets and sprays that spirit into being, white and ghostly mists before our very eyes. The music begins with a ‘trickling’ movement from the top of the waterfall and makes it’s way down, crashing into rocks, swerving around them and almost coming to a halt in a shallow, sunlit pool which lies, temporarily, in a plateau. Then, finding a crevice to squeeze through, the water continues it’s unrelenting descent - finally reaching the bottom of the hill and coming to rest in calm liquidity. My thanks go to the pianist, Marija Vrskova at the FAMES studio in Macedonia where Rhaeadr was recorded under my remote direction and mixed and mastered by Laurent Köpitz and his commendable team. The magical sounds of nature and the myths surrounding this forest were what kept me company during many cold, endless nights of sentry guard duty. On such nights, I would often let my imagination soar, making up stories and music. It was during one of those moments of spontaneous inspiration that I came up with the opening motif for this piece.The piece tries to musically depict the different feelings a questing knight experiences when he sets off into the depths of the forest and back. Just like all typical chivalric romances, the hero discovers something remarkable while he travels - something that has the power to change him forever. Although by the end of the story the hero returns back to where he started, he is now a different person since the adventure forced him to undergo a catharsis.

The 24 pieces contained in my Short Stories for piano were composed between 2013-2018. I had originally grouped the pieces into a collection titled The Well-Blended Primer (subsequently withdrawn). I substantially revised, in some cases reconceived, the entire collection in 2017-18. Because my original intention was to include pieces that exhibited pitch centricity around each of the 24 possible major and minor keys, the earlier title, refering to J. S. Bach's 2-volume Das wohltemperierte Klavier, seemed to fit. As in Bach's work, some of the pieces in my collection exhibited a pronounced contrapuntal attitude. During the development of the work I had planned to alternate prelude and fugue-like pieces, but the end result was more of a hybrid collection that could be thought of as being influenced by Bach, but even more so by Chopin's group of 24 one-of-each-key Preludes, and systematically key-centered contrapuntal collections by Hindemith and Shostakovich. I was also influenced by shorter character pieces by composers such as Schumann, Debussy and Prokofiev that exhibit a more lyrical, narrative nature, to name only a few composers. In Short Stories, my plan to alternate preludes and fugues, or at least to systematically vary the degree of contrapuntal density, isn't readily perceived. There is certainly enforced variety in pitch centricity, but this feature isn't arranged symmetrically, and there is a range of tonal, modal, chromatic and atonal languages explored in the collection. Stylistically, there are many influences to be heard here. In fact, some of the titles of the individual pieces refer to other piano composers (for example Tea with Claude and Maurice, Czerny's Id, George Sand's Dream and Joplin's Tick). The name of the present work, Short Stories, describes these modest narratives better than the original title and the revised collection is less abstract than the 2013 version. From a pianist's standpoint, I would venture to say, these reconceived pieces are more concerned with color, register and voicings particular to the instrument. Some of the more extensive revisions I made to the original pieces were stylistic ones involving changes in the harmonic language and articulation. In other cases I fleshed out sketch- like miniatures into more substantially developed portraits, or conversely, I deleted what I thought might be considered to be extraneous material that obscured the abbreviated sketch-like nature of the narration. Published by Edgars Samorodovs (A0.1033148). This piece portrays one miraculous day out in nature with the weather, as well as the tunes and moods changing constantly. Here I used every piano register to create contrasts. It begins with the sun rising over the horizon with piano tremolo in a high register almost as a dew dripping from the grass, impressionistic melody in the middle register, and more forceful intervals in the lower register as a sign, that something majestic awaits. The next part is an innocent, lightsome fugue with baroque elements, that ends on a minor scale, creating suspense and uncertainty. After a little melancholic section in Largo (slow tempo), the storm has finally started. Thunder - Dramatic octaves in the lower register with glimpses of melody from the intro turn into a tempestuous dance with arpeggios in the left hand and somewhat sweet melody in the right hand. The last section is a calm after the storm. Little raindrops falling from the roofs in the upper register create the melody from the intro as if reminiscing of how joyful was the beginning of the day. The piece finishes with a feeling of unfulfillment and expectation of what surprises the new day will bring.

The song is arranged in the keys of C and D giving the student an easy flowing song to learn with no sharps or flats and then practice with two sharps. The practice notes at the beginning of the piece gives examples and exercises to reinforce the 3/4 time signature also in the two keys. Very nice beginning piece for a first recital piece. .
