Published by Phil Beaman (A0.1121678). I Love You Truly is based on the 1906 hit pop song by Carrie Jacobs-Bond; a song which stayed on the charts for nearly 40 years. I have created a piano solo of 4 variations with each variation getting further from the original theme and each progressing further into jazz. Variation I - I utilize rich chords of the ballads of that period. Variation II - I rhythmically augment the melody, simplify the texture, and add chromatic passing tones and progressions. Variation III - I set this in stride jazz with syncopated riffing based on the melody. Variation IV - I make this one a slower, bolder jazz with various triplet patterns on fragments of melody and a strong jazz chord progression based on fifths. 5 page score; 2:51 minutes This piece is also found in my book, Carrie Jacobs-Bond, Popular Songs 1900-1925, a collection of 51 of her songs I have arranged for piano solo, which is also available on this site.

Water is serene, soothing, calming, but also chaotic, unpredictable, and at times relentless. Follow the story of the song as you are taken on a journey. A personal experience inspired this dynamic piano solo. It begins with a simple motif that depicts looking out over the ocean which is then followed by getting into the water. The next section, also the longest, goes through the process of losing control to the water and the realization of possibly drowning. The frantic section is followed by a contrasting section, which imitates a lost and worn out feeling. This part demonstrates the feeling of helplessness and the acceptance that it might end, but is then followed by a phrase that is repeated in different keys. Finally, the triumphant section plays the previous phrase once more with fuller chords and a key signature, bringing back structure and sanity to this experience. Though, an accidental in this section leaves the feeling that tension may still be in the experience and that not all was fully well.

This piece is a free adaptation and a complete reworking of a study by Felix Le Couppey (1811-1887), from his L'Agilité, Opus 20, 25 Progressive Studies for Mechanism and Light Touch. In its original form, this study was a charming little piece of musical fluff. But getting it up to speed reduced me to tears! It also gave me an epiphany of immense power that transformed my technique. Suddenly I could play faster than I had ever thought possible, and I could do so with a thrilling ease! This epiphany emerged from the spluttering frustration I felt over my inability to play these sixteenth notes at Le Couppey's metronome marking of 144. It dawned on me that I couldn’t play fast enough because I was tripping over my own fingers when I used the overly articulated technique of moving the fingers by the lift, throw, relax method. This superfluous motion creates an impenetrable barrier, a speed wall, as does playing legato scales by passing the thumb under the palm, when shifting hand position up and down the keyboard. So I found another way-which I’ve since learned was known to every pianist who ever achieved prodigious speed. Here’s how to bring this piece up to speed with ease: Be sure to practice this piece with each hand alone. For each group of sixteenth notes, gently place the four fingers down simultaneously, to get the feel. Think of your arm, from elbow to fingertips, as something like a kitchen utensil, such as a spatula. Moving your right arm as a unit, place your finger tips down into the key bed, depressing all four notes at once, as a block chord. Make sure that all the fingers remain stiff (not rigid with tension, but just stiff enough to resist collapsing upwards.) Slowly lift and then play each group by placing all the fingers down with a rotation of your forearm, calm and relaxed, with the fingers rolling through the notes at the speed of a brief snare drum roll: Rrrrip! To rip through this group of notes like this takes no more effort than to place those four fingers down, calmly, all at once! Then, with a quick shift up or down the keyboard to get into position for the next group, that’s the whole trick for playing such passages with astonishing speed and ease! It takes time and effort to get the knack here, but the result can be transformative and thrilling! As for my adaptation of this study, I believe it offers intermediate advanced players the chance to enjoy a great leap in technique like the one I experienced, and also offers a piece of music that one might not blush to play outside the practice room-perhaps bringing it at least into the living room for a soirée, if not into the concert hall. To make this adaptation, I wrote a grumbly bass line with lungs, and nice fat chords to flesh out most of the skinny little triads that accompany the original study’s fast passages. I added a brooding, chromatic introduction that features as a melody the accompanimental figure of a broken triad that Le Couppey wrote a few times on the second page, in various inversions. I employed this broken chord figure several more times in both hands, and also added a little coda, sprinkled with sparkle. Playing time is about 1 minute and 30 seconds.

Famously used in the 1967 film Elvira Madigan, hence the nickname, the Elvira Madigan concerto, Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 was completed soon after his 20th in 1785. There are 5 different arrangements for solo piano, each getting progressively harder and trying not to compromise on sound where possible: Level 1: Just over a minute long, this is the easiest version. Both hands are very simple and are very close together, making it easier to see what all the fingers are doing at the same time. No jumps greater than a fifth and no large chords, making it perfect for smaller hands. Level 2: Two version provided: the first just over a minute long; the second the complete length of the movement, minus the orchestra introduction. Again, the melody has been simplified, though harder than level 1, with an increased coverage of the piano. The accompaniment is either static chords (now triads as standard) or broken arpeggios. It now has jumps in the right hand of just over an octave, with the left hand moving relatively little between chords/arpeggios. Level 3: This version has an optional cut, otherwise is the complete second movement, minus the orchestral introduction. Similar to level 2, only one hand tends to be changing pitches/rhythms at any one time, but the right hand is now almost the same as Mozart’s original (with some ornamentation removed or written out in full). The left hand now has the familiar broken-chord pattern (see opening bars) but in simple rather than compound time. On the whole, the left hand moves relatively little between chords, although there are now some larger jumps when the right hand is static. Level 4: Like level 3, but with the broken chord in compound time throughout. Some of the orchestral accompaniment has been integrated into the music, though simplified. Level 5: The hardest version, more difficult than the original solo piano part. Still no orchestral introduction. Includes more of the orchestral accompaniment than level 4. This, in essence, is a piano transcription of the full orchestration for piano and orchestral. Famously used in the 1967 film Elvira Madigan, hence the nickname, the Elvira Madigan concerto, Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 was completed soon after his 20th in 1785. There are 5 different arrangements for solo piano, each getting progressively harder and trying not to compromise on sound where possible: Level 1: Just over a minute long, this is the easiest version. Both hands are very simple and are very close together, making it easier to see what all the fingers are doing at the same time. No jumps greater than a fifth and no large chords, making it perfect for smaller hands. Level 2: Two version provided: the first just over a minute long; the second the complete length of the movement, minus the orchestra introduction. Again, the melody has been simplified, though harder than level 1, with an increased coverage of the piano. The accompaniment is either static chords (now triads as standard) or broken arpeggios. It now has jumps in the right hand of just over an octave, with the left hand moving relatively little between chords/arpeggios. Level 3: This version has an optional cut, otherwise is the complete second movement, minus the orchestral introduction. Similar to level 2, only one hand tends to be changing pitches/rhythms at any one time, but the right hand is now almost the same as Mozart’s original (with some ornamentation removed or written out in full). The left hand now has the familiar broken-chord pattern (see opening bars) but in simple rather than compound time. On the whole, the left hand moves relatively little between chords, although there are now some larger jumps when the right hand is static. Level 4: Like level 3, but with the broken chord in compound time throughout. Some of the orchestral accompaniment has been integrated into the music, though simplified. Level 5: The hardest version, more difficult than the original solo piano part. Still no orchestral introduction. Includes more of the orchestral accompaniment than level 4. This, in essence, is a piano transcription of the full orchestration for piano and orchestral.
