Just Try to Steal a Cookie Blues is a late elementary, Blues style, piece which my students really enjoy playing. A main focus of the piece is in the B section where students learn that their hands can play on top of one another, just like in Debussy's Golliwog's Cakewalk. The melody's suggestion is that of sneaking past mom, or dad, to steal a cookie. Students must control their technique in order to make the piece sound sneaky. Chromatic finger work is highlighted in the B section as well. A fun performance piece I am sure your students will enjoy very much! .

It's arranged by Stacy Fahrion/Whimsically Macabre Music (ASCAP).I get really excited when music can carry multiple contradictory meanings, and spend a lot of time thinking about how I can mess with my audience by making things sound familiar but wrong. When I saw the Rachel, Jack, and Ashley Too episode of Black Mirror, I recognized the melody of the oddly upbeat pop song Ashley O was singing but couldn't quite place it because unconsciously I knew something was really off, and then slowly it dawned on me that it was a NIN cover, and I flipped out with utter joy that someone had just done something to me that I'm constantly trying to do to them. Every time the song played throughout the episode, I couldn't stop laughing, not just at the lyrics, but especially at a certain trite & upbeat sounding bassline and all of the different musical elements that completely changed the feel of the original. So of course I needed to write my own arrangement of that arrangement. I hope you enjoy it. For Kay - Because the Lady doesn’t necessarily like Milk Tray! Back in the late 50’s when I was a kid, my elder brother and I used to spend numerous hours playing in the woods and as a team we’d catch anything that was catchable, such as lizards, newts, frogs, shrews, slow worms etc. One time our cousins Angela and Kay came to stay and just for a laugh, we acquired an empty chocolate box, added a few lizards, and gave it to Kay (who was 5 at the time). Clearly Kay didn’t appreciate how difficult it was to catch the lizards and reckons she’s been traumatised for the last 60 odd years. I keep telling her that I was only an innocent accomplice and my brother was the instigator.Anyway, this piece is for Kay with love to help ease the trauma.This piece requires at least a 76 note (6 octaves) keyboard. I would rate this as MODERATELY DIFFICULT, but very satisfying.

It's such a good melody I think it survives this treatment very well and sounds kind of cool, though I say so myself!I like to keep my arrangements as simple and easy to read as possible so I avoid pedal markings, dynamics and fingering all of which you'd struggle to find two piano teachers to agree on so I leave them to the discretion of the individual pianist.If the intervals of 10ths are too big for your hands, as is often the case, they can be 'rolled' or just play the root note in octaves or even single notes.Please note I don't include notation for the other instruments on my YouTube recording it is simply a piano solo. It was written as a piano solo so it sounds perfect just like that.I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I enjoyed arranging it. Best of luck.

This is my first time I have written a piece that doesnot have a standard structure. It is also the first time that I have expressed my feelings about Australia through music, inspired by Lawson’s moving poem. The reason why I name my piece ‘Consciousness2.0’ is because it depicts a picture of how people rise and fall in life. An example of this is what happened during the Australian bushfires, which was a time when people were very aware of what was happening. Consciousness means to be aware and responsive to the surroundings, and it can also mean a person’s perspective of events. My piece begins with a soft introduction, which describes the life of Australia and its unique environment. From the bustling cities to the open country, there is always some life around Australia. Sometimes there is also some wild weather, which is represented in the arpeggiated left hand (bars 10-14). The story then shifts its focus to the animals, through short 2-part phrase in bars 23-26. The animals areenjoying their time in nature. The phrase is in Aeolian mode, so there is a bit of mystery instead of having an obvious key. Then, the parallel fifths depict the openness and vastness of the land. The transition is shown in bars 32-34 by a smooth 4-part phrase going downwards. The next fast section (bars 35-47) describes the rise of panic, just like a howling heat of the bushfire. The chromatic 7th chords (bars 36,38) make a sense of tension, and after 3 times, the chromaticism makes its way to a recent memory of the rushing semiquavers (bars 43-44) After the bushfires came closer, animals panicked as they rushed and left their precious homes. It was devastating to see how many people were affected, with houses destroyed, people and animals burning into the ashes (bars 48-54). Then there is another new section (bars 55-68) which describes the uncertainty, for example, the right-handquavers describe a flashback of nature planning itself to create a bushfire, or the times when people were planning a solution to this incident. The uncertainty was unfolded when the fast right hand semiquavers come back, (bars 69-82) creating a whoosh of destruction disappointment and adjustment. The last part is the ending of story (bars 84 to end). Though the fire has made a lot of destruction, with Aussie spirit, there is always hope that everyone can rebuild a new and better community in the future

This arrangement came to me over a number of weeks in a very organic way that began with the ostinato piano figure that prevails throughout the piece. I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense – like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head – I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that I’m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll. One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing “Beyond the Sea†over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasn’t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didn’t mean what I thought they meant… They’re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind of… I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them. Somewhere beyond the seaShe’s there watching for me…It’s far beyond the starsIt’s near beyond the moon And the lyrics end with them meeting, “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just like before,†and the song ends with: “and never again I’ll go sailing.†It’s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan. Performance Suggestions: The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional “scat syllables†and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson and Sara Gazarek improvise on ballads for inspiration.

Here for the first time is my sheet music arrangement for this classic from long ago. Before he was famous, George was what was known as a song plugger. He would play newly composed songs to help generate record sales. In the early 20th century, many homes had player pianos. George's performance was preserved on such a roll and is only now available to the general public.Composed in 1918 by John W. Collette. The phrase “blowing bubbles” symbolizes the act of chasing dreams, hopes, and aspirations. Just like soap bubbles that float away and disappear, dreams can be elusive, fleeting, and transient. Everybody Deserves Somebody to Love is a musical story in which two characters, who work together, are at a joyful party, with lots of dancing and drinking. Both are in love with each other but social, family, and professional issues prevent them from getting together. However, one of the characters absorbed by the joy of the party (too much to drink, maybe) decides to insist in the relationship. The other character is hesitant and afraid to face such challenge. At the end of the song they decide to take the chance. The piece is structured in a rondó form with the following parts that I called: Introduction (I); A; B; C; I; A; D; A; C; I; A. Imagine a rock and habanera cake with Scarlatti syrup. The layers are: A: An invitation. They say phrases like: “Come to me because I need you nowâ€. B: Expression of pure desire with phrases such as: Hey! I can Ìt control myself now. B could be called A’. C: In a syncopated rhythm is argumentation. One party is trying to convince the other about assuming their relationship singing like that: “Everybody deserves somebody to love. I can help you to carry on. Just give your life a second chanceâ€. D: Is a moment of reflection. One of the characters is at greater risk and says: I´m afraid, love hurts sometimes. It won´t be so easy to start a new life now.â€.
