Juan MarÃa Solare León protegiendo a su crÃa (Lion protecting its cub) This short minimalist prelude for piano was composed in Bremen on 9 and 10 November 2021. It is minimalist in the aesthetic sense of the word: few elements, many repetitions, minimal variations. But not in the historical sense: traditional minimalism abounds in consonance, in quiet sonorities; this prelude is rather arid, not particularly consonant, and only a step away from irritation or fury. The work emerged as an elaboration of an improvisation for the Digitaler Adventskalender 2021 project of the Landesmusikrat Bremen. And the title is inspired by the doll of a lion with its cub that was given to me many years ago. This complements an allusion to the unique minimalism of Charlemagne Palestine, who tends to play his concerts surrounded by stuffed animals. Of course, the doll's innocent appearance is deceptive. ISBN 9790203701415.Die Literatur fur angehende, junge Klavierspieler, die bildhaft, expressiv, nuancenreich und serios auftritt und zugleich, bei relativ einfachem Spielniveau, hohen kompositorischen Anspruchen standhalt, ist nicht sehr umfangreich. Das Setiner Tagebuch, das 15 leichte Stucke zu zwei und vier Handen enthalt, bereichert das klavierpadagogische Repertoire durch eine gluckliche Mischung aus variablen Spieltechniken und inhaltlichen Anregungen und besticht durch seine musikantische Qualitat, die auch auf den Konzertpodium ihre Wirkung nicht verfehlt. Der kleine Ort Sezze (lateinisch: Setia) sudlich von Rom, ist seit Jahrzehnten Koerppens zweite, setiner Heimat. Hier entstanden im August 1999 die vom Licht und vom Fluidum dieser geschichtstrachtigen Landschaft gepragten Miniaturen. Klassische Mythologie, nachtliche Impressionen, einfache Formen und hintergrundiger Humor sprechen aus den Titeln, die ohne aufdringliche Programmmusik in leicht verstandliche, aber ernst zu nehmende Klaviermusik umgesetzt werden. Anknupfend an die Tradition kompetenter musikalisch-didaktischer Werke (Bach, Schumann, Bartok) werden unterschiedliche Kompositionstechniken vorgefuhrt, die auf altere und neuere tradierte Modelle verweisen. Im zwolften Stuck, Galaxis, benutzt Koerppen nicht ohne ironische Distanz sogar die Zwolftontechnik, die sonst kaum zu seinem kompositorischen Vokabular gehort.

Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q11149). Der im Herbst 2011 entstandene kleine Variationszyklus über einen Ländler von Schubert entstand zwar aus Anlass des Petrushka-Projekts von Schott. Da mir aber kleine Aufträge grundsätzlich zu groß geraten, beschloss ich, aus der Not eine Tugend zu machen und einfach ein richtiges großes Stück en miniature zu schreiben. Der Witz des Zyklus besteht darin, dass er trotz seiner nur 5minütigen Spieldauer (ohne Widerholungen sind es sogar nur dreieinhalb Minuten) ein ausgewachsener Variationszyklus mit den wichtigsten Merkmalen dieser Form ist. Das tänzerische Element des a-Moll-Themas verschwindet immer mehr bis zu einem dramatischen Trauermarsch in der vierten Variation, um dann in der letzten Variation wieder zu dem Schubert’schen Original zurück zu finden, allerdings in A-Dur und in langsamerem Tempo, so dass sich in seiner bitteren Süße sogar noch ein Überbieten des typischen Schubert-Tons ereignet. Das kleine Opus ist das Schwester-Werk des etwas umfangreicheren Variationszyklus op.64 Variationen über einen Ländler von Schubert für Klavier zu vier Händen, mit dem es in mancherlei inhaltlichem und musikalisch-formalem Zusammenhang steht. - Stefan Heucke.

ABOUT MOBILE (by Ricardo Descalzo, pianist) Few compositions have impressed me as much in my life as this genius work by the Brazilian composer, pianist and improviser. I remember that when I found it a few years ago I did not give credit to what I was listening and I could not imagine how those sounds were produced without any electronic manipulation. The idea of using cylindrical neodymium magnets inside the piano, shows that there are no limits in the imagination of the composers and that the resources to be used in our instrument are unlimited, even if there is an increasingly frequent number of people in our professional environment who hate these practices. The idea of combining precise writing with improvised fragments seems to me to fit perfectly with the spirit of the work, which was born from the improvisational world of the composer herself. Mobile is a tribute to John Cage (hence the classic screws and washers) and is inspired by the sculpture of Richard Lippold Gemini that, at the same time, served as inspiration for the Sonatas XIV and XV of the American composer. Mobile evokes an imaginary metal sculpture, a sound automaton and its cyclic movements. The result is a gorgeous universe of bells, ghostly echoes and distant ritual drums. Mobile is an essential part of my concert programs since it entered my life and one of the pieces that every year I work with my students in Musikene. I’m sure that it will become a classic of new piano music. I can only say: thanks, Michelle for creating something so beautiful, so original and so pleasant to play.
