One of the earliest CDs I bought was a CBS Great Performances disc entitled “Pachelbel’s Canon: Baroque Favorites.†I can recall listening to it over and over. Among my favorites were Handel’s “The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba,†Mouret’s “Rondeau,†Albinoni’s “Adagio for Strings and Organ in G minor (which I later discovered was actually written by Remo Giazotto in 1958), and, of course, Pachelbel’s Canon in D.The Canon has been a source of musical inspiration to a great number of artists over the years including Maroon 5’s “Memories†in 2019 and George Winston’s “Variations on the Kanon by Johann Pachelebel†from his 1982 album December.My arrangement is a series of variations starting with a simple statement of the chord progression and gradually making use of the themes as the piece progresses. In this respect, it is more of a chaconne than a true canon. (A chaconne being a type of musical composition which uses a repeated short harmonic progression as a vehicle for variations and melodic invention). It eventually works its way to a section of forte chords based on the rhythm of the second theme before gradually returning to a simpler use of the chords and bass line from the opening.

As filled with a sense of hopelessness that O Come, O Come, Emmanuel is, this prelude is brimming with unbridled joy; from the thunderous opening to the bell-ringing ending. With influences ranging from Handel to Mannheim Steamroller, I wanted to write something that expresses the full glory of this hymn. While the hymn itself has 7 verses, I only chose to use four of them including the fifth verse referencing Sinners…doomed for guilt to endless pains where I moved to a minor key before coming back for the final verse and a return to the musical material of the opening.

Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.950924). This simple, yet beautiful lullaby to the sleeping Christ-child has long been a favorite of mine. The piece begins with a gentle rocking figure in the left hand while the right hand represents the twinkling of the stars in the night sky. In the first verse, a simple statement of the melody begins over the figure established in the left hand. By the second verse, both hands have introduced another voice to the harmony. There are two popular musical settings of the lyrics, and in the third verse I tried to combine the rhythmic and melodic elements of both. The prelude closes with an air of wonder and reverence as the Child drifts back to sleep while the star shines overhead.

Numbers 3, 11, 21 and 24 were written during the COVID-19 pandemic while all the rest were pre-pandemic compositions.

Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.1073968). The most Impressionistic of Opus 3, the cathedral in this instance is the forest rather than the sunken one from Debussy’s prelude. The canopy of the trees is the vaulted ceiling and the trunks serve as the columns. As one walks down the colonnade, the spaces between the trees serve as windows onto the magnificence of nature. From a musical standpoint, the thick, rich chords of the right hand create a feeling of majesty and awe broken by the melismatic figures of the wind through the boughs. Once again, it is of great importance to balance the chords to bring forth the melody.

As a vocal major and accompanist during my undergraduate and graduate years, I became familiar with a great number of lieder by Franz Schubert. It's far too difficult to pick a favorite, but this song was one of the first pieces I learned to sing. As common in so many of his songs, Heidenröslein has a very simple, folk-like melody, and the accompaniment almost has the feel of a pianist vamping at the keyboard. My arrangement is very much inspired by the music of George Winston. The right hand has a somewhat ostinato feel in the opening. When the melody enters, the right hand figure is moved into the left hand while the melody floats above as though carried on a summer breeze. The second verse takes on a more music box feel as it makes frequent pauses in the music, but the melody is always present in the right hand, even when it is surrounded by a steady stream of eighth notes.The work closes with a return of the opening material and fragments of the melody tossed back and forth like the falling petals of the rose on the heath.

While I was still in high school, the moment I first heard Holst’s suite,“The Planets,†it quickly became one of my favorite works of Classical music. “Mars, the Bringer of War,†the first movement of the suite, was easily my favorite followed by “Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity.†The nobility of the slow theme, which this arrangement is based on, resonated deep within my soul. I first became familiar with this tune in high school choir when we performed “Sing We Now of Christmas†for a holiday concert. I did not know that it had originated as a French carol from the late 15th/early16th century and like many of my favorite carols, it is set in a minor key. I had forgotten all about it until a friend suggested arranging it for this collection. As I began working on the piece, I was torn between staying true to the feel of the original and this growing sense I had to write something more dramatic and more inspired by one of my favorite composers, Ralph Vaughn Williams. I chose a much slower tempo than the French carol and as a result it has more depth and a sense of gravitas, reflecting the mystery of the birth of Christ. At the end of the first verse, I transition to the parallel major key and the music takes on a more lighthearted and almost dance-like character as the stable is visited by shepherds and kings alike to see for themselves the sleeping child and enjoy the sense of wonder and amazement at such a scene. The music then moves back to the opening and the original key as the kings offer their gifts to the babe and prepare to return home. Even though it is in a minor key, there is an overpowering grandeur in this prelude reflecting the events to come in His short life on this earth, but even more the importance to all that his sacrifice would bring. There is a brief coda that returns to the major key with the promise of hope offered by one so small.

I must admit that I was far more familiar with the 1956 setting of this poem as sung by Bing Crosby to music by Johnny Marks than I was to the one found in many hymnals. It was on several of the Christmas albums that would be played on the phonograph in our house during the holiday season. However, I chose to arrange the carol setting for this collection as it resonated more deeply with me and seemed to better capture the essence of the poem by Longfellow. He wrote it during the Civil War, on Christmas Day of 1863, and several of the verses make reference to the war. While I did not set any of the Civil War verses, there is an almost martial quality to the opening music and one can almost hear the brass choir ringing out in the first verse. With each subsequent verse, the rhythm of the right hand becomes quicker, moving from half notes to quarter note triplets to eighth notes and finally to eighth note triplets in the final verse. For the most part, the left hand maintains the steady beat of quarter notes, with the exception of the final verse where it begins to move in eighth notes setting up a two-against-three pattern between the hands. It is the most jubilant of the verses and feels like an explosion of sound as the bells ring out across all the land proclaiming God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The Wrong shall fail, The Right prevail, With peace on earth, good-will to men..

The melody floats along as though on a peaceful river of eighth-notes supplied by the left hand. In the first verse, the melody is played in octaves with the occasional addition of an alto voice at the ends of phrases, which seems to comment upon the music..to reinforce what was just said. In the second verse, there is the addition of harmony in the right hand in either sixths or thirds. Soon the texture grows thicker as the chords become three-part and finally arriving at five-part chords as the piece reaches its climax. There is a dream-like quality to this arrangement which is never disturbed throughout. The music feels like a gentle balm for the weary soul… a soul which is accosted by trials every day, but that can take solace in the promise of the babe born this night.

The influence of Erik Satie can be heard in this prelude as it brings to mind his famous “Gymnopedie.†The unusual meter of 7/8 gives the music a feeling of the vastness of time and space as it almost never seems to end, but continuously spins out from measure to measure. Judicious use of the pedal is necessary to maintain the crystal clarity of the music while still allowing the harmonies to transport the listener to a realm of unending serenity and calm.

The first movement was the inspiration for this prelude, (though that may not be entirely clear to the listener). The music has a somewhat sinister feel to it, as though it is the background score to a murder mystery. An old mansion filled with suspects…and time is running out.

Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.1077067). A sense of foreboding fills the air as this piece begins. There is a darkness on the horizon and it can mean only one thing: the storm approaches. The simple chords of the intro present a feeling of calm that belies the impending torrent. The music takes a deep breath and then…it begins. In the left hand, a figure reminiscent of Chopin’s “Revolutionary†Etude begins (though not nearly as quick). The rains start to fall and the winds begin to blow as the storm builds in intensity. Measure by measure the music grows in strength until the climax is reached and the gales begin to subside with the last crashes of thunder. For all its fury, the storm is over. The clouds begin to recede across the horizon and in the end, a single ray of sunlight breaks through the gloom.

I was living in Green Bay following my graduate studies and I was teaching private voice lessons at Appleton West High School with my brother and his wife at the request of the choral director, Kevin Meidl. Kevin was also the director of the Appleton Boychoir and one year he asked me to sing the solo part of this carol for a recording they were making. My arrangement of this carol is rather straightforward with very little altering of the basic rhythms found in the original tune. However, the melody in the first verse is found among triplet figures and therefore one must be sure to bring out the important notes. There is a dance-like quality to the music, reminiscent of a gigue from the Baroque period. Following a brief reprise of the opening material the melody shifts to the left hand, starting out as a single note and soon joined in harmony. To me, it represents the page and the king from the story as they walk through the cold, winter night to bring food and fuel to the peasant living near the mountain. The melody then moves back to the right hand, but is now played in half notes indicating the difficult terrain and the snow they must traverse causing them to move more slowly. The left hand rumbles below as a reminder of the wind blowing and the snow swirling about them. The page, fears he cannot go on, but the king tells him to walk in his footsteps and all will be well. Soon, monarch and servant are moving swiftly to their destination. The music slowly fades as they pass into the mountain’s shadow only to grow once again as they arrive at the poor man’s home. The final chords ring out as the door is thrown open and they step inside to share what they have brought.

There is a definite pastoral atmosphere to this arrangement, giving it the feeling of one of his Nocturnes. The gently flowing river of the left hand in the first section provides the support for the melody as it weaves its way in and out of the eighth notes of the right hand. The second verse takes a more chordal approach to the music with the tune being played in octaves while the off-beat rhythms provide a french horn-like accompaniment. Suddenly, there is a burst of energy as the chorus rings out in left hand octaves while the right hand gives the impression of a sudden gust of wind. There is a return to the chordal section and ultimately to the flowing river of the opening before a final statement of the melody (though somewhat altered) over a pedal point brings the prelude to a very quiet and peaceful close.

Based on a traditional French melody, this arrangement of Angels We Have Heard on High runs the gamut from a George Winston-inspired opening to a closing more akin to the grand works of Handel. The driving rhythm of the left hand sets the foundation for the bell-like right hand of the intro. The pulsating energy continues as the melody rings out over the unceasing flow of eighth notes. A sense of unbridled joy permeates the music culminating in a grand finale that is fitting for the coronation of a King! I was drawn to arrange this hymn by memories of singing the wonderful Gloria section at Christmas concerts throughout my school years. There is something almost infectious about the cascade of notes, each melisma feeling like an explosion of happiness that cannot be contained. It is this quality that I tried to capture in my arrangement.

Once again the influence of George Winston and Mannheim Steamroller can be heard as this prelude begins with a burst of joy and energy that does not subside, but only grows with each verse. The changing meters make this piece a challenge to play and requires a strong technique to handle some of the scale passages. This arrangement is a far cry from the original music of Mendelssohn, but the lyrics inspired me to create something full of vibrancy and passion to match the glorious news that the angels came to deliver! The first verse establishes the 5/4 meter heard throughout the prelude and is filled with the pealing of church bells in the right hand as they send forth the melody in octaves! Meanwhile, the left hand continues the broken chord pattern established in the opening. In the next verse, the left hand is now rising and falling, while the right is still playing the melody in octaves. Only now it is filling the spaces with eighth notes to match the left hand…essentially combining the two hands of the previous verse. For the final verse, the left hand takes on the orchestral role of brass and percussion with thunderous chords punctuating the rhythm of the melody in the right hand. There are moments of fireworks as the hands break free of the 5/4 meter for some wonderful, albeit brief, scales which increase the growing excitement. The piece concludes with a return of the rhythmic material from the opening as the hands work their way down the piano in arpeggiated fashion only to race back up the keyboard for a final flourish before a resounding Amen: Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Glory to the new-born King!

The travels of the three wise men as they followed a star to see the newborn King was the inspiration for this arrangement. It starts with the right hand representing the twinkling of the stars in the vastness of the heavens, while the left hand provides the feeling of winds blowing across the desert sands as the magi set out on their journey. Soon the melody is heard in the right hand, though in a more stately rhythm than the traditional, more pastoral original. The left hand continues its sweeping motion unabated and drives the piece ever onward as the wise men draw ever nearer to their destination. The minor mood of the song is replaced in the chorus as the star of wonder shines down upon them, filling their souls with hope. Eventually they arrive at the stable and offer their gifts to the babe lying in a manger: gold, frankincense and myrrh. It is the last of these gifts which foreshadow the death of Christ and his burial in the stone-cold tomb. After they have spent some time praising their new-found king, the three wise men return to their homeland as the music follows them back across the desert sands to their homes in the East.
