I improvised and sketched out this nocturne on Tuesday, April 7, 2020, after looking at the large full moon on the night of the Pink Supermoon 2020. Since this piece has a jazz flair, and I have been a fan of Dave Brubeck's 25 nocturnes, I also wrote this piece as an homage to him. I also have a collection of 7 other nocturnes that are available as a set or as individual pieces.

Chopin composed his best-known Nocturne in Eâ™ major, Op. 9, No. 2 when he was around twenty years old. This well-known nocturne is in rounded binary form (A, A, B, A, B, A) with coda, C. It is 34 measures long and written in 12 8 meter, having a similar structure to a waltz. The A and B sections become increasingly ornamented with each recurrence. The penultimate bar utilizes considerable rhythmic freedom, indicated by the instruction, senza tempo (without tempo). The nocturne opens with a legato melody, mostly played piano (quietly), containing graceful upward leaps which becomes increasingly wide as the line unfolds. This melody is heard again three times during the piece. With each repetition, it is varied by ever more elaborate decorative tones and trills. The nocturne also includes a subordinate melody, which is played with rubato. A sonorous foundation for the melodic line is provided by the widely spaced notes in the accompaniment, connected by the damper pedal. The waltz-like accompaniment gently emphasizes the 12 8 meter, 12 beats to the measure subdivided into four groups of 3 beats each.

Simplified VersionThis arrangement I have placed at Intermediate although may be top end. The youtube link has the full score for you to assess.It is a beautiful melody- so typical of Grieg. The arrangement is for the pianist who doesn't feel quite ready for the full version. I have arranged it in 3/4 time instead of 9/8 for ease of reading. Also some of the inside parts have been modified and split between the hands avoiding large stretches. I have tried to keep the spirit of the original in this arrangement.It is very useful for a variety of events including, recitals and concerts, weddings and incidental music when required. 7 pages long 4.30 mins.

While out on a winter’s walk one evening, I was thinking through the lovely It Came upon the Midnight Clear, and without any warning, Chopin’s exquisite Nocturne in E-flat, Op. 9, No. 2 kind of crept in and curled itself around the Midnight melody and made itself at home. The result is this gentle mashup of these two beauties in a piano solo.Most of us do not have tons of time to practice, but the original Chopin left hand chords and leaps are daunting, so I have modified the bass notes without losing the composer’s harmonic intentions. Also the original time signature of 12/16 has been changed to 6/8, a more familiar friend and is compatible with It Came upon the Midnight Clear. There are some suggested fingerings in a few places. Use pedal at your trained ear’s discretion.I played this piece as a Prelude for our church Christmas Eve Candlelight Service, and the mood that it set was heavenly.
