'4 piano miniatueres' were written in August 2012 (with them I 'took a rest' from the writting of 'Bossa Copa' for sax quartet and orchestra). They are inspired by the Bulgarian folklore music. The 1st one is a left hand toccata ostinato in 2/2 (and a lot of tonal centers) and in the same time the right hand quotes the Bulgarian folk song from Pirin region 'Katerino mome, sevda golema' ('Kathrin, my great love') in 8/8 (3+2+3). The 2nd one in 11/8 (3+2+2+2+2) is improvisation-like that quotes the folk song 'Uchi me, nayko, karay me' ('Teach me, Mom...'). The 3rd one is written in the spirit of the measureless folk songs (the other very popular thing in Bulgarian music together with the odd meters) but it's entirely atonal. The 4th is a rachenitsa (the most popular folk dance) in rondo structure. The theme is a melody supported by many side dominant 7-chords and the melodies in the episodes are supported by a countermelodies in different registers.

Published by Burke & Bagley (A0.787299). Composed in 2014, SEABISCUIT'S RUN is an homage to the champion racehorse. This one-minute piece is dedicated to Mexican pianist Joel Juan Qui, who will give the premiere performance in 2015. A small horse, Seabiscuit had an inauspicious start to his racing career, but became an unlikely champion and a symbol of hope to many Americans during the Great Depression. He didn't run the leave-'em-in-the-dust races of other famous horses, but liked to intimidate and tease his opponents by looking them in the eye and then finally leaving them behind. He never quit, in spite of his small size, odd gait, and serious injury. Seabiscuit's career culminated in the 1938 Match of the Century against War Admiral at Pimlico Race Course. War Admiral was the favorite but Seabiscuit won by four lengths, and Seabiscuit was named American Horse of the Year for 1938. According to some, he got more press in 1938 than Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill combined. A 2015 Piano Contest feature.

I spent about one month working on it and I considered it my masterpiece at the time. It's been many years since then and I had to do a lot of polishing to make it publishable, but I am still rather proud of this one. As the title suggests, the melody goes through many transformations with changes in meter and key signatures. It's much like a theme and variation with lots of transitions. There are some bits where the music takes on my normal dark quality, but this one is actually more of a positive and upbeat song, even a little jazzy at times. I don't think it's too difficult to play except for a climactic part where the left hand has a lot of movement at the same time as the right hand melody. Also the multiple key changes and odd meter changes might be confusing. I was trying to be different and original as I usually am. I hope you enjoy.

Born in Czudec near Rzeszów, he studied at the Music Society in Kraków, then he studied piano with Kazimierz Hofmann, and finally in 1873 he went to Munich, where he studied at the conservatory of piano theory and playing. Then he devoted himself to pedagogical work, initially in the company oo. Jesuits in Tarnopol, then at the Music Society in Rzeszów. He spent the last few years in Przemyśl, where, together with his wife, Wanda née Wostrowska, also a pianist, he founded a music school and rendered significant services to the improvement of the city's musical culture. From 1901 he was the director of the Tow. In Przemyśl. Cyrbes' compositional legacy is small, it includes twenty-odd opuses, including the mass (in the manuscript), songs for one voice, piano and choral pieces. Particularly popular were choral compositions, often performed by Echo from Lviv under the direction of Jan Gall, a friend of Cyrbes and a colleague from the time of his studies in Munich, under the great theorist Józef Rheinberg. Gall highly appreciated Cyrbes' choral pieces, as evidenced in a letter to SA Krzyżanowski, in which he strongly recommends them for publication.

As a creative challenge, I thought to myself: What would happen if I took the Prelude, and put it ALL in the left hand. And what would happen if some furious diva decided to play a melody over the top of this prelude? This piece is the result: a fantastic, Chopinesque remix of JS Bach. I stayed true to the Prelude wherever possible, sticking to the glorious harmonies that were explored by his genius. The melody came out stormy–and since I live in Canada, it became the perfect title. Winter Storm.The piece is challenging as a solo recital piece, but well-worth learning if you are a fan of Bach and Chopin. The left hand never stops–and has some challenging leaps and booming bass notes. The right hand is challenged with odd rhythmic subdivisions, 3’s against 2’s being one of my favourites, as well as a challenging 11 against 4 flurry of notes. Further challenges include a RH double note pattern at the end, trills, and ornaments. Published by Samuel Wellman (A0.882143). This piece is an exact mirror of Chopin's 'Minute' Waltz. The left hand now plays what the right hand originally had, and vice versa. It's not simply an inversion but the same relationship of black and white keys so that the 'feel' of the left hand duplicates the right hand original. One may inspect Vincent Persichetti's 'Seven Mirror Etudes' to see how this works; in his pieces the LH is a mirror of the RH. But in mine there are two mirrors, so to speak: each hand is a mirror of what the opposite hand has in the Chopin original. The result is somewhat odd, since major triads become minor and tonal relationships are altered.

The nine miniature pieces in this set dabble in the wide palate of tonal colors available on the piano, using compositional techniques from aleatoric to modal. The titles are more evocative than descriptive. If you find a hidden meaning in any part of this composition, enjoy it, but I didn’t put one there. For Kay - Because the Lady doesn’t necessarily like Milk Tray! Back in the late 50’s when I was a kid, my elder brother and I used to spend numerous hours playing in the woods and as a team we’d catch anything that was catchable, such as lizards, newts, frogs, shrews, slow worms etc. One time our cousins Angela and Kay came to stay and just for a laugh, we acquired an empty chocolate box, added a few lizards, and gave it to Kay (who was 5 at the time). Clearly Kay didn’t appreciate how difficult it was to catch the lizards and reckons she’s been traumatised for the last 60 odd years. I keep telling her that I was only an innocent accomplice and my brother was the instigator.Anyway, this piece is for Kay with love to help ease the trauma.This piece requires at least a 76 note (6 octaves) keyboard. I would rate this as MODERATELY DIFFICULT, but very satisfying.

When I saw the Rachel, Jack, and Ashley Too episode of Black Mirror, I recognized the melody of the oddly upbeat pop song Ashley O was singing but couldn't quite place it because unconsciously I knew something was really off, and then slowly it dawned on me that it was a NIN cover, and I flipped out with utter joy that someone had just done something to me that I'm constantly trying to do to them. Every time the song played throughout the episode, I couldn't stop laughing, not just at the lyrics, but especially at a certain trite & upbeat sounding bassline and all of the different musical elements that completely changed the feel of the original. So of course I needed to write my own arrangement of that arrangement. I hope you enjoy it. This composition was written for a student who enjoyed the quirky tonality and the challenge of playing the left hand was in C Position but the right hand in F Postion. The song is in the key of C Major and includes both sharp and flat accidentals. There are two brief fingering changes in the right hand but the most challenging technique is simultaneous legato (RH) and staccato (LH) playing. Also included are oddly placed accents and short appoggiaturas. The song is 29 measures in length. .
