Octaves with major thirds attached to the outer ranges take mirrored, topographically identical structures, and explore the lowest and highest registers at the conclusion. Approx. running time is 3 mins 30 secs. More etudes to follow, til the set of 25 is complete. Once the single interval pieces have been posted, the combination pieces begin. All the possible groups of two have been utilized. Then the groups of three, and finally, the final etude uses all the intervallic elements in turn in one piece. MBB.

As suggested in the title, each piece is based on a single compositional fragment or sketch that had otherwise remained incomplete and dormant. Fragment II initially builds up the notes of a major chord with added augmented fourth, in a brief introduction. The main section of the piece features the simple device of alternating added note harmonies, rocking back and forth like a pendulum. These include an upper pedal on the note A in each chord, landing on A minor around the mid-point. Meanwhile, a slightly unsettling off-beat lower pedal ostinato rings on throughout. Towards the end, the opening chords are alluded to, before settling on reiteration of a resolution on A major. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for almost all standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. Fragment VI is the final piece in this six-movement piano cycle (though Fragments may be performed separately). The work's main middle section bears some similarity in tone and mood to the first piece in the cycle, Fragment I. Fragment VI is slightly more technically challenging than the previous movements. It has an arch form whereby the two, slow, initial introductory sections return in reverse order as the conclusion. The extended centrepiece section cumulatively builds in texture, dynamics, and tension, and is a set of modal variations over a 4-bar descending ground bass. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for almost all standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. As suggested in the title, each piece is based on a single compositional fragment or sketch that had otherwise remained incomplete and dormant. Fragment I uses a simple minor key chorale that features a descending bass line. This poignant chord sequence was later used and developed in the composer's 2020 anthem God So Loved the World (also available via Sheet Music Plus). In Fragment I this idea is repeated with textural variation, ascending in pitch, before a dramatic silence. The piece concludes with a further statement of the sequence, now finally with an added melody. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for almost all standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. It starts with the trumpets at the end of the world, the sense of quiet expectation. Wind across a field. It drops off into the silence of outer space. The initial theme presented against that impersonal void, knowing that He's out there, somewhere. Some of this is very difficult for me to describe because this is really about the Triune God, the great creative power, the mover in harmony and cooperation with Himself. The second verse is more grand, the love, the sense of story. And then it gets very, very big, in the way that I AM is always in capitals. Who WAS and IS and evermore shall BE! And in my mind that word BE is light, and just explodes against the blackness into a billion sparkles. And we shrink down to the microcosm for a moment, the wonders of His creative power in the tiny worlds, and it fades to the black of space again. Holy, Holy, Holy, though the darkness hide Thee. The Light that we can't see that would outshine all the stars. More beauty, and then we tumble down the waterfall of Living Water from the Throne of God...in Heaven. The golden palaces and the wonder, the unearthliness, the richness of the life. For a moment it's more simple and I'm reminded of an old hymn being sung in a rustic church. Then a vision of the Cosmic Christ from Revelation giving a benediction, and we're plunged into the chorus of Heaven, the new song of the 144,000. (this part sounds really good on an acoustic piano because the sound physically builds on itself) And it ends as it began...

The first movement, in G major, is based on Psalm 34:8, blessed is the one who takes refuge in him, which commands the disciple to trust the Lord and see that the Lord is good rather than fear him. A dialogue between the disciple and the Lord takes place in each section of the piece, as the motives are based on call and response. The second movement, in B major, is based on the text from the doxology, Praise God, from whom all blessings flow, which is represented through the use of the pedal and melodic content, as well as the peaceful mood. The third movement, in C major, is based on Philippians 4:4, Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say, Rejoice! A recurring theme in the form of a minuet, a dance in 3, conveys the feeling of joy in the Lord, and to have complete faith in him.This piece is dedicated to my church family at Severna Park United Methodist Church, who have helped me find myself once again through love and Christ. They have blessed me, so it is only natural that Jesus allows me to give my blessings unto him and unto you. The piece explores various permutations of the opening four bar subject, passed between the hands throughout. Meanwhile, a second part is created by using the initial idea in canon, or by introducing a secondary scalic subject. The work is in a ternary structure, with the opening section returning in a shortened form, and with parts swapped over, as the final part. Meanwhile, the middle section explores the initial subject in augmentation, with a varied secondary part. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for almost all standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. Years later, I composed a musical work for piano and orchestra - a creative and classic concerto, capturing the Great Wall's grandeur and majestic attraction.My first visit to the Great Wall of China was in 1983 while engaged as a pianist onboard a cruise ship that sailed the waters of Asia. My first impression of seeing the Great Wall and the scenic landscape surrounding it, was one of awe and amazement.At that time, I did not realize the lasting effect this memorable attraction would have on me. Friends shouldn't just hang out in fair weather, so here is All Weather Friends, a gentle swing waltz ideal for established intermediate players at about the Grade 4-5 standard (ABRSM).The melody and accompaniment is based upon a classic jazz waltz rhythm, so to get into the feel of this piece, you may find it useful to first practice clapping this rhythm:Remember that the quaver eighth notes are swung.The trick with this piece is to let the melody sing out above the jazz waltz accompaniment, so keep an ear on the melody at all times.In bar 21, the semiquaver 16th notes can be played a little faster than written, which will create more of a 'turn' ornament. Have a listen to the performance recording clip (above) at about halfway through to get the idea.This jazz waltz piano sheet music provides excellent practice for working on phrasing and sustain pedal technique. Occasionally, you may find a couple of hand position changes that risk disrupting the flow of the melodic phrase. In these instances, try a touch of sustain pedal to smooth out the transition. An example of this can be found in bar 31.After the repeated opening melody, the middle section moves into the key of G minor, featuring a rising arpeggio-based accompaniment with sustain pedal. Friends shouldn't just hang out in fair weather, so here is All Weather Friends, a gentle swing waltz ideal for established intermediate players at about the Grade 4-5 standard (ABRSM).The melody and accompaniment is based upon a classic jazz waltz rhythm, so to get into the feel of this piece, you may find it useful to first practice clapping this rhythm:Remember that the quaver eighth notes are swung.The trick with this piece is to let the melody sing out above the jazz waltz accompaniment, so keep an ear on the melody at all times.In bar 21, the semiquaver 16th notes can be played a little faster than written, which will create more of a 'turn' ornament. Have a listen to the performance recording clip (above) at about halfway through to get the idea.This jazz waltz piano sheet music provides excellent practice for working on phrasing and sustain pedal technique. Occasionally, you may find a couple of hand position changes that risk disrupting the flow of the melodic phrase. In these instances, try a touch of sustain pedal to smooth out the transition. The half-step can be either inside or outside the 4th, and both are used, singly and mix-and-match fashion, as single notes and as chords. The fingerings are SUPER-simple. 4 2 1 or 4 3 1, usually together, but mixed as well. There are mirrored chords throughout as well. The composition uses black keys in bunches, or white keys all on their own. Keyboard topography is a large determining factor in ALL these Etudes, as the object was to create both musical moods and technical challenges, using as much hand-to-hand topographical mirroring as could be found, within a given interval or interval set. This piece has a rolling movement throughout, and even the dissonances sparkle! Approx. running time is 3 mins. Pedaling is marked throughout. MBB.
