Famously used in the 1967 film Elvira Madigan, hence the nickname, the Elvira Madigan concerto, Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 was completed soon after his 20th in 1785. There are 5 different arrangements for solo piano, each getting progressively harder and trying not to compromise on sound where possible: Level 1: Just over a minute long, this is the easiest version. Both hands are very simple and are very close together, making it easier to see what all the fingers are doing at the same time. No jumps greater than a fifth and no large chords, making it perfect for smaller hands. Level 2: Two version provided: the first just over a minute long; the second the complete length of the movement, minus the orchestra introduction. Again, the melody has been simplified, though harder than level 1, with an increased coverage of the piano. The accompaniment is either static chords (now triads as standard) or broken arpeggios. It now has jumps in the right hand of just over an octave, with the left hand moving relatively little between chords/arpeggios. Level 3: This version has an optional cut, otherwise is the complete second movement, minus the orchestral introduction. Similar to level 2, only one hand tends to be changing pitches/rhythms at any one time, but the right hand is now almost the same as Mozart’s original (with some ornamentation removed or written out in full). The left hand now has the familiar broken-chord pattern (see opening bars) but in simple rather than compound time. On the whole, the left hand moves relatively little between chords, although there are now some larger jumps when the right hand is static. Level 4: Like level 3, but with the broken chord in compound time throughout. Some of the orchestral accompaniment has been integrated into the music, though simplified. Level 5: The hardest version, more difficult than the original solo piano part. Still no orchestral introduction. Includes more of the orchestral accompaniment than level 4. This, in essence, is a piano transcription of the full orchestration for piano and orchestral. Marie-Agnès NATAF was born on March 2, 1952 at Issy-les-Moulineaux, in the suburbs of Paris, Before deciding to devote herself completely to music, she began by studying both mathematics and musics at the same time. She had a varied base in her musical training, which allowed her to understand the teaching of her main teacher Narcis BONET. She studied the piano, chamber music, musical analysis, harmony and also to a lesser degree the flute, counterpoint and conducting. As a pianist, she received a First Prize in Piano and in Chamber Music at the Orsay Conservatory, the Gold Medla at the National Music School of Cahcan and the Artist Diploma at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris – in the class of Germaine MOUNIER. For composition, she studied with Narcis BONET (who later invited her to the Conservatoire Américain of Fontainebleau as accompanist and teacher of French Diction), Yoshihisa TAÃRA, and Edith CANAT de CHIZY. Having taught for a time at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris, she is currently professor of piano at the Conservatoire Erik Satie of Villebon-sur-Yvette, Marie-Agnès Nataf has a double career of performer and composer. In both areas, she is especially attracted to chamber music, for the rich musical and human exchanges that this type of music permits. She has written her works Trois mélodies sur des poèmes de Marie-Isabelle SOLANO, Révolte sans paroles and Elan brisé for her colleagues the mezzo-soprano Nicole PARAMYTHIOTTI and the flutiste Isabelle MARCHAL with whom he has given concerts for many years. As a performer, she has premiered works by composers such as Gian-Paolo CHITI, Gloria COATES, Jean-Marie MACHADO, Yoshifumi UMEZAWA, Miao Wen WANG, without speaking of her own compositions. She also tries to discover high quality works of music which are rarely performed, especially works by women composers such as Thérèse BRENET, Dianne GOOLKASIAN-RAHBEE, Ruth LOMON. The Drumfire Was Incessant, and Continued All Night With Unabated Fury is a solo piano piece, inspired by Newton Wanliss’s harrowing account of the Battle of Pozieres in his 1929 war biography The History of the 14th Battalion, A.I.F. The Battle of Pozieres ran between July and August 1916, as part of the First World War’s Somme Offensive. The composition focuses on the days leading up to August 9th, 1916, when my great-great uncle Private Leslie Robins, an infantryman in the 14th Battalion, was shot and wounded.In the early stages of writing the piece, whilst conducting preliminary research into the Battle of Pozieres, I was struck by the disparity between the British High Command’s notion of formulating a ‘plan’ for the battle, and the actuality of what occurred once soldiers ‘went over the top’ into no-man’s land. This dichotomous concept – exerting control over an inherently fluid and dynamic situation – I found to be most intriguing. It segued neatly into my aesthetic explorations of the role of improvisation (a dynamic process) within a larger notated context (a controlled environment). I decided that this dichotomy would play a fundamental role within the piece.Australian pianist Zubin Kanga commissioned The Drumfire… for his 2012 Spectrum concert series. The piece was given its world premiere on August 11th 2012 at the Melbourne Recital Centre, and was also performed at the Independent Theatre in Sydney on August 16th 2012.

Dora PejaÄević, born in Budapest in 1885 and died in Munich in 1923, was a composer of the Croatian noble family.This Ouverture en ré mineur pour grand orchestre is one of her fascinating collection of works that allow for deep expression through the use of harmony that sometimes pushes the limits, as is typical around the beginning of the 20th century.This piano reduction was commissioned by the Japan Croatia Music Society and was completed in August 2021, and premiered in Tokyo on 18 September by the great pianist Mr. Tomohiro Adachi.Arranger Yuki Hasegawa, biography Arranger, pianist, conductor and producer. She completed the department of piano at the Kunitachi College of Music, and the departments of chamber music, eÌcriture musicale and orchestration at the Conservatoire SupeÌrieur de Paris-CNR. She also studied eÌcriture musicale at the CNSM-Lyon. She studied under Profs. Alain Louvier, Bernard de Crépy and other representative professors in France in terms of composition and arrangement. She later completed the conducting biennio department at the Milano Civica Scuola di Musica Claudio Abbado, and in recent years has been the guest conductor at the Japan Croatia Music Society. She travels to various parts of Croatia to research music, visits music research institutes and composers, and strives for understanding. As a chamber musician, she has also worked on numerous experimental harmony works of the same era as Dora PejacÌŒevicÌ, and has also recorded on CD. She is a member of the Irish Music Rights Organisation. Her works can be licensed for performance by representative organisations in each country. There are many moments in our lives but none more significant than birth and death.Whilst birth is openly celebrated in our society, death however is treated as dark and sombre.I was moved to compose this piece Laid to Rest as I saw death as a final resting place and the funeral, a celebration of that person’s life as he is sent off on a journey of peace. Hence, this piece takes on a lighter, hopeful yet reflective feel compared to other pieces of heavier, melancholic notes.I was deeply honoured when it was first played / performed at Singapore’s late founding father Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew’s funeral. I had to control my tears as I was conducting the band and was so grateful for being able to honour him with my composition.During this pandemic, there are many healthcare heroes on the frontline working tirelessly to protect all of us. Some have even sacrificed their lives. I would like to dedicate this to these heroes. May they and their loved ones find comfort in this piece.
