Aphelion is one of my few pieces that's meant to tell a story and it's not incredibly specific, but here is the story of Aphelion. However, the definition of aphelion first is incredibly important.aphelion (noun):the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet at which it is furthest from the sun.And it's very important to know the definition of its absolute antonym: perihelion.perihelion (noun):the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet at which it is closest to the sun.These are terms used in astronomy to describe a celestial object's extreme distance from the sun. I'm using this to describe a relationship between two people. The type of relationship does not matter, it is simply just a relationship. However, you perceive it: platonic, romantic, etc.That is up to your interpretation.Aphelion follows the story of two people, with the start of the piece not actually being the aphelion, but however the perihelion, starting in D Major.It highlights their relationship as perfect, well-rounded, and flawless relationship. Some may call it a honeymoon era/phase or just the possible closest two people could be, i.e the perihelion.Then the two slowly drift away, with a shift to B Minor and D Minor. Issues, flaws, and problems that weren't there before begin to appear. These issues are quickly shoved under the rug, and the two pretend that they are nonexistent. The piece shifts back to D major incredibly quickly, however, there is a slight sense of uneasiness within the piece that I intended to create as it goes through this relationship that is clearly rocky, but it isn't being addressed because neither are choosing to communicate these issues.Then, the mysterious part hits very quickly, this is the aphelion. following a D Minor chord progression, then a shift into D minor itself. This part is where the relationship issues reach a boiling point, neither can stand the other and any attempt to resolve the issues is essentially useless. They stay in a toxic relationship. However, it's labeled as mysterious because the future is an absolute mystery to the two. They don't know what will happen. Then, one confronts the other, they choose to genuinely communicate.It's where the shift back to D Major occurs. They finally come to an understanding. At this point, they can choose to stay in the relationship, and work on the issues, or come to an understanding that it might not work from here, because a relationship takes two. There is a sense of peace, they are finally at peace with one another and their situation. Life can continue moving on, and the piece ends on an A Major chord. This is because A Major can be interpreted as one finally becoming content.That is the story that I intended to tell by writing Aphelion.

Capriccio on the Departure of a Beloved Brother, BWV 992 is an early keyboard work by Johann Sebastian Bach, composed in 1704 when Bach was still a teenager. It is considered one of his few programmatic compositions, telling a specific story through music. The piece was likely written to bid farewell to Bach’s brother, Johann Jacob, who was leaving to serve as an oboist in the military.Structure and Programmatic Elements:The Capriccio is divided into six short movements, each with a descriptive title, narrating the emotional journey of the departure:Arioso: Adagio – A friend tries to dissuade him from leavingA gentle, expressive movement representing a friend’s attempt to persuade Johann Jacob to stay.Andante – They picture the dangers that may befall himThis section evokes the imagined dangers and perils of travel, characterized by ominous, foreboding musical gestures.Adagissimo – A lament of the friendsA sorrowful, slow lament, capturing the grief and sadness of those bidding farewell to the brother.Aria di Postiglione – The postillion’s horn is heardThis movement imitates the sound of a post horn, as if signaling the brother’s imminent departure by coach, a common mode of travel in that period.Fuga all’imitazione della cornetta di postiglioneA lively fugue that continues the imitation of the post horn, showcasing Bach’s contrapuntal skills even at this young age.Aria – The friends’ farewellThe final movement brings the capriccio to a touching close as the friends say their last goodbye.Style and Significance:Musical Innovation: While Bach is typically known for abstract works, this early piece is unique for its use of vivid musical storytelling. Each movement serves a narrative function, making it one of the earliest examples of program music, where the music is designed to evoke specific images or emotions outside of purely musical ideas.Youthful Playfulness: The Capriccio reveals the young Bach’s ability to blend humor, drama, and emotion. It also shows his developing mastery of counterpoint, which would later define his mature works.Historical Context: Bach composed this piece at the beginning of his career, before his major positions in Weimar, Köthen, or Leipzig, making it an important insight into his early stylistic development.This capriccio is an expressive and inventive work that balances emotional depth with technical brilliance. It stands out as a unique, personal piece within Bach’s extensive oeuvre, reflecting both a sense of farewell and a joyful exploration of musical ideas.

The Foggy Dew is the third single to be released from Brad Jacobsen's upcoming solo piano album, Celtic Piano (the release date for the album is October 20, 2023). Although the original song goes back much farther, The Foggy Dew became very popular during the Irish Rebellion in 1916 with completely different lyrics (the original was a love song). Brad said he initially chose the song for its title, assuming it was about grieving or loss, which, coincidentally, this newer version is, mourning the lives lost in the Rebellion. It is still one of the most beloved songs in traditional Irish music, and there are at least 150 different recordings of the song (151 with Brad's arrangement!). Although Brad keeps his solo piano arrangement simple, it is very expressive, conveying loss, mourning, sadness and even elements of strength and pride. Very highly recommended! ~ Kathy Parsons, MainlyPiano.com.

From Chopin to Joplin, her influences were varied and many, and she also enjoyed creating her own arrangements of popular songs. While earning a business degree at the University of Colorado Boulder, Christine was inspired by George Winston's new age genre of solo piano, yet the piano remained only a hobby for many years. In 1990, my mother requested a cassette tape of my piano music for her birthday, so I went to a local recording studio. It was then that I rediscovered my passion for playing the piano, and I realized my gift to her was really her gift to me. Sadly, her mother passed away just months later. Christine immersed herself into the piano to comfort her grief and voice her emotions, releasing heartfelt compositions that captured listeners.
