Before I arrived at mission age I had to make a lot of decisions about whether or not I wanted to go on a mission. There were so many voices calling out to me. The voices promised me scholarships and fame. The voices questioned my logic. The voices tried to make me doubt my motives and character. The voices ridiculed me and my desires to do good. The voices told me that they loved me, but wouldn't wait for me if I went on a mission. All of those voices were demeaning of me if I went on a mission. They also promised me joy, but only if I decided not to go on a mission. I ultimately decided to go on a mission. By going on a mission I was put in a situation where I could testify of God's gospel truths. Those people hearing the truths had the opportunity to pray to God to find out for themselves if what they had been taught was true. Those people that talked to God in prayer joined the church. Why? Because God answered their prayers. Some of those new members went on missions to other lands converting through the spirit of the Holy Ghost others, who in turn went on missions to other lands. It probably comes as a surprise to many to know that Beethoven wrote variations on the current British national anthem, as well as on a jingoistic tune sung every year at the BBC Proms. But indeed he did. In 1803 he was approached by George Thomson, a civil servant living in Edinburgh who was passionate about collecting folk songs from his own country. He wanted Beethoven to compose six sonatas on Scottish melodies-a project which never materialized, but which started a business relationship that lasted until 1820. For Thomson, Beethoven completed some 150 arrangements of Scottish, Welsh and Irish folk songs (including Auld lang syne). Towards the end of 1803, he sent him these two sets of variations for piano, saying they weren’t too difficult and hoping they would have much success.Concerning the 7 Variations on ‘God save the King’, WoO78, Beethoven made the comment that he wanted to ‘show the English what a blessing they have’ with that tune. We don’t really know who wrote it, but it became very popular in 1745 when it started being sung at Drury Lane and Covent Garden to celebrate the putting-down of the Jacobite rising. It travelled over to the Continent where in 1795 it became the royal anthem of Prussia (‘Heil dir im Siegerkranz’).It makes a great theme for variations, and Beethoven has a lot of fun with it. If ever you needed proof of humour in his music, here it is. After some counterpoint in variation 1, he gives us some nimble fingerwork to deal with before an expressive minor-mode variation that can also be played a bit tongue-in-cheek. He changes metre for variation 6, a perky march, and stays in that time signature for variation 7. A lot of the difficulty of this piece depends on the tempo you choose at this point. The coda is inspired: a brief cadenza-like descent of F major broken chords leads us into a solemn return of the theme, but with some piquant and mischievous harmonies. The final allegro brings the work to a bravura conclusion.

My goal is to create something that sounds beautiful as a standalone piece of music and, most importantly, that it also makes pianistic sense. Primary IV Class. I wanted to see what would happen if she had to do a left hand accompaniment with less (than usual) blocked or broken chords. To compromise, I gave it a lullaby feel, which worked amazingly well in a recital setting! The main theme recap was especially difficult for her, but she persevered and got it down. It's a beautiful and sweet rendition. Pedal and fingering suggestions are included.

Dance of the Lanna is a portrayal of a festival in Northern Thailand; Lanna refers to the people there, and the festival celebrates rebirth of their heritage. The festival is comprised of several dances depicting events of nature; this piece portrays two of the dances: Dance of the Silk Weaver and Water is Life. The piece opens with portrayal of expressive Thai flute solo, proceeding to portrayal of Thai string orchestra and the PiNai oboe, leading to fast-paced announcement of dancers, moving into the themes of each dance. The style is slow, dramatic, unique movements, appearance of simplistic (but difficult) dances, using piano techniques unique to the style of Thai music. The piece was written for a piano student who wanted to portray music of his country on the piano. Choreographer Marius Petipa wanted the Sugar Plum Fairy's music to sound like drops of water shooting from a fountain. Tchaikovsky found the ideal instrument to do this job in Paris in 1891. It was then that he came across the recently invented celesta. This instrument looked like a piano. It sounded like bells. Tchaikovsky wrote, [The celesta is] midway between a tiny piano and a Glockenspiel, with a divinely wonderful sound. He wanted to use the celesta in The Nutcracker. He asked his publisher to buy one. He wanted to keep the purchase a secret. He did not want other Russian composers to get wind of it and ... use it for unusual effects before me. Tchaikovsky introduced the celesta to Russian music lovers on 19 March 1892 when the Nutcracker Suite was performed for the Russian Musical Society in St. Petersburg. The instrument is forever identified with the Sugar Plum Fairy. It is heard in other parts of Act 2 of The Nutcracker besides the Sugar Plum Fairy's dance.[3] The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is one of the ballet's best known musical numbers. She likes improvising and composing with ostinato patterns and minimalism-type stuff, so I included repeating broken 3rds throughout the piece. She also asked for the hustle and bustle of downtown, so I tried to express that through honking horns and other sudden accented sounds caused by delivery trucks, subway, police whistles, etc. I wrote it in 5/4 because she wanted more of a challenge than in previous pieces and I mixed in a little Mixolydian and Aeolian into the melody. Enjoy!

These Variations were originally composed for a eurhythmist, Noor Elffers in Holland, hence the alternative titles in Dutch, who wanted a composition for euthythmy based on the planets and their qualities for school students to move to using the choreography methods based on the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner. However the Variations have been performed as a piano solo to great acclaim and do not have to be used exclusively for dance and movement classes. The technical level is aimed at intermediate and higher level players and the performance time c.5-6 mins. The virtuosity of the player in the faster variations determining the speed.
