Solo Piano Arrangement By Thomas GuntherSanta Claus Is Coming To Town is another one of my favorite Christmas songs. For some reason I love playing it in a bluesy style, with some jazz voicings. The bridge is more in stride piano style.About The ArrangementThe arrangement includes different stylistic elements found in more traditional popular piano music. It definitely has a bluesy vibe, but also shows elements of jazz and stride piano.When it comes to the form I extended it by adding an intro that comes back in-between sections in form of an interlude. There is also an outro. About The Sheet MusicThe sheet music is basically a transcription of my recording. It contains jazz chord symbols and plentiful of articulations as well as some dynamic markings. My Arranging WorkflowI have different approaches for creating solo piano arrangements of songs. The one I took here is as follows. First I come up with different ideas, try them out, and after a while settle on those I like best. Once I practiced and internalized those ideas I press record and hope for the best. Before the final version is done, I record myself many times over. This gives me the opportunity to improve upon each version until I have one that I feel comfortable with.Recommendations For Learning The SongI recommend that you first listen to my performance while reading along in the sheet music. This way you get a better understanding about the phrasing and the rhythmic feel.You may want to spend a little time just vamping a few bars to get into the groove. When that feels good move on to different sections.The bridge is different in feel because it is based on stride piano rather than blues. Stride piano features big jumps in the left hand and big intervals between the outer notes (up to a 10th). Should you have difficulty in playing those big intervals (smaller hands will make this hard) you may roll the notes and use the sustain pedal.Is This Arrangement For You?This solo piano arrangement is for every pianist who would like to try playing Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town in a more bluesy-jazzy style. Dependent on what your specialty is musically speaking, you made benefit from it in different ways. Here are some examples.Classical PianistsIf you are a classical pianist who rarely listens to jazz and blues music, this arrangement might be a great way to dip your feed into more contemporary genres and styles like blues and jazz. This said, it might be quite challenging. Not from a technical point of view, but from a musical point of view. For example, swung eighth notes and accents and phrasing in blues and jazz are somewhat contrary to classical music. It's gonna be a great learning experience for sure!Jazz PianistsShould you be a jazz musician or blues musician, you may not necessarily want to play the arrangement as written note for note. Instead, you might just fall in love with some of my ideas and create your own arrangement based on those.This goes especially for the solo section. You can play my solo or use it as inspiration for your own solo. Of course experiences blues and jazz musicians will prefer to make up their own solo.I truly hope you have fun playing this arrangement! Yes.

Martyn Johnson #900580. Published by Martyn Johnson (A0.1311573). This is a Blues/Boogie Woogie Piano piece. It's a fun piece with loads of blues riffs running into each other. I wrote it as a sort of etude to collate a lot of blues licks and get them all under my fingers but it is still quite a catchy composition with strong melodic content.There is a key change somewhere in the middle from C to Db which perhaps complicates it a little but I think it gives it a real lift and stops any blues fatigue setting in!It's a fun piece which I hope you enjoy learning and playing.NB. Please note the sheet music is a piano solo and doesn't include notation for the other instruments, bass, drums etc that feature in my YouTube video. It was written as a piano solo, however, and sounds great when played as such.

A Week in November… and what a week it was! It was the week of the US Presidential Election 2020. As I write these words, the absurdist tantrums of the Trump-Pence campaign versus the reasoned compassion of team Biden-Harris continues even well after the results have been called in the Democrats’ favour. There will not be the usual respectful concession speech and transition of power. I worry every day about how these next few months will be so very difficult, maybe even dangerous, for my American friends. Those convoys of flag waving Trumpists gleefully, openly, encouraged by their ‘leader’, attempting to block the democratic process was horrifying to witness. Was America on the brink of civil war? It still doesn’t seem far fetched to think that as I sit in my studio on the other side of the world, feeling helpless. The only thing I felt that I could do for my friends over there was to offer them a way to feel safe and loved in the moment, a bit of musical mindfulness. It was in this spirit that I wrote the second movement of this work, subtitled A Pocket Full of Calm. My excellent pianist friends Erica Sipes (USA) and Sandra Mogensen (Canada) adopted my little tune, recorded it on their social media to share said moment in the moment as it were. I hope it helped. I mean, if I can bring to even just one person some sense of calm solidarity, I’m happy with that. The fifth movement in the set, Victorious, resolute, but gracious, was a stream-of-consciousness creative response to the Biden Harris victory and the way they handled it so eloquently, so humbly, how they gave the world a sense of optimism once more. For a long while, I’d felt that I probably wouldn’t be welcome in America. As a mixed race, queer woman I was the antithesis of everything they valued. Using a combination of exercises from Music Composition Toolbox (Barbeler/Blom/Hindson) and Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies I’ve been able to find my creativity again. This year, I am continuing to arrange songs that I consider to be important. In order to fit my criteria for arranging, I look for pieces that have stood the test of time, are uplifting, and can be used in many different situations. This one is a favourite of my Mom's so it went on my "To Do list" quite a while ago.
I decided to dedicate it to my Mom and Dad, for giving into my pleadings for music lessons and supporting me all these years.
The arrangement is written for an advanced player because the left hand can be quite challenging. There are many giant leaps and arpeggios all over the piano, including some challenging chord changes and full chords in the right hand. The piece starts in E flat major, but transitions to a F major finish. Each repetition of the melody is changed slightly--there is a challenging section near the end which brings out the melody in a thunderous full arrangement which is really fun to play. Rather than bringing everything to a crashing end though, I moved the melody into a sweet treble that signals a quiet, peaceful ending.

I first wrote a five-part vocal to be sung by the group Five By Design (of which I was a member) back in the late 1990s or early 2000s. Unfortunately, it never found its way in to our repertoire. It sat on my computer for quite a few years before I revised it to be sung as a trio with my brother, Kurt, and his wife, Lorie. I had written a vocal arrangement of the carol for us to sing at some Christmas concerts and a few years later, when putting this album together, I returned to the first chart and adapted it for piano solo. The meter of the song moves back and forth between 3/4 and 2/4 and conveys the joy and hopefulness of the opening lyrics: “He is born, the Divine Child, Play the oboe, resound the bagpipes. He is born, the Divine Child, Let us all sing of his arrival.†It is this combination of instruments that I tried to emulate in the introduction, with the bagpipes in the left hand and the oboes in the right. When the tune proper begins, there is a definite rhythmic vitality that is maintained throughout the prelude as it celebrates the long-awaited birth of Jesus as foretold by the prophets over 4,000 years ago. From start to finish, the influence of both George Winston and Mannheim Steamroller can be heard in the music.

As years come and go, one increasingly recalls memories of earlier times. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. For this series, I have mostly elected to use the older texts as that is the way they were first written and the way I first learned them. (*See below for more comment on the texts in this set.) There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. I shudder to think of the day when a penitential phrase such as Hear thou my prayer, O Lord is rendered as Hey, God-dude, listen up - I'm talkin' atcha! I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. A caveat: I have no delusions, and I offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy to other church musicians. The general concept of each medley is to present the hymn, often in its original chorale form, and then vary its harmony or texture. The hymns in this set are Children of the Heavenly Father, Day by Day, Thy Holy Wings, and Beautiful Savior. This collection of arrangements is also available for SATB voices and piano or piano solo.*A note on the texts in this set: Having grown up in a Swedish Lutheran church, the grandson of Swedish/Norwegian immigrants, and currently being choir director of another Swedish Lutheran church, these hymns have a special place for me. This medley of hymns was originally arranged for my church choir with the first verse of each in Swedish. Being under copyright, permission was obtained to use the more familiar English translations of the first three songs for local use. For this edition, I have opted to create my own texts for the first and third hymns while the second hymn is a translation in public domain. I have also provided a verse in English in lieu of the Swedish for those Nordically challenged. The fourth hymn is not a Swedish melody but for obvious reasons is a mainstay of the Lutheran hymnal. Like the other hymns, the first verse is in Swedish while the other traditional verses are also public domain.

This album follows the simple story of A Squirrel Named Whiskers. Whiskers is a curious but cautious little squirrel that lives in the woods and enjoys exploring new areas of the woods from time to time when he finishes collecting food for the day. This story follows Whiskers as he ventures out into an unknown part of the woods and happens to stumble across an old abandoned house which is surrounded by trees and bushes. There is no one to be seen or heard here and Whiskers can’t help but explore inside.I began writing this album with the track “And Carefully Crept Inside.” but I actually wasn’t planning on writing a full album at that point. I go into more detail in the individual track’s program note about it but it was the spark that led me to commit to writing a full album. I began composing other tracks for the music box to be part of the album and then I had an idea to make the titles into a story, but what would they be about? The music box is an enchanting and mysterious little instrument and is often associated with magic, fairies, and the forest which is what led me to decide to write the story about a Squirrel.I took some time to write out a short story and then created 10 titles that would fit the story. I continued to write the remaining tracks of the album now using the titles as inspiration to write the music which made it easy to create a certain mood and style. Writing this album was a great exercise in writing music that has a story behind it which something I always try to do when composing. I believe that every piece of music has a story behind it intentionally or unintentionally. I plan to continue to infuse a story in the music I write as it gives it much more meaning than a piece of music being written without a story in mind. I hope you enjoy listening to or practicing these pieces and have fun following along with whiskers on his journey into the unknown.

A return to the intro follows, with a more decorated melody in the upper part of the piano. The chorus is introduced with strong, four-note chords and a more chord-like structure to the left hand. The bridge introduces some new interesting rhythms and arpeggios in both hands and ends with a descending cross hand arpeggio. This is the second album that I have released and it is another soft piano album. Ever since I published my first album ‘Sunday’ I have been wanting to write another one because I enjoyed writing the first one so much. I wanted to write even better pieces than the first one as well as a couple more pieces too. When thinking about a theme for this album, I decided to go for the season of summer and write music that reminds me of summer such as the warm breeze, the fragrance of the trees and flowers, and the sparkle of the sun on the water.In a lot of the pieces in this album, I explored the line between the ambient and melodic world with some pieces featuring a strong melody while others cycle through a chord progression in a certain pattern. This is something that I like to explore in a lot of my music as I think a melody is a great way to make a piece of music memorable but I also find that less melodically driven pieces still have their place in telling a story or setting a mood.So, if you are listening to this album or learning it, I hope that you find each piece enjoyable and that there is one that sticks out to you as your favourite. My intention is for you to listen to them while you drive, study, work, or have a rest or do anything else to make those moments a little more enjoyable and special.
