M.H. DuncanMartha Hill Duncan’s passion for music started early, inspired by her mother, who sang and played the piano by ear. Martha was a member of the first graduating class of the Houston High School for Performing and Visual Arts and earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Composition from the University of Texas at Austin.Her piano works have been inspired, at least in part, by her long-time career as a piano teacher and some of these pieces, as well as her art songs, appear in educational publications and syllabi. Piano collection titles include The Sunken Garden, Isla Vista Suite, Precipitations, Angular Measures, Limestone Etchings, Rainy Days and Cottage Days. Since moving from the United States to Canada, many of her compositions have been inspired by Canadian landscapes and texts. In January 2014, her youth opera, Searching the Painted Sky, with poet/librettist Janet Windeler Ryan, was premiered at the National Opera Association Convention in New York City. She was named a finalist for the 2020 Louis Applebaum Award.A former piano examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music, she is also a founding member of Red Leaf Pianoworks, a self-publishing composers’ collective. Originally from Houston, Texas, Martha and her husband Martin have lived in Kingston, Ontario since 1988. She also conducts the women’s choir She Sings! and has two grown children and two granddaughters. As a child, his biggest question was, “What would happen if...?†His first experiments involved creating foul-smelling concoctions with his chemistry set in hisparents’ basement. He survived and went on to complete an Honours Physics degree at McGill University, followed by graduate degrees in astronomy at the Universities of Toronto and Texas at Austin. Post-doctoral research was performed at Cornell University, the University of Toronto and the University of California, Santa Cruz. In 1988, he became a professor of astronomy and physics at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.In his academic career he has co-authored over 120 scientific papers, which have been cited over 8,000 times. He has presented numerous invited talks at international scientific conferences and has been the guest speaker at many public lectures. His research has ranged from the study of black holes to simulations of the formation and orbital evolution of planets and comets. He is best known for the prediction of the existence of a disk of small icy bodies beyond Neptune, which he and his colleagues called the Kuiper Belt. It came to me at 3am yesterday and I went into my studio to notate it. It's a dreamy, soothing and sometimes soaring piece that reminded me of the octopus from the amazing documentary My Octopus Teacher. Part 1 is possibly more beginner intermediate, and I think some of the parts can be played as individual solos. I've included a link to the youtube demo on the score with an above hands view and a light up keyboard so that students can follow the score and listen.My husband and children loved this piece when they heard it, so I'm excited to have it published for others to learn and play. Part 3 was an idea from a piece I improvized in the Tottenham Court tube station a few years ago (yes, there was a piano in the tube station, and there should be a piano in every tube station as far as I'm concerned :) The theme I played that day never left me and it seemed to fit here. I wrote an expanded version of part 3 called Flight in D major that I hope to include on my website singplaystudios.com and here in a few weeks, so if you like part 3, I hope you'll check that piece out too. I plan to include this work in my 20 Beautiful Piano Solos book 3 (please find the first two books and many other repertoire and ear training books on Amazon). Thank you for considering learning this piece. I was chatting to my mom in South Africa yesterday, and she requested some new music for her upcoming birthday(preferably me singing another aria), but I woke up with this in my head early this morning and so I got to work. It reminded me a little of all the Chopin waltzes I played many moons ago, and it made me sad that he died at the young age of 39, so I decided to call it The Birthday Waltz. Chopin's music really shaped the way I hear melody, and I love his body of work. And my mom has always been my biggest fan, coach and champion, so I hope she likes this piece, and I guess Ill go and record an aria for her now!!! ps I think this piece will be a great preparation for students who are eager to learn some Chopin Waltzes. It sounds harder than it is and I think it's fun to play (and even my husband loved hearing it all day). I hope you enjoy it too.

Kathleen's notes: Again, preferring silence to constant motion. I’ll confess that I was not inclined to record this piece. My husband really wanted it included on The Rebirth of Light, but I resisted because I had first heard it sung by a soprano with super-warbly vibrato. I thought the song was sort of tacky, although I did recognize that the tackiness came from the singing and not from the music itself. When I explained all this to him, he pointed out that any arrangement I created would never be “tacky†and that it wouldn’t have warbly vibrato either! I promised to play with it and just hear what I could create. I started with a sort of American Methodist hymnal 4–part chordal arrangement. And then the rolled chords appeared and away I went! Lyrical, spacious, spiritual. Suitable for use in church.

It took almost 60 years before Peggy learned that the town of Les Ventes had been honoring her husband after he heroically crashed his plane while avoiding the village. I had first heard of Peggy's and Billie's story on 26th Aug 2019 and decided to dedicate my next piece to them. At the end of July 2016, I was in my hometown Canberra for a job interview. I was sick as a dog with laryngitis for the interview and audition. Imagine me trying to take a choir rehearsal with no voice? It was never going to happen for me and I was feeling pretty sorry for myself. Halfway back to Sydney on the bus, I get a text from my dear friend Emma. I don’t remember the exact words, but the gist of it was No easy way to say this. We lost Jeff today. Jeff being Emma’s beloved husband and all round awesome human. It was truly devastating. I didn’t know what to do. I felt terribly guilty for thinking of myself and my employment failure all day instead of thinking of Emma and Jeff, even though that was completely irrational. Didn’t want to call because I knew she’d have enough stuff to deal with. Couldn’t turn around cos Public Transport. Had lost the ability to formulate sentences because in that situation, there are no words. So I fell back into the place where I express most clearly. Music. And into my native habitat, the piano. Passacaglia came flowing out very quickly. I hardly stopped to edit. Normally I would try to plan a composition a bit, so that it’s structurally sound. I didn’t do that but somehow it just emerged fully formed. I sent it to Emma who asked if I could come and perform it at the memorial service. But I couldn’t make it to the memorial. And you know what the saddest thing is? I can’t even now remember why, which means it can’t have actually been that important. Instead I created an electronic file of the piece, with more sounds than just piano. I hope it worked ok. Emma told me later that after the funeral when she suddenly found herself alone, she just played it over and over again on repeat. So I guess it did its job, but now it’s ready to make its own way in the world in its original version for solo piano. I hope it can bring some solace to others in grief

In addition to her contributions to the RMM Track for MTNA's Pedagogy Saturday, she also presented group piano and RMM sessions throughout the U.S. As well as serving as a teacher trainer, she has written extensive articles on both group piano and RMM teaching. It is usually played by the instruments called Gamelan. Bali is an island in Indonesia rich with cultural traditions that are very much rooted in myths and legends. After understanding deeper of the legend of “Kebo Iwaâ€, I was so drawn to the character and the plot that I decided to tell the story in my piano composition. I was able to use different kinds of musical techniques to express different moods. One of them is to apply the Pentatonic ‘Balinese Pelog’ Scale in B flat Major, which represents the majority of the Gamelan sound that is usually transcribed into Western notations. Below is the synopsis the “L’amore di Kebo Iwaâ€. A Once upon a time, in Bali, there was a husband and a wife who dearly wanted to have a baby. They prayed to God for a very long time. Finally, God heard their prayers and blessed them with a baby boy. But there was something special about this baby boy: he was very big- a giant baby. They named him Kebo Iwa. Kebo Iwa grew up with a good heart and became a gentleman. He was a kind hearted giant; he protected the village dearly. One day, the King of Majapahit from Java wanted to conquer Bali. He had heard about Kebo Iwa and knew that his army would lose to Kebo Iwa. B Therefore, the King of Majapahit tricked Kebo Iwa. He invited Kebo Iwa to Java island, promising that he would arrange a wedding for Kebo Iwa to marry his daughter, the beautiful Majapahit princess. Kebo Iwa was so in love with the princess, so he happily travelled to Java island. C After he arrived in Java, the King of Majapahit asked a favour from Kebo Iwa to dig a well, with the reason for it being the dry season. Kebo Iwa then sincerely gave some help and started digging a big, giant well. D However, the King Majapahit never meant to deliver his promise to Kebo Iwa. Instead, the King Majapahit commanded the troops to cover the well with mud and boulders. But when Kebo Iwa realized, it was too late. He was already in the position that was far too deep below - at the bottom of the well. Kebo Iwa then cried loudly and sadly with a broken heart until his last breath. He was buried alive. Soon after that, the Majapahit troops attacked and conquered Bali. E At last, the well was covered and grew a hill of flowers. To this day, the Bali villagers still remember Kebo Iwa as their hero. To honor him, they erected a giant statue of Kebo Iwa in Gianyar, Bali, as a memorial.

This wistfully melancholy piano solo is inspired by Penelope from Homer's Odyssey. Penelope is the portrait of desperate longing, as she waits for her husband Odysseus to return for twenty years. This piece is the perfect musical companion for those times you long for the return of a loved one.This piece is challenging with a portion in E-flat minor (six flats), many heavy chords, and arpeggios (I am still brushing it up myself!). I would say, however, that if one can handle Debussy's Claire de Lune, he can handle this piece. I suggest using the sustain pedal to your advantage so as to be able to take different portions of the arpeggios with different hands. Despite the rhythmic and technical challenges, this entire piece ought to be expressive from start to finish. A rather cathartic piece in nature, this is the piece to let your emotions guide.Hopefully, there will be a YouTube channel with recordings of this piece and all my future pieces. Hoewever, Faye would have never wanted anyone to sit around mourning and being sad, so it picks up pace as it lifts her soul to heaven, pain free, reunited with her husband and family members, and settling into peace and joy.
