This is a solo piano arrangement of Almost May, best suited for an early intermediate player. Almost May - Theme and VariationsBackstory: Years ago I wrote a simple piano piece for my students. As instrumental music can fully exist outside the confines of words, it can be difficult to find the right title for something that is pure sound and possibility. I took inspiration from the time of year in which I had composed it and stamped it, “Almost Mayâ€. Like springtime in the Northern Hemisphere, “Almost May†unfolds slowly and majestically, with ever-evolving layers for the senses to discover. What to listen for: ThemeThe main theme is first presented by the piano with minimal fanfare. This part was written to be easy enough for a child, which despite being sparing of notes, delivers rich harmonic content. Every note has been carefully curated for the optimal combination of accessibility and depth. Weaving chromatically into distantly-related keys, the melody takes small steps into contrasting musical spaces. In a wordless procession, the storyline plays out, as if the theme discovers that someone very different lives next door, and they slowly become inseparable. The piano is accompanied by an airy touch of brushes against a snare drum, like the pitter patter of soft feline steps. In the low frequency range, the upright bass supports and deepens the tonal palette with its earthy underpinnings. What to listen for: Variation I The unmistakable string section arrives like a breath of warm air. Lush, warm and reassuring like sunshine on your cheeks, the string parts begin with long tones. This broadness and stability will evolve into more layers of complexity throughout the section. While the role of the string section is background accompaniment, it undergoes textural changes which allow for some layers to briefly rise to the forefront as melody. Careful listening to the string parts will reveal an oceanic churning, a motion from background to foreground with expansions and contractions along the way. Floating overtop this density is the improvised piano solo, with ascending gestures that progress in detail and density. Each instrument enters a general unfolding and growth period in the first variation. The bass and drums include more fills than before, as the ensemble tends gradually toward more grandeur. What to listen for: Variation II The final variation opens with a decadent treatment of the melody. What was initially expressed by a soloist as a childlike plea is reimagined as a two-part conversation between the piano and lead viola. The obbligato voiced in the viola is a derivation of the melody that holds the space between phrases so the listener's attention is passed seamlessly between the piano and viola part. This dialogue features commentary on the original melody in the form of ornamentation and taking surprising pathways to expected destinations. The rhythm section (bass and drums) takes more liberties in creating a verdant soundscape as the ensemble rises to a final climax.

For instruction it can serve to introduce the student to light staccato bowing or up and down slurred staccato bowing. For performance it can serve as an amusing interlude. (3) HYMNSONG. (SO. ) In the form of an etude, this piece consists of a simple theme with numerous variations, somewhat like Paganini’s famous Caprice 24. Of intermediate difficulty, it offers double stops, tremolo, and various bowings. For performance it can be played as is or it can easily be shortened by omission of one or more passages. (4) MOTHER’S STORIES. (SO. ) Varying from sweet to dramatic, this simple composition offers an opportunity for emotional interpretation. Intermediate from that standpoint, It is otherwise basically easy. A nice recital piece. About the arrangement This is pianist/arranger Thomas Gunther's beautiful and highly accurate piano solo arrangement of the 2023 Barbie Movie features Billie Eilish's song WHAT I WAS MADE FOR.  It includes even Billie's quiet humming passages.This solo piano version can be played all by itself, or with Billie's recording of the song.It is easy enough to learn for pianists that have no amazing techniqual skills, but can be challanging in different ways, as explained below. From the Arranger Thomas Gunther  The most challenging task when writing this solo piano arrangement of What I Was Made For was to notate Billie's rhythm accurately. Her melodic rhythm is very important as it supports the flow of the lyrics perfectly. Notating a singer's rhythm can unfortunately never be 100% perfect (notation is by definition quantized), but I think I got very close. An other challenge was to get the accompaniment sound like the original without stepping on the melody notes. Looking at my final version I think it is as good as it gets for a piano adaption of this highly emotional song.I really hope all you Billie Eilish fans out there will enjoy playing this arrangement! How difficult is it As mentioned earlier, the song looks simple, but to play it well there is a lot of things the pianist has to take care of. The most challenging aspect is to sustain some notes by either using clever fingering or employing the sustain pedal. Also, dynamics are really important, especially when ballancing the accompaniment against the melody. Fingering I included fingering numbers to give the pianist a starting point. But fingering is a highly subjective affaire. Every pianist should feel free to adapt her/his own fingering as see fit. Sustain pedal usage The sustain pedal usage is very important in this arrangement (I included sustain pedal markings for this very reason). For one, it helps sustaining some notes that can't be held otherwise, and of course to make the sound fuller (more cinematic). It is important to use the pedal to create a sense of space (distance). After all, the original recording uses a lot of reverb to achieve that. Chord Symbols I did not include pop chord symbols because the harmony to the the song is very simple and based around 4 diatonic chords. It would just cludder up the score. This book is a recording of the printed piano accompaniment book in this series. Besides accompanying solo or duet instruments, these recordings may also be used for group singing. There is a short introduction, and enough repeats of the verses in case you would like to play or sing them all! While these recordings contain multiple verses, the print version (also available on Sheet Music Plus) contains only one verse with no introduction. All hymns are in a good vocal range except Christ the Lord is Risen Today which is in F to accommodate a more accessible playing range. The only hymn not included in this recording (that occurs in the print book) is Great is Thy Faithfulness, since I only have print publication rights to this piece. This is one large file, containing all 34 accompaniments. For this reason, I have notated the cue point, i.e. the time in the recording when each hymn occurs so they can be located more easily within this one-hour and 10-minute recording. For instance, the second hymn would be found at the 2-minute and 17-second time point. Some specialists point out that its origin would be Sephardic, although the first known versions date back to the 19th century. Collected by Spanish poet Federico GarcÃa-Lorca in 1931, still today it can be heard sung as part of the folk tradition of Spain.The song tells us about a woman (Tarara) who walks through the fields dancing, with add clothing and somewhat strange behavior, most likely crazy. Children would follow her and laugh loudly while playing and dancing.This piano piece presents the theme accompanied by a simple harmonization, followed by 5 variations, each of which uses the theme as material. The first variation (Tarara and the children) watches the scene from outside, while variations 2 to 5 describe the character of La Tarara from inside her own point of view.
