It has been described as the feeling one has on a cold winters’ day when the sun almost shines for a brief moment, then is gone forever into the frozen darkness of night, never to return. Originally written with orchestral accompaniment as the second movement of the Piano Concerto #2 in C minor, this arrangement for solo piano was made at the request of Joanna Ezrin, pianist and pedagogue, and has been recognized at the MTAC annual convention in 2007.

While out on a winter’s walk one evening, I was thinking through the lovely It Came upon the Midnight Clear, and without any warning, Chopin’s exquisite Nocturne in E-flat, Op. 9, No. 2 kind of crept in and curled itself around the Midnight melody and made itself at home. The result is this gentle mashup of these two beauties in a piano solo.Most of us do not have tons of time to practice, but the original Chopin left hand chords and leaps are daunting, so I have modified the bass notes without losing the composer’s harmonic intentions. Also the original time signature of 12/16 has been changed to 6/8, a more familiar friend and is compatible with It Came upon the Midnight Clear. There are some suggested fingerings in a few places. Use pedal at your trained ear’s discretion.I played this piece as a Prelude for our church Christmas Eve Candlelight Service, and the mood that it set was heavenly. Enjoy, and I hope you or your advancing students enjoy playing this at your next holiday event!

There are many versions of this work which was published 21 years after the death of the composer with minor differences as well as many interpretations by various pianists. I had endeavoured to compare them and come up with what are most commonly accepted, (with options included in some instances) and what sounds most musical to me. For the running notes that can’t be divided equally easily, I had grouped them in such a way that is comparatively easier to read and execute without compromising the musical effect. I hope this is helpful to Chopin lovers who wish to study this beautiful piece.

The Autumn Breeze starts with the first 3 notes of the famous Autumn Leaves, to be played with extreme rubato depicting breeze. Winter Nocturne is Chopin-like in nature (one hopes). Spring Dance alludes to many spring themes from Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Vivaldi, with much distortion to the meter, rhythm and harmonies, and a reference to a Japanese anime tune.

These three pieces are to mimic studies of voicing and touch through lyrical forms. Each specific BPM marking in the tempo is intentionally preceded with ossia rather than ca.. This is to emphasize complete tempo freedom for the performer. The BPM markings are simply given as an initial baseline, showing the general tempo that the composer would perform these pieces at. Neither of the three pieces finish with a triad. Instead, they end with some form of extended harmony, whether it be through a chord or arpeggio. Neither the specific meaning of the piece nor the method to play the piece is included in the piece descriptions following this sentence, as those choices are specific to the performer. Nocturne in A Major (Op. 1 No. 1) uses both contemporary and traditional harmonic concepts, with add9 chords and extended harmonies integrating further color into the piece. Much material of Winter Landscapes in E-Flat Minor (Op. 1 No. 2) is built upon a simple four-note motif (in regards to scale degrees, the motif follows the pattern of 1-7-2-1). To note - this piece never resolves to the traditional E-Flat minor triad. Lastly, Tribute in D major (Op. 1 No. 3), similar to the other two pieces (of the Op. 1 set), uses multiple forms of extended harmonies through chords and arpeggios, such as add9 and dominant thirteenth harmony.

The use of the higher piano registers in the beginning lends a unique ethereal quality. The change of meter from 3/4 to 7/8 halfway through, adds an interesting feel to the piece. Could also be played as part of a church service ( Unitarian, Methodist) The choice of Eb as the key signature gives it a lovely lullaby/nocturne mood. Various circumstances including other recording projects, a segue into the field of video production, and a cross country move from NYC to the west coast and later back again, created delays with the completion of the album. But as they say, “good things come to those who wait.”<br> One of the most interesting things about this album is the fact that the selections are traditional Christmas songs, yet some were chosen because they are less well known, or “off the beaten path” as Isadar characterizes them. This follows the pattern set by his 1999 Christmas album “In Search For The Meaning Of Christmas,” yet this new CD mines even deeper in its quest for interesting and unusual choices.<br> <br> The album begins with a track called “Good Christian Men.” Steeped in history, the song dates back to 14th century Germany and its Latin title was originally “In Dulci Jubilo” before it was translated into English in the 1800’s. Isadar’s interpretation creates a lively and festive air that makes a perfect portal to the recording. The high-spirited mood continues on the next song, “Teddy Bears Picnic,” which although not technically a Christmas song, has been interwoven by Isadar with “March Of The Toys” to tie it in with the holidays – a clever arrangement of these intriguing melodies. One of the more well-known carols on the album is “O Christmas Tree” and is sure to have listeners humming along with it’s familiar refrain.<br> <br> A track entitled “Still” is an innovative rendition of the classic “Still, Still, Still” which Isadar has put his own spin on, or as he jokingly puts it “jazzed up shamelessly.” No such liberties were taken on the classic “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” however. This song provides a showcase for Isadar’s accomplished grand piano work, featuring lush left hand arpeggios creating a strong foundation for his more delicate right hand melodies to dance upon – a powerful and moving combination. Another of the less well known, yet equally inspiring tunes is a Puerto Rican carol entitled “Song Of The Wise Men.” It has been said that: “Christmas is, above all, a children’s holiday, and many hymns are addressed to children, reminding them that the real reason for the sugarplums and Christmas trees is the celebration of the birth of the Christ Child.” This theme is well reflected in Isadar’s choice of “O Come Little Children,” based on a carol from the 1800’s.<br> <br> Among my favorite tracks on the album are the wistful strains of “Greensleeves 2012,” which Isadar interprets with elegance and grandeur and also pays ‘homage’ to Liz Story’s brilliant take on this enduring composition. This is followed by a rendition of “Masters In This Hall,” which can best be described as, well… “masterful.” The song dates back to the sixteenth century, and is another of the less well-known tunes that Isadar has chosen to feature. The album draws to a close with Isadar invoking artistic license on what is perhaps one of the most unique and liberal versions of a classic carol heard here yet. Based on “We Wish You A Merry Christmas,” Isadar characterizes it as “an uninhibited melancholy arrangement.” While I don’t know if “melancholy” is the word I would use to describe it, it does have a pensive quality and is presented more as a nocturne than usual lively carol it is known as. I really liked the interpretation and respect Isadar’s creativity and distinctive rendering of the song.<br> <br> “O Christmas” is an exceptional holiday collection, not only for Isadar’s elegant grand piano artistry, but as well for the interesting and sometimes unexpected repertoire contained within. Like ornaments on a tree, the songs adorn the album, enhancing its beauty with their diversity, individuality, and timelessness. Given the well-deserved accolades and popularity of Isadar’s distinctive piano style, I’m sure that fans will want to include “O Christmas” in their collection and make it a part of their holiday tradition.
