After early studies with his father, the organist Charles Blanchet (1833–1900), and then with his mother, Marie Schnyder, an excellent pianist, Blanchet attended the Cologne Conservatory from the age of 18, where his teachers included Gustave Jensen for harmony and counterpoint, Friedrich Wilhelm Frankel and Seiss. In 1898 he left Cologne for Berlin, and subsequently Weimar, to study with Busoni, whose influence was to prove pivotal to Blanchet's future development. At 25 he made his début with the Berlin PO, after which he appeared throughout Germany and elsewhere, including a tour of Switzerland as accompanist to the violinist Henri Gerber. In 1905 he became director of the Lausanne Conservatoire, a position he relinquished in 1908 in order to concentrate more on teaching and composition. In 1909 he was awarded first prize for his Tema con variazioni for piano op.13 in a competition in Berlin. As a pianist, Blanchet's virtuoso technique was well suited to his chosen repertory, which was based primarily on the works of Beethoven, Liszt, Brahms and especially Chopin, in addition to those of Debussy, Ravel and Louis Vierne. His playing was particularly admired for its power and control and for the variety of colour and nuance he was able to achieve through a subtle pedal technique.

As a vocal major and accompanist during my undergraduate and graduate years, I became familiar with a great number of lieder by Franz Schubert. It's far too difficult to pick a favorite, but this song was one of the first pieces I learned to sing. As common in so many of his songs, Heidenröslein has a very simple, folk-like melody, and the accompaniment almost has the feel of a pianist vamping at the keyboard. My arrangement is very much inspired by the music of George Winston. The right hand has a somewhat ostinato feel in the opening. When the melody enters, the right hand figure is moved into the left hand while the melody floats above as though carried on a summer breeze. The second verse takes on a more music box feel as it makes frequent pauses in the music, but the melody is always present in the right hand, even when it is surrounded by a steady stream of eighth notes.The work closes with a return of the opening material and fragments of the melody tossed back and forth like the falling petals of the rose on the heath.

It is the subject of stories from the Chumash, a Native American people who have lived along California’s central coast for thousands of years. When the area experiences extreme drought, sometimes the waterfall reduces to a trickle. But it is a beautiful, shady place with a magical quality, and the water always returns.For interested students or teachers, here are a few pedagogical notes:Pedal ad lib is appropriate for this piece. Unless a player has very large hands, the right hand will need to cover most of the top notes in the bass clef (the C ostinato). This can be a welcome challenge for students, as they will need to balance this with sustaining and shaping the top melody notes. Some of the middle C ostinato notes are indicated as optional, since they are already struck as melody notes during the same beat. (But they are still notated in case another instrument plays the melody.) It might feel awkward to strike some of the other C ostinato notes that are rhythmically nearby, but it can also be a good way to practice leaving that sustained melodic note ringing while striking the same note soon after with a much quieter dynamic, which requires both control and skilled use of the pedal.About the Composer:Emily Nafius is a pianist in Southern California with her musical roots in jazz. Duration – 13minsThis piece was started in 2008 as an incidental piano piece written for The Revolving Doors Soap Opera. I didn't finish the piece until 2013 when by accident I changed the midi sound to a vibraphone and proceeded to rewrite the 1st theme for vibraphone and piano. The flow of the piece could be attributed somewhat to listening to the music of Phillip Glass, Jethro Tull, Claude Debussy, and Béla Fleck at the time. I wrote parts of this composition while under the instruction of Dr. Daniel McCarthy.

Marie-Agnès NATAF was born on March 2, 1952 at Issy-les-Moulineaux, in the suburbs of Paris, Before deciding to devote herself completely to music, she began by studying both mathematics and musics at the same time. She had a varied base in her musical training, which allowed her to understand the teaching of her main teacher Narcis BONET. She studied the piano, chamber music, musical analysis, harmony and also to a lesser degree the flute, counterpoint and conducting. As a pianist, she received a First Prize in Piano and in Chamber Music at the Orsay Conservatory, the Gold Medla at the National Music School of Cahcan and the Artist Diploma at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris – in the class of Germaine MOUNIER. For composition, she studied with Narcis BONET (who later invited her to the Conservatoire Américain of Fontainebleau as accompanist and teacher of French Diction), Yoshihisa TAÃRA, and Edith CANAT de CHIZY. Having taught for a time at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris, she is currently professor of piano at the Conservatoire Erik Satie of Villebon-sur-Yvette, Marie-Agnès Nataf has a double career of performer and composer. In both areas, she is especially attracted to chamber music, for the rich musical and human exchanges that this type of music permits. She has written her works Trois mélodies sur des poèmes de Marie-Isabelle SOLANO, Révolte sans paroles and Elan brisé for her colleagues the mezzo-soprano Nicole PARAMYTHIOTTI and the flutiste Isabelle MARCHAL with whom he has given concerts for many years. As a performer, she has premiered works by composers such as Gian-Paolo CHITI, Gloria COATES, Jean-Marie MACHADO, Yoshifumi UMEZAWA, Miao Wen WANG, without speaking of her own compositions. She also tries to discover high quality works of music which are rarely performed, especially works by women composers such as Thérèse BRENET, Dianne GOOLKASIAN-RAHBEE, Ruth LOMON.
