Grieg: Morning Mood from Peer Gynt Suite for Alto Sax & Piano

Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549511 Composed by Edvard Grieg. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 17 pages. Jmsgu3 #3502277. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549511). Duration: ca. 4:00, Score: 9 pages, solo prt: 3 pages, piano part: 4 pages. Super-famous Instantly recognizable tune, not very difficult - suitable for a recital or church meditation.  Grieg Background In the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic-era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions.  Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and BedÅ™ich Smetana in Bohemia. Legacy Grieg is especially celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy), and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen. Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46) Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain. Holberg Suite and Misc. Summary It must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life. Â

His music was very popular and profitable. His publisher used some of the profits from sales of Bohm’s work to prepare the works of Johannes Brahms for publication. Output He certainly was prolific, not only with individual compositions but collections and albums of original music, such as the Bohm Album for the Pianoforte. The quality of his melodies is remarkable. They have a familiar quality similar to folk-songs. It’s no wonder they have become so popular.  His greatest masterpiece may well be the famous Calm as the Night as it is so well finished and refined. This song comes to us from a collection known simply as Lieder Op. 326. Calm as the Night (Still wie die Nacht) is listed as Number 27 in the collection. The song is scored for vocal duet and piano. The lyrics for Bohm’s Still wie die Nacht are anonymous. English: As quiet as the night And deep as the sea, Your love should be! If you love me The same as I love you, I want to be yours. As hot as steel And as firm as a rock, Your love should be!

Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1048927 Composed by An-lun Huang. 20th Century,Contemporary,Multicultural,Traditional,World. Score and part. 25 pages. DoReMi Edition #653319. Published by DoReMi Edition (A0.1048927). Chinese Rhapsody No.3 was composed e in Toronto, Canada , 1988. Huang dedicated the piece to the Canadian Saxophonist Paul Brodie who premiered it in Parry sound of Ontario in the same year. Written in Saibei Folk Style, the music is divided into 5 movements without stop. As usual, Huang didn‘t use any folk song . But the typical taste of Huang’s “Zhang Jia Kou[張家å£] accent†is pretty easy to be identified. With the concert virtuosity, the 1st movement is composed as an emotional Cadenza which expresses the profound affections to the land of Saibei. Using the same Alto Sax., the lyric 2nd movement is followed by a folk dance, the 3rd movement. Chang to a Soprano Saxophone, the 4th movement is sound like a dreamy nocturne which is interrupted by the percussions of the fiery 5th movement. The whole Rhapsody ends on a climax of the Chinese Northern west “wind and percussion “styleâ€. Brodie found more than 300 trills in this piece. Perhaps this is the key to perform the music in real Chinese style. Huang has composed 5 versions of these pieces for different ensembles: saxophone solo with piano, or strings, or winds/brasses, or Chinese traditional orchestra, or symphony orchestra. The attached mp3 was performed by the German saxophonist Jurgen Demmler with pianist Peter Grabinger in 1996. Duration: 20’.

Published by Abundant Silence (A0.1259267). SONATA FOR ALTO SAXOPHONE AND PIANO, BY ALEXANDER LIEBERMANNFOR ALTO SAXOPHONE AND PIANO, ADVANCED, 12 PAGES“The Saxophone Sonata by Alexander Liebermann is a good example for subtle storytelling in contemporary music. In a unique style that, to my ears, perfectly reflects his Paris, Berlin, and New York background, Alexander gives the performers the opportunity to unfold their full potential by letting them express a broad variety of moods and colors. Thus, the listeners are taken into an eclectic ‘short story’ – a story that is remembered for a long time.â€â”€ Johannes Ernst, Saxophonist“Alexander Liebermann’s Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano is a great new addition to the saxophone’s recital repertoire. Idiomatically written – both in terms of style and technique – it is kept in a concise rhapsodic one-movement form and offers a well-balanced and contrasting display of drama, lyricism, and virtuosity. In the best sense of the word, it is a cool piece with big city flair. It is modern, but accessible. It has hints of jazz, but explores such colors with class and refinement. It is fun to play and thrilling to listen to.â€â”€ Henning Schröder, Saxophonist.

Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549842 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Baroque,Concert,Easter,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #3554821. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549842). Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the voice is calling us) from Cantata BWV 140. Duration: ca. 4:00, Score: 6 pages, solo part 1 page, piano part: 4 pages. Program this for church services during the Easter season, or as a recital encore.Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as: Sleepers Awake Bach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire annual church calendar. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears it catches the listener at times totally off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). This transcription became No. 1 of the Six Schübler Chorales. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with the instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio. History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer. Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV.  .

Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.755072 Composed by Sy Brandon. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and part. 50 pages. Sy Brandon #3366105. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755072). Concertino was composed during 2009 at the request of Dr. Andy Wen and premiered by him at the Region 4 NASA Conference in April 2011. This piano reduction of the band parts was completed in 2011. The work is in three movements. The first movement is in an abbreviated sonata form in a spirited Vivace tempo. The first theme group consists more of motives rather than an actual theme and is characterized by interplay between the soloist and the band. The second theme group has a lyrical saxophone line over a staccato bass line. The development begins quietly with the treatment of a syncopated idea from the second theme using a trio of solo saxophone, timpani and euphonium. After further development, a variant of the first theme group returns. The recapitulation consists only of first theme group ideas before ending with a brief coda. The second and third movements are performed with out pause between them. While the first movement was created during 2009, the second and third movements are a reworking of an earlier work by the composer for alto saxophone and piano soloists with orchestra. A rubato Lento theme containing many triplets that is accompanied by lush harmony begins the second movement. It is followed by a more scale-wise melody that is treated contrapuntally. Both these ideas develop during the movement leading to a strong climax before returning to a quiet conclusion. The third movement is an Allegro, once again with a rhythmic opening idea that changes meter often, and a more lyrical second idea with scale-wise passages as counterpoint. The development of these ideas leads to a cadenza for the solo saxophonist, followed by a coda that brings the composition to a rousing conclusion.

The opening movement uses a rhythmic first theme followed by a lyrical second theme that has a jazz flavor over a walking bass line. The development section uses motives from the first theme only and the recapitulation states the themes in reverse order. The second movement alternates between a dramatic statement and a lyrical melody with lush harmony. The last movement is in a modified rondo form with a lot of rhythmic drive and chromaticism.

The saxophone part makes considerable use of quarter note triplets and tied notes. The piece has long lyrical phrases, beginning in concert G minor and ending in concert E flat. It is ideal for developing a sustained tone in the upper register. The piece is rewarding to perform and the piano part has been kept fairly straightforward throughout. It would make an excellent piece for a student recital.

There are five pages of piano accompaniment and a separate two page solo part included.Soloists at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The rhythms are straightforward, and there is plenty of scope for expressive, lyrical playing with subtle tempo changes. The piano part is suitable for an intermediate player, easy for the most part, but with two short faster passages. The overall performance time is around three minutes. There are many more top quality arrangements and compositions by David McKeown for you to browse at http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/publishers/david-mckeown/6203

Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.534135 Composed by Louis Adolphe Mayeur. Arranged by Paul Wehage. Concert,Opera,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 29 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3133401. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534135). Louis Adolphe Mayeur (1837 - 1894), was a Belgium clarinetist, saxophonist, composer and conductor who spent most of his musical career in France; Entering the French Military in 1855, he was a clarinetist in the Second Régiment of the Cuirassiers (Mounted Calvary) of the Garde Impériale. A student of Klosé at the Paris Conservatory, he received his First Prize in Clarinet in 1860. One of the inner circle of Adolphe Sax (along with fellow Belgiums Jules Demersseman and Jean-Baptiste Singelée, whose “Quartet for Saxophones“ was premièred with Mayeur playing and Demersseman conducting), Mayeur took up the saxophone and was quickly engaged as the saxophone soloist in the Opera House of Brussels, La Monnaie (the Mint). Sax commissioned a number of works from Mayeur for the saxophone, which were published by his company and used in his class at the Paris Conservatory.By 1871, Mayeur was also named Saxophone Solo with the Paris Opera, performing in opears and ballets by Halévy, Meyerbeer, Thomas, Saint-Saens, Massenet, Délibes and Paladlihe. It would appear that sometime during this period, his relations with Sax became difficult, culminating in his publications of works by Buffet-Crampon, one of Sax’s rival companies and one of the main protagonists in the series of lawsuits which led to Sax’s bankrupcy. Mayeur’s own declining health lead to his death in 1894.The Grande Fantaisie de Concert sur Rigoletto dates from 1877. The contrasting sections use motifs from arias and duets from Verdi’s opera. Florid cadenzas seperate the various sections, but those passages should be played in the manner of “bel canto†ornamentation, always lyrical and songlike. Versions are available from Musik Fabrik for Symhony Orchestra (on rental : 2222/2000/Timp/hp/strings) and for Concert Band (for sale). The score plus solo part for each of the versions is available for sale, as well as the individual parts for the concert band version
