Ali Ben Sou Alle: Grande Fantaisie Variée sur "Lucia di Lammermoor" for alto saxophone and piano

Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.533508 Composed by Ali Ben Sou Alle. Concert,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 35 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3002551. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533508). This fantasy uses motifs from Donizetti's opera. After the opening which uses motives from the Overture, the main melody of the famous Sextet is presented. The tenor aria from the last act is presented with several vrariations. Finally, motifs form the fmaous mad scene end the work in a brilliant valse. One of the most enigmatic figures in the history of the Saxophone, Ali Ben Sou Alle (Charles-Valentin Soualle) was born in 1820 in Arras, France. After receiving his first prize in Clarinet at the Paris Conservatory in 1844. he served as the director of music of The French Marine Band in Senegal, and then was named first clarinet solo at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. However, after the Revolution of 1848, Soualle was forced to flee France to England where he settled in London, playing in the Orchestra of the Queen's Theatre. His songs and piano pieces were published in London. While in London, Soualle met another exiled French musician, Louis Antoine Jullien, who conducted a light music series in London. Jullien encouraged Soualle to take up the saxophone, and after modifying the instrument by adding a single octave mechanism (the modern system used today) and keys for the lower register, Soualle became known as a virtuoso and began touring performing solo recitals (or mono-concerts, as they were called at the time) calling his modified saxophone the «turcophone ». He performed in all the European capitals and then traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Manilla, Java, through China and then to India where he finally settled in Mysore, becoming the director of the Royal Music for the Maharadjah. It was during this period that heconverted to Islam and changed his nmae to Ali ben Sou Alle (or Ali, son of Soualle). He subsequently travaled to Ile Maurice, to French Polynesia, the Cap of Natal and the Cap of Good Hope. All of these voyages were subjects of musical works which Soualle entitled Souvenirs de... and may perhaps have been part of a collection known as The Royal Album which was presented to the Prince of Wales after a royal concert. Soualle returned to Mysore in 1858 and was almost killed in the Indian Revolution. Around 1860, Soualle returned to France for health reasons and began publishing his own music. OnMarch 27 1865, he performed a command performance for the Emperor Napoleon III at the Tuileries Palace in the presence of the entire Imperial Family. After 1865, nothing more is known about him.

Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549892 Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Romantic Period,Standards,Wedding. Score and part. 23 pages. Jmsgu3 #3603399. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549892). Score: 12 pages, piano part: 6 pages, alto sax part: 4 pages. duration: ca. 5'. This is the famous wedding march from Op. 61 composed in 1842 and commonly performed as a recessional march at the end of a wedding. The piece was originally composed for orchestra then arranged for organ and performed by Mendelssohn himself.Mendelssohn: Wedding March Mendelssohn’s Wedding March is so popular that it’s difficult to imagine a wedding without it. It seems like it’s been around for eternity. In any case, it was only 150 years or so ago that the Wedding March came about. It was performed in Potsdam for the first time in 1842, as a piece of Mendelssohn’s music for the Shakespeare play A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It was first used for a wedding in 1858 Mendelssohn Background Felix Mendelssohn (1809 –1847) was, by all means, a German mastermind composer, musician and orchestra conductor of the Romantic period. Consequently, Mendelssohn composed in the usual forms of the time - symphonies, concertos, oratorios, piano music, and chamber music. To summarize, his most famous works include his music for A Midsummer Night's Dream, the Italian Symphony, the Scottish Symphony, The Hebrides Overture, his later Concerto for Violin & Orchestra, and his Octet for Strings. His most well-known piano pieces, by and large, are the Songs Without Words. Artistic Standing Musical tastes change from time to time. Moreover, just such a change occurred in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This plus rampant antisemitism brought a corresponding amount of undue criticism. Fortunately, however, his artistic inventiveness has indeed been critically re-evaluated. As a result, Mendelssohn is once again among the most prevalent composers of the Romantic era. Early Family Life Mendelssohn was, in fact, born into a prominent Jewish family. His grandfather was, notably, the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. Felix was, in fact, raised without religion. At the age of seven, he was all of a sudden baptized as a Reformed Christian. He was, moreover, a child musical prodigy. Nevertheless, his parents did not attempt to exploit his talent. Early Adulthood Mendelssohn was, in general, successful in Germany. He conducted, in particular, a revival of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, specifically with his presentation of the St Matthew Passion in 1829. Felix was truly in demand throughout Europe as a composer, conductor, and soloist. For example, he visited Britain ten times. There, he premiered, namely, many of his major works. His taste in music was. To be sure, inventive and well-crafted yet markedly conservative. This conservatism separated him by all means from more audacious musical colleagues like Liszt, Wagner, and Berlioz. Mendelssohn founded the Leipzig Conservatoire which, to clarify, became a defender of this conservative viewpoint. Mature Adulthood Schumann notably wrote that Mendelssohn was the Mozart of the nineteenth century, the most brilliant musician, the one who most clearly sees through the contradictions of the age and for the first time reconciles them. This observation points to a couple of features in particular that illustrate Mendelssohn's works and his artistic procedure. Musical Features In the first place, his musical style was fixed in his methodical mastery of the style of preceding masters. This being said, he certainly recognized and even developed early romanticism from the music of Beethoven and Weber. Secondly, it indicates that Mendelssohn sought to strengthen his inherited musical legacy rather than to exchange it with new forms and styles or replace it with exotic orchestration. Consequently, he diverged his contemporaries in the romantic period, such as Wagner, Berlioz, and Liszt. Mendelssohn revered Liszt's virtuos.

His opera fantasies are usually written for the Alto saxophone and are generally in the form of an introductory aria with cadenza, a theme with one or more variations and then a final waltz movement in rondo form with a final brillant variation. This specific work opens with motives from the Opera‘s overture, leading to Donna Anna’s 1st act aria Or sai, chi l'onore. The duet Là ci darem la mano is the subject of two variations followed by a brief interlude using Zerlina’s aria Batti, batti, o bel Masetto and then the final section is the duo Andiam’ Andiam ‘ Mio Bene between Don Giovanni and Zerlina which ends the Act I duet. The work ends with a brillant coda

Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549423 Composed by Antonin Dvorak. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #3494005. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549423). Score: 7 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano part: 3 pages. Duration: 4:25. Not difficult, but requires sensitivity & dynamic control. Suitable for recitals, church meditations, or school programs. Dvořák Background AntonÃn Dvořák (1841 –1904) was, of course, a composer from Czechoslovakia. As a matter of fact, he was among the first Bohemian composers to attain universal recognition. It is important to realize that the late Romantic Nationalist period featured composers who used traditional and folk elements to portray the character of their nation. In particular, we see this in the music of Grieg (Norway), Finland (Sibelius), and Smetana (Bohemia).  Dvořák relied markedly on rhythms and other characteristics of Moravian and Bohemian folk music. Ascent to Fame Dvořák was truly a child musical prodigy on the violin. The premiere performances of his compositions notably occurred in 1872 and 1873. He submitted his First Symphony in particular to a German competition, but it failed to win. Consequently, in 1874 he presented two more symphonies to the Austrian State Prize for Composition. Johannes Brahms was the principal of the jury and was accordingly very impressed. They forthwith awarded the prize to Dvořák in 1874, 1876, and 1877. At this point, Brahms thereupon endorsed Dvořák to the publisher Simrock. Later, the publisher commissioned Dvořák to compose the Slavonic Dances, Op. 46. These became popular overnight and, as a result, Dvořák's worldwide status was launched. International Status Dvořák visited England upon invitation nine times. On each visit, he frequently conducted performances of his own compositions. He conducted concerts of his music, especially in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Eventually, the Prague Conservatory in fact appointed Dvořák as a professor. There, to be sure, he wrote his famous Dumky Trio. United States Consequently, the National Conservatory of Music of America appointed him as director in 1892. As a result, Dvořák composed his two most famous symphonic works: the Symphony No. 9 (From the New World), which spread his name universally, and his Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, one of the most famous of all cello works. Moreover, he wrote his most celebrated American String Quartet during this time. At the same time, because of his growing recognition in Europe and his homesickness for his own country, he left to return to Bohemia in 1895. Â

The Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18, is a concerto for piano and orchestra composed by Sergei Rachmaninov between June 1900 and April 1901. No other concerto by Rachmaninoff was as popular with audiences and pianists alike as his Second Concerto ant it is one of the most often performed concertos in the repertoire. Numerous films borrow themes from the composition and it has also inspired numerous songs, like two ones recorded by Frank Sinatra and Eric Carmen's 1975 ballad All by Myself (sung also by Celine Dion). This arrangement for alto sax with piano of the marvelous and very famous second movement includes two different keys: C major and Bb major. It is suitable for classroom, repertoire and recital.

Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.533348 Composed by Ali Ben Sou Alle, Gaetano Donizetti. Arranged by Paul Wehage. Concert,Opera,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 23 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #2348199. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533348). One of the most enigmatic figures in the history of the Saxophone, Ali Ben Sou Alle (Charles-Valentin Soualle) was born in 1820 in Arras, France. After receiving his first prize in Clarinet at the Paris Conservatory in 1844. he served as the director ofmusic of The French Marine Band in Senegal, and then was named first clarinet solo at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. It was during this period that he converted to Islam and changed his nmae to Ali ben Sou Alle (or Ali, son of Soualle). On March 27 1865, he performed a command performance for the Emperor Napoleon III at the Tuileries Palace in the presence of the entire Imperial Family. After 1865, nothing more is known about him.Soualle not only performed on the clarinet, saxophone and piano, but also frequently sang during his concerts. He also wrotesongs while he was in London. His opera fantasies are usually written for the Alto saxophone. This particular fantasy usesthemes from the Third and fourth act sung by the hero et heroine which are marked in the score.

Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.971650 Composed by Jeffrey Hoover. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and part. 25 pages. Musicart Publications #4628067. Published by Musicart Publications (A0.971650). Ruby and Steel (duration 7 min.) is a fantasy work for alto saxophone and piano, reflecting on the physical qualities and contrasts between an unlikely pairing of materials – nature's precious gemstone ruby and the manmade material steel. The ideas of the red glow of molten steel and the red light of ruby are held in common. Establishing a modern yet Romantic atmosphere, an extended piano solo opens the work. The music is developed through a thematic transformation process: gestures of earlier music reappears as transformations of its previous selves. The interaction (both musical dialogue and subsequent agreement) between piano and saxophone is a prominent characteristic, along with ebb-and-flow of tempo. As with several other compositions by Jeffrey Hoover, there is an abstract painting–Ruby and Steel–created by Hoover as a visual interpretation of the musicJeffrey Hoover's work– music ranging from soloist to symphony orchestra –has received recognition through the prestigious Trieste prize, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications fellowships and more than 20 commissions. He is a member of the ACME roster of Mu Phi Epsilon, recognized for distinguished achievement as a composer. One unique aspect of Hoover’s work is when he combines composition with his paintings, creating synergetic art that intrigues and captivate audiences and performers alike. His paintings are seen in exhibitions and in concerts where his paintings are projected while musicians perform his music. Whether making interdisciplinary works, or traditional stand-alone sonic or visual art, Hoover shapes his work through inner vision and practical experience. Jeffrey Hoover’s background as a performer includes both classical and jazz music, as saxophonist and conductor. His book The Arts and Society: Making New Worlds is published by Kendall Hunt Publishing.Jeffrey Hoover was born on September 11, 1959, in Anderson, Indiana. He holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts (Composition and Interdisciplinary Fine Arts) from Texas Tech University, as well as a M.M. and Bch.Sc. from Ball State University. An introspective and meditative work with a lot of dynamic and phrasing nuance. Works well for church meditations or recital encores. Background Op.11/2 Alto Clarinet version. First of all, Scriabin composed mostly for the solo piano and also the orchestra. This is probably because he was a gifted pianist and therefore certainly appreciated the piano. Scriabin grew up in the late Romantic period, consequently, he was fond of the great piano masters of the time. As a result, he wrote his first noteworthy compositions in the manner of Chopin and Liszt. Forms Likewise, Scriabin used many of the same forms as Chopin. These certainly include the étude, prelude, nocturne, and even the mazurka. In contrast, as he developed his own sense of style his music became more and more unusual. So, the last five of his Piano Sonatas do not have a key signature and therefore lean towards atonality. Philosophy Scriabin also developed a keen interest in philosophy and likewise poetry. He was above all particularly fascinated by Nietzsche, Delville, and Blavatsky. Consequently, he finally established his own ideas about metaphysics and certainly mysticism. Scriabin consequently advanced theories about the relationship between color and musical keys. Synesthesia He also may have experienced a condition called synesthesia where he could probably sense a response created from a different stimulus. Therefore, it was almost as if he could see music and hear colors. Scriabin, therefore, arranged the colors in a circle similar to the circle-of-fifths and assigned each key area a color. Finally, he assigned the key of C to the color red, while the key of G was orange. Similarly, he assigned D to yellow, A to green, and so forth. Strangely, he did not differentiate between major and minor key colors. Multimedia Hence, his ability to translate colors into music certainly gave Scriabin a most noteworthy interest in creating multimedia events. Furthermore, He designed his biggest work, the Mysterium, to last an entire week. Even more, Scriabin made plans not only for music, but also colored lights, incense, and dancing. He designed the performance to occur in the foothills of the Himalaya mountains. The Mysterium was never performed, and only sketches of the work remain. Modern Performances In modern times, we often experience performances of Scriabin’s most famous completed works accompanied by colored laser lights and incense. These are the Poem of Ecstasy (completed in 1908) and the Poem of Fire (completed in 1910). The lighting effects for these early performances were accomplished by the clavier à lumiéres. It was a keyboard instrument that projected colored light onto a screen.

It was written originally for saxophone and organ by its comissioner the saxophonist Paul Wehage and Françoise Lvéchin-Gangloff, the organist at the Church of Sain Roch in Paris where the work was premièred on February 12, 2012 It also exists in a version for saxophone and piano and for saxophone and string orchestra (with harp). The orchestral version was recorded on Thérèse Brenet's CD Le Livre de L'Harmonie du Monde on JTB-Prod (http://www.jtbprod.com/llhm.htm ) The work is not a literal illustration of the poem, but an evocation of emotional states between a Romantic literary work and the music which the writing inspired more than a century and a half later, seen through a Modern musical aesthetic. Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.528177 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by Diego Marani. Classical,Concert,Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 24 pages. Diego Marani #5044141. Published by Diego Marani (A0.528177). Beethoven’s two romances for violin are the closest of siblings: No. 2 is in F Major, while No. 1 is in G Major. Both were dedicated to the same violin virtuoso, Ignaz Schuppanzigh. Musically, No. 2 shares the stately pace and singing quality of No. 1, as well as its rondo structure, which allows Beethoven to repeat the theme with additional material at each iteration. Some listeners hear the melancholy of lost love in this romance’s languorous melody, while others hear a more philosophical musing, poetic and contemplative.Originally composed for violin and orchestra, this arrangement is a faithful transcription for alto sax and piano and includes two different keys: F Major and Ab Major.

Concertino for Alto Saxophone and Piano

Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.755072 Composed by Sy Brandon. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and part. 50 pages. Sy Brandon #3366105. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755072). Concertino was composed during 2009 at the request of Dr. Andy Wen and premiered by him at the Region 4 NASA Conference in April 2011. This piano reduction of the band parts was completed in 2011. The work is in three movements. The first movement is in an abbreviated sonata form in a spirited Vivace tempo. The first theme group consists more of motives rather than an actual theme and is characterized by interplay between the soloist and the band. The second theme group has a lyrical saxophone line over a staccato bass line. The development begins quietly with the treatment of a syncopated idea from the second theme using a trio of solo saxophone, timpani and euphonium. After further development, a variant of the first theme group returns. The recapitulation consists only of first theme group ideas before ending with a brief coda. The second and third movements are performed with out pause between them. While the first movement was created during 2009, the second and third movements are a reworking of an earlier work by the composer for alto saxophone and piano soloists with orchestra. A rubato Lento theme containing many triplets that is accompanied by lush harmony begins the second movement. It is followed by a more scale-wise melody that is treated contrapuntally. Both these ideas develop during the movement leading to a strong climax before returning to a quiet conclusion. The third movement is an Allegro, once again with a rhythmic opening idea that changes meter often, and a more lyrical second idea with scale-wise passages as counterpoint. The development of these ideas leads to a cadenza for the solo saxophonist, followed by a coda that brings the composition to a rousing conclusion.
