If you really pushed me to make a call, Mussorsgky’s Pictures at an Exhibition would be one of my favourite pieces in the classical repertoire. Somewhat outrageously, for a pianist, I prefer the colours and textures of the orchestrated version. I reasonably regularly listen to it, especially in transit. But to be honest, it’s not the kind of music that I perform all that often i.e. music by dead, white, male composers. I mean, it’s 2020 and as the meme says I can’t believe I still have to protest this sh*t. And I feel it too for those in the visual art world. I mean, things are a good deal better over there in contemporary art world, where women are exhibited regularly and everyone seems to embrace it without a fuss. As for women artists from centuries gone by, it’s less good news but they’re working on it. I’m reminded of the situation daily as my older brother, who is excellent at choosing gifts thoughtfully, gave me some Guerrilla Girls merchandise which I use as an iPad cover. Entitled Advantages of Being a Woman Artist, it’s a list of truths that’s pretty relatable for any creative woman. My favourite bit - Being reassured that whatever kind of art you make it will be labeled feminine. Ooft. Too real. And so I conceived of this song cycle as a kind of gift for those fighting the traditional, patriarchal structures of the entire creative sector. Three songs, inspired by three works by three wonderful Australian women artists of last century. All are depictions of scenes around Sydney Harbour. In-curve is inspired by Grace Cossington Smith’s The Bridge in-curve, a depiction of an unfinished Sydney Harbour Bridge, painted in 1930 The Code is inspired by Thea Proctor’s woodcut print Women with fans. It is thought to be a portrait of two other artists, printmakers Ethel Spowers and Eveline Syme, sitting above Rushcutters Bay. Where would we sail? is inspired by a very different view of the same location Still life and Rushcutters Bay by Margaret Olley.

The Schwips-Lied ('Tipsy Song') is actually the 'Annen-Polka' (an orchestral polka originally composed by Johann Strauss, ‘Sohn,’ in 1852) with a vocal part added above, inserted in his 1883 operetta, Eine Nacht in Venedig (One Night in Venice). It is sung by a proper Victorian-era woman who finds herself slightly drunk. This arrangement of The Schwips-lied is a masterful, humorous, musical tour de force. The new English text has been updated and expanded to give more depth of character (the girl who wants to be naughty, but still be nice looking for a long drawn out kiss), complete with an extended cadenza. This new arrangement is scored for soprano with piano accompaniment. Performance time: 2:30+

Janis Joplin (3’24)Compositional Notes I met Cuban-American Silvia Curbelo when we were both artists in residency at the Seaside Institute. When she shared a few of her poems I was immediately taken by the melodic flow of her words, the imagery and her strong delivery. W. S. Merwin has describe her work as …accomplished, daring, full of intelligence; it is the generous first manifestation of an authentic and original gift. This second set of songs from The Secret History of Water was composed for one of my private voice students, a coloratura soprano with excellent pitch retention and a secure range extension. I’m in love, I’m floating is a whimsical poem that captures the essence of being in love, acting foolishly and impulsively, yet somehow grounded in the knowledge that she is still capable of counting her options like black sheep. Last Call is my musical interpretation of Curbelo’s enigmatic poem contemplating different personalities in a bar. In the third song, Janis Joplin, here is another whimsical, yet deeply touching poem with nostalgia as the key component.I loved including a quote from Me and Bobby McGee. I composed this piece as part of a larger song cycle, Colores mexicanos, which I wrote as part of an undergraduate thesis, Colores mexicanos: The Mexican Art Song and Setting Mexican Texts to Music (2016). This cycle explores various texts from various perspectives throughout Mexican history, culture, and society, while reflecting influences from Mexican folk and academic music within the composition. Si yo nunca... is the second piece in the cycle, and like the first, it features text from the Cantares mexicanos, written by Mexica authors during the beginning of the Spanish viceroyalty period in the 16th century. This text uses vague, abstract language to emphasize the idea that human culture never truly disappears, and it’s fitting for a state freshly defeated by another civilization. The musical setting features the Andulusian cadence, a compositional device frequently used in Latin American music, distorted across various octaves and in various figures, as the singer suggests that there is more after death, a fitting metaphor for an ancient yet very active culture that still pervades Mexican society today.

The final piece in the three-part song cycle, the young girl has grown up and has taken on the role of a woman. The piece itself is very slow moving, as the woman’s life has significantly slowed down, she’s no longer the young girl filled with hope, she knows what her duty is. The piano itself is always rising, sometimes in major thirds but then followed by clunky seconds and thirds. With a feeling of rush but also as if the whole piece is about to end and resolve, yet it continues in this cycle. Still, there’s reward in her work, a woman gets to see her child grow, and their dreams become her own. As any woman can tell you, there is a reward to being a good mother, wife, and woman. But it is only one that a woman can recognize.

The text is a poem by Isaac Watts (1674-1748), the English hymn-writer better known for such traditional favorites as Joy to the World or When I Survey the Wondrous Cross. Appearing in 1715 under the title, Hush! My Dear, Lie Still and Slumber, the lullaby portrays a mother singing to her baby of the serenity and comfort her baby enjoys, contrasted with the bleak conditions in which the baby Jesus was born. As she sings, the mother figuratively takes her child to the cross and expresses her longing to see the child come to know the Savior who died there. In this setting for solo soprano, accompanied by piano and cello, there are moments of tenderness, interspersed with interludes of intense emotion, finished with a tranquil conclusion.
