The second takes place after his return from captivity. Alyce has moved on with her life with another man. Purification continues as we are reminded of the innocence of children to look up and stare in awe and wonder at the moon’s light, and finally the daily cycle of nature brings night to the town, where the forgiveness of that confessed sin allows its inhabitants to enjoy perfect peace and sleep.Contents1. My husband and I had known Richard and Karen from our time as fellow graduate students at the Yale School of Music; Richard had studied composition and Karen piano, both very talented musicians and lovely people, so I was touched to be asked and very happy to write Peace on Earth as a gift for their daughter Katie, who was graduating from Oberlin Conservatory. Katie patiently waited out the coronavirus pandemic and on April 16, 2023 she and pianist Nomin Samdan premiered Peace on Earth on her masters degree recital at the Bard College Conservatory, where she was wrapping up her studies in the Vocal Arts Program. She wrote about Peace on Earth in her recital program notes that, “Hall responds to Williams’ catalog of constellations through slowly shifting harmonies and smooth, swung rhythms. The composer imagines the night sky as though one is dreaming it, ‘...whether it’s really up there above us or just taking place within the sleeping person’s soul.’ Through this luscious song, we are invited to daydream collectively and to come into a more unified consciousness.â€.

Composer’s Note - The BirdsI lived for a couple of years in a little top floor Art Deco apartment in Sydney’s Kings Cross. There were always birds sitting on my window sill because of the huge Jacaranda tree outside. I was at a bit of a crossroads in my life at that time, and would spend at least an hour daily walking in the neighbourhood, along those twisting, sloping streets and slowly eroding sandstone staircases so typical of Sydney’s harbourside suburbs. On the wall by such a staircase very close to my home was a tiny red spray painted bird with little music notes emanating from his beak. His was a constant presence in my life, I really rather liked him.Birds seemed to be making appearances everywhere in my life at that time, which I took as some kind of message from the universe. I was reading quite a lot of Christina Rossetti that year too, enjoying her writings about birds and all that they symbolised for her; beauty and sadness, hope and joy. There was a quiet optimism in her words, sometimes veiled but always present, which propelled me to write this song cycle T​ he Birds.​-- Sally Whitwell

If you really pushed me to make a call, Mussorsgky’s Pictures at an Exhibition would be one of my favourite pieces in the classical repertoire. Somewhat outrageously, for a pianist, I prefer the colours and textures of the orchestrated version. I reasonably regularly listen to it, especially in transit. But to be honest, it’s not the kind of music that I perform all that often i.e. music by dead, white, male composers. I mean, it’s 2020 and as the meme says I can’t believe I still have to protest this sh*t. And I feel it too for those in the visual art world. I mean, things are a good deal better over there in contemporary art world, where women are exhibited regularly and everyone seems to embrace it without a fuss. As for women artists from centuries gone by, it’s less good news but they’re working on it. I’m reminded of the situation daily as my older brother, who is excellent at choosing gifts thoughtfully, gave me some Guerrilla Girls merchandise which I use as an iPad cover. Entitled Advantages of Being a Woman Artist, it’s a list of truths that’s pretty relatable for any creative woman. My favourite bit - Being reassured that whatever kind of art you make it will be labeled feminine. Ooft. Too real. And so I conceived of this song cycle as a kind of gift for those fighting the traditional, patriarchal structures of the entire creative sector. Three songs, inspired by three works by three wonderful Australian women artists of last century. All are depictions of scenes around Sydney Harbour. In-curve is inspired by Grace Cossington Smith’s The Bridge in-curve, a depiction of an unfinished Sydney Harbour Bridge, painted in 1930 The Code is inspired by Thea Proctor’s woodcut print Women with fans. It is thought to be a portrait of two other artists, printmakers Ethel Spowers and Eveline Syme, sitting above Rushcutters Bay. Where would we sail? is inspired by a very different view of the same location Still life and Rushcutters Bay by Margaret Olley.

The timelessness of the words in the love poem struck me and I set it to music, later dedicating the song to two friends, Anda and Bill Winters, in celebration of a wedding anniversary. Orpheus is from William Shakespeareâ??s play The Life of King Henry VIII. Between 1996-2000, I composed and produced the music for audio recordings of all 38 Shakespeare plays in the Complete Arkangel Shakespeare collection. This song from the play was originally written for lute accompaniment and I later arranged the lute part for piano. Agua, Dónde Vas? is a setting of a poem by Federico GarcÃa Lorca. In 1998, I visited Barcelona to renew with a dear friend, Lucia from an illustrious family of flamenco musicians and dancers. We had met in 1985 when I first visited Granada and was hanging out in the flamenco tablaoâ??s of the Albaicin and Granada proper. Through Lucia I got a glimpse of a world in which Lorcaâ??s poetry vibrated daily and as casually as the music, songs and rhythms that peppered and punctuated conversations, discussions, exchanges of opinions, mealtimes in homes and bars and the precious moments of just hanging out. © 2023 Dominique Le Gendre.
