Mark R Lewis #1090864. Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1516691). The text for “Where Is Hope?” is adapted from the Lamentations Chapter 3 and is an expression of hopelessness, almost depression. The text starts out with the singer feeling lost, alone, and in pain. As the song progresses, the singer remembers God’s promises to always help and be with us. By the end of the song, the singer has regained hope and is triumphant and comforted. First and foremost, the music is very much intended to support the lyrical content of this song.Throughout the song, the key switches from major to minor (both parallel and relative) quite frequently. The piece starts with a very free section with almost no tempo alternating between just voices and simple piano accompaniment. The middle sections have stricter tempo and more active piano accompaniment and the final section increases in speed and excitement with piano truly accompanying the voices instead of just mostly mirroring them. Throughout the piece, meter always follows word stress so there are a surprising number of time signature changes with lyrical clarity always being more important than strict meter. All that said, the rhythms are not too difficult throughout the song and while there are some dissonant harmonies, the musical lines themselves should be singable by most intermediate choirs. The most challenging voice part is probably the tenor 1 line which spends a lot of time in the higher ranges. There are a few optional parts for the tenor 1s that will truly test the range of the singers.

Composed during the pandemic, this setting for male chorus and piano of Thomas Hardy's poem, The Darkling Thrush begins with a bleak picture of a barren and hostile landscape in winter. Then, as the voices narrate the sudden appearance of an agèd thrush, frail, gaunt, and small who floods the air with joyous singing, the piano accompaniment bursts into a reel. The final stanza muses that the cause for the bird's ecstatic sounds must have been some blessed hope whereof he knew and I was unaware. Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel) This absolutely gorgeous song was written by Billy Joel in response, I believe, to his young daughter asking him what happens when people die and, as he didn’t believe in the afterlife, he was trying to avoid answering her. I was asked to arrange this as a duet with a cello and a ‘smattering of (SSA) choir.’ As I was listening to recordings of this song, a second voice emerged for me, possibly someone who has passed on, calmly lulling the child to sleep whilst her father is trying to distract her from her questions. This was indeed the interpretation felt by people I played it to who found it very moving. This version has been reformatted for male voices, so duet, cello, smattering of TTBB. I hope you enjoy it. Included in this pack are a full score, vocal score and cello part with what I hope are useful cues for you to navigate your way around the piece. As the song develops the melody splits into 3 and then 4 part harmony, with the tune taken by different parts here and there. Tenor 1s have a soaring descant over the tune towards the end.
