In the fall of 2021, Amazon Prime introduced the first season of the television adaptation of Robert Jordan's iconic Wheel of Time book series. The series included a lot of wonderful music composed by Lorne Balfe, including The Song of Manetheren in episode 2. It is presented as a folk song performed by the character Mat and joined by the other main characters as they travel on horseback through the countryside.This arrangement of the piece is arranged by Mark R Lewis for a cappella TTBB ensemble with additional lyrics added by Mark R Lewis. The baritones have the melody the whole time with the basses providing a lower, drone-like harmony and the tenors providing upper harmonies. The arrangement also includes body percussion in the form of foot stomps and hand claps. The piece is not particularly difficult but does have some rather quick, atypical rhythms and may test the ranges of younger singers. This a cappella, TTBB quartet/choir with optional hand drum part by Mark Lewis showcases all four voice parts with key changes that place the melody nicely within every vocal range. Each verse explores a different method of accompaniment giving the whole choir a variety of choral experiences.

THE PARTING BEFORE THE BATTLE was written by Thomas Moore (1779-1852) an Irish writer, poet and lyricist celebrated for his Irish Melodies. He is best remembered for the lyrics of The Minstrel Boy and The Last Rose of Summer and one of the first recognized champions of freedom in Ireland. As an impressionable young man with a quick Irish temper, the execution of a close college friend during the United Irishmen's Rebellion aroused in Moore a patriotic fervor that provided his greatest literary inspiration. Thomas Moore's best known work included a brilliant biographical masterpiece taken from the confidential memoirs of Lord Byron. His own Memoirs, Journal, and Correspondence are an invaluable social record of life in England and Ireland during the first half of the nineteenth century. James W. Knox, composer, depicts a battle of the brave Irish men and women who have courageously fought against those who seek destruction. The chorus should sing with great boldness and display a sense of honorable pride. To create a dramatic affect, James also used Erse or Gaelic with an ancient proverb, Nà neart go cur le chéile. (There is no strength without unity.) This text is used throughout the piece in addition to the poem. The proverb is set to the melody of Dies irae , which is a famous Gregorian chant dating back to the 13th century and is found as part of the Latin sequence in the Requiem. .

These three dramatic but humorous episodes in the life of the great king, to texts by Thackeray and the composer, tell us first of all how the elderly King Canute was tiring of life as, no longer young, he even yawned while his favourite male voice choir was performing. The second movement tells of all the victories he had won - but, as the third movement tells us, there was one thing left to do - conquer the sea!  Sadly, however, the sea disobeyed his commands, and 'King Canute is dead and gone, but the legend still lives on'. The story is untrue, of course, but if it happened, though it probably didn't, it would have been in the vicinity of the Battle of Ashingdon, near to the town of South Woodham Ferrers, Essex, UK - where the songs were first performed by the South Woodham Ferrers Male Voice Choir.
