Franz von Suppé was obliged to compete with them by taking the time-honored traditions of Vienna and combining it with the new style of Offenbach. Die schöne Galathée was Franz von Suppé's first critical success. The sculptor Pygmalion has fallen madly in love with his statue of Galathée and accordingly does not want to sell it to Mydas, a patron of the arts. Instead he prays to Venus, the goddess of the love, that the statue be brought to life. The wish is granted but Galathée turns out to be a very independent-minded creature. She is unfaithful to Pygmalion with his servant Ganymed (because he is much more pleasing to her than Pygmalion) and does not reject Mydas, who offers her jewelry. When Pygmalion catches Galathée in a compromising situation, he successfully implores Venus to turn her back into stone. The jewelry offered by Mydas is also turned into stone, but the whole statue is sold to him.

They appear one-by-one, and as more and more collect in the sky they turn from several singularities into constellations, becoming the night visions formed in the cosmos.

This composition is a Bolero in 12/8. It begins with the initial rhythm that is played throughout the piece. The piece begins at ppp and increases in volume as each instrument plays the melody section. As each instrument enters, it forms a round of the same melody. The bridge begins with the continuing rhythm with each instrument adding their own note with the same rhythm until the complete quartet is playing the same rhythm in a chord. The bridge leads to the climax section where the initial rhythm continues with the third instrument imitates a tympani while the upper two instruments play the melody in harmony at fff volume. American composer, James Nathaniel Holland, brings a ballet adapted from the first century Roman novel by Gaius Petronius (cir. 50 A.D.) to the stage. An entertaining ballet for adults (not suitable for general audiences under the age of 18), celebrating the male ballet dancer's physique and a laugh at our own human sexuality. The comedy is a romp of three gay protagonists and their adventures and misadventure in ancient Rome and their characters; an ex-gladiator, Enclopius, his young lover, Giton, and an upper class snob, Ascyltos. It should also be said that this ballet is not pure gratuitous vulgarity, there is a interweaving story containing a deeper message of real human relationships, the satire of ancient Roman archetypes, and a humorous glimpse into ancient Roman life that still rings true even 2,000 plus years later. Regardless of the subject matter, Holland's original music is fantastic tapestry of counterpoint, set in a sort of atonal-ism and heavy percussion, evoking a period of history no longer available to us. Although not all cues and counterpoint is contained here, this piano score is extremely useful for either a performance with 2 pianos and percussion and a dance company, a director's/choreographer's score, or a concise conductor's score, or rehearsal score. Measure numbers line up with the full score. An orchestral, performance CD is available for those company's on a budget.

The drama was based on an extremely touching story about a lady named Doue E, and was written by the author Guan Hanqing during the Yuan Dynasty. It is divided into three sections in a cyclic form, with one theme. The instrumentation includes voices for male and female, suona (Chinese cornet), there are more than ten traditional Chinese percussions are used, such as the wind gong, large and small luo (as used in Beijing opera), and the Chinese clapper, Paiban. The sound of suona indicates the lady Dou E with her battle cry and strong faith. The music begins after lady Dou E’s faint narrative. ※The Lament of Tou-Ehr was commissioned by the Neo Classical Music Group. The dance was arranged by Fon-xuei Liu, with orchestra and chorus conducted by the composer, Shui-long Ma himself.
