The string parts range from elementary to advanced to give the very young players experience in an orchestral environment. Hall of the Mountain King starts very softly with the lower string pizzicato and ends with a crashing climax. American composer, James Nathaniel Holland, brings a ballet adapted from the first century Roman novel by Gaius Petronius (cir. 50 A.D.) to the stage. An entertaining ballet for adults (not suitable for general audiences under the age of 18), celebrating the male ballet dancer's physique and a laugh at our own human sexuality. The comedy is a romp of three gay protagonists and their adventures and misadventure in ancient Rome and their characters; an ex-gladiator, Enclopius, his young lover, Giton, and an upper class snob, Ascyltos. It should also be said that this ballet is not pure gratuitous vulgarity, there is a interweaving story containing a deeper message of real human relationships, the satire of ancient Roman archetypes, and a humorous glimpse into ancient Roman life that still rings true even 2,000 plus years later. Regardless of the subject matter, Holland's original music is fantastic tapestry of counterpoint, set in a sort of atonal-ism and heavy percussion, evoking a period of history no longer available to us. Although not all cues and counterpoint is contained here, this piano score is extremely useful for either a performance with 2 pianos and percussion and a dance company, a director's/choreographer's score, or a concise conductor's score, or rehearsal score. Measure numbers line up with the full score. An orchestral, performance CD is available for those company's on a budget.

Strong ForcesThe work is inspired by the four fundamental forces of nature. These forces explain any phenomena which can be produced in the universe.Throughout all composition, it is latent the mathematic construction based in the series Fibonacci. In the first of the movements, Fibonacci's series is present in the notes' sequence that forms the series of 16 sounds and it is going to be present throughout the whole work. This series is taking form along the movement and it is getting melody and harmony.Although it is far away from the sonata form, as we know it in its period of highest glory, it takes elements of it and updates to our days. In this movement, we can find sonata form elements as the exposition, development, transitions or coda.The central part of the first movement becomes in the slow movement, being more intimate and lyrical, free of the serials ties although it uses resources before cited -now called common practice-.The movement finish with a short re-exposition that concludes with the virtuosic of the soloist doubling the series and adding more tension until conforming the series in its full whole.II. Weak ForcesIt is the most tribal of both movements. Its structure is more complex and in it, we also can find clear reminiscences to the sonata form.We can divide the movement into two big blocks. The first one is formed for the introduction and sections one and two.IntroducciónIt is based in one ostinato of three notes where the accent is changing provoking unsymmetric, this ostinato represents the nucleus of our existence. The piccolo and the trombone introduce us to the human element representing the two elements that form the development of the whole movement.The two elements of thematics are taken from the series, the first one is easily recognizable because it appears in his primary form.First section & cadenzaIn this movement, the rhythm, the melody, and the harmony are based on the sequence of Fibonacci. As the theme ostinato of the soloist as the melody is formed under the rhythm of 1, 2, 3 and 5. This section leads us to the second section with a clear mode of cadence. In the cadenza, the elements of the rhythm are varied freely with an accompaniment of the Spring Drum.DevelopmentIt is formed by two Rondo sub-sections in which the solo part has been created through the mirror technique.Both sections have the next form:Intro-A-B-A-B-(B(minor)+A)Intro-A-B-A-B-(B(major)+A)First section & CodaThe movement ends with the repetition of the first section and the final code.

Strong ForcesThe work is inspired by the four fundamental forces of nature. These forces explain any phenomena which can be produced in the universe.Throughout all composition, it is latent the mathematic construction based in the series Fibonacci. In the first of the movements, Fibonacci's series is present in the notes' sequence that forms the series of 16 sounds and it is going to be present throughout the whole work. This series is taking form along the movement and it is getting melody and harmony.Although it is far away from the sonata form, as we know it in its period of highest glory, it takes elements of it and updates to our days. In this movement, we can find sonata form elements as the exposition, development, transitions or coda.The central part of the first movement becomes in the slow movement, being more intimate and lyrical, free of the serials ties although it uses resources before cited -now called common practice-.The movement finish with a short re-exposition that concludes with the virtuosic of the soloist doubling the series and adding more tension until conforming the series in its full whole.II. Weak ForcesIt is the most tribal of both movements. Its structure is more complex and in it, we also can find clear reminiscences to the sonata form.We can divide the movement into two big blocks. The first one is formed for the introduction and sections one and two.IntroducciónIt is based in one ostinato of three notes where the accent is changing provoking unsymmetric, this ostinato represents the nucleus of our existence. The piccolo and the trombone introduce us to the human element representing the two elements that form the development of the whole movement.The two elements of thematics are taken from the series, the first one is easily recognizable because it appears in his primary form.First section & cadenzaIn this movement, the rhythm, the melody, and the harmony are based on the sequence of Fibonacci. As the theme ostinato of the soloist as the melody is formed under the rhythm of 1, 2, 3 and 5. This section leads us to the second section with a clear mode of cadence. Asian Symmetries by Dan Heslink Asian Symmetries is a fanciful work which draws loosely from the musical procedures and sonic preferences of Indonesian and other Asian musical styles. It is scored for three percussionists, each with their own battery of instruments. Gamelan-like impressions might be inferred from the cyclical nature of its rhythm, using metal plates like cymbals and gongs to mark large units of rhythmic time. Also evocative are the faster moving elaborations and a preponderance of metallophones in the instrumentation. The work is medium to difficult in its demands. There are quick changes of instrument, planned to be manageable but requiring some attention to logistics Each player’s performance station must remain stationary, with all instruments in reach without moving the performer’s position. Percussion I and Percussion III players must set up next to each other so that they may share the tenor drum. A selection of mallets that allows different striking surfaces to sound good without undue picking up and setting down of mallets is suggested. Changes of meter and tempo occur, and an odd meter section sporting measures in 12/8, 6/8, 11/8 may require some additional attention. Winter Bells composed by Dan Heslink Imagine a cold winter evening in which church bells, sleigh bells, and other bell sounds are mixed into a tantalizing soundscape. Winter Bells explores the interaction of these sounds through chimes, sleigh bells, orchestra bells, marimba, vibraphone, two triangles, large suspended cymbal, large tam-tam, and two timpani. Winter Bells requires seven performers; the two chime players share one rack of chimes and one part. It presents mostly modest demands, both in performing technique in the number and type of percussion instruments. Challenges include rapid passage work in the part for orchestra bells, requiring smooth and even negotiation of the instrument, and a tour de force of polyrhythms at the end, where all bell timbres of the soundscape are juxtaposed. Some parts present more challenge than others, making it an ideal selection for ensembles populated by players of uneven levels of experience. To some listeners Winter Bells is possibly reminiscent of a sleigh ride without the horse’s hooves. It is sure to be an audience pleaser during a winter concert, especially close to Christmas and Hanukkah.

Alexandriana for percussion ensemble (12 performers) by Dan Heslink The term Alexandriana is popularly used to reference the Great Library of antiquity in Alexandria, Egypt. Rooted in Alexander the Great’s global military and exploratory exploits (334 - 323 BCE), the library symbolizes the ancient Greek ever expanding worldview, especially under the influence of Alexander and his tutor, Aristotle. Alexander died long before construction of the Ancient Museum and Library of Alexandria, but the concept of a universal library was uniquely his. The mixing of Hellenistic columns with Egyptian architecture and the housing of thousands of scrolls in Greek, Turkish, Babylonian, Egyptian and Hebrew, intensify the division of the library broadly into two large sections, one for eastern knowledge and one for western knowledge. In this musical score, typically western is the thematic concept (expressed most clearly in the chimes), the tonal, triadic-based harmony and sectional concept of form. The music’s sectional nature parallels the library’s different rooms, each containing their own genre of knowledge (history, mathematics, poetry, etc.) Evocative of eastern musical practices are the simultaneous layers of different rhythmic subdivisions, oriental modes, and florid lines in the xylophone and vibe parts. In this score, eastern musical procedures are expressed with instruments commonly found in the Western orchestra or wind band. The performers are encouraged to always emphasize the score’s contrasts. Passages for indefinitely pitched percussion featuring the song within the drums contrast with other passages of purely quantitative rhythm. Complexity in the interaction of parts contrast with simple rhythmic unison. Passages of thick harmony contrast with modal monophonic melodies accompanied only by indefinitely pitched sounds. Overall, there is a wide dynamic range. During long passages of gradually accruing energy, take care to not build dynamics too quickly, and during fortissimo passages, drums should be stroked in a manner that avoids excessive aggression. The rhythmic background of 16th notes must be consistent among all players so that interlocking rhythmic motifs are consistent. Often the tom-toms have melodic passages that imitate the shape of mallet or timpani melodies. Tune the drums for a warm, round sound and select mallets accordingly. Bar percussion players should apply a flowing legato to their passage work. Soft sections are intended to sound mysterious: be sure to use mallets that match that character. The arrangement allows flexibility, so this piece can be performed using tuned bottles (25cl, 33cl and 75cl), lip whistle, finger snaps, complemented with xylophones and optionally with voices to sing the lyrics too. This arrangement was made during the 2020 quarantine, when the world was shutdown due to a world virus pandemic. Some of the music students didn’t have their music instruments at home, so this arrangement came up to fill that gap and it is perfect to keep doing music with the available option of instruments.On each rehearsal letter, you can play optional improvisations, while keeping the voices 5-8. These improvisations can be easily done using the C major pentatonic scale or the note ranges presented on the right, that even include Eâ™ and Bâ™. If played using lip whistle, bendings will be possible too. This arrangement presents 8 voices and an alternative solution for voice 8, that makes it easier to be performed as it is the place where bottles are divided between the players. There is also an optional bass line to complement voice eight one octave bellow. In order to keep it simple, neither dynamics or articulations were included and the notes were represented always in the middle octave in G clef. The correct pitch ranges are presented in the performance notes.The amount of water will change the pitch differently depending if you are blowing or doing percussion on a bottle. When blowing, the more water you use, the higher the pitch will be, but while doing percussions more water means lower pitch. A good option, in order to save time during rehearsals, is to fill the bottles with water, marking the level with a pen, and then filling the bottle with the desired amount of hot wax instead of water. This way, when the wax cools down you can have a tuned bottle without requiring to tune it again every single rehearsal. Please note that the bottles should be made of glass and that different aspects change the performance. For percussion, straight bottles are better to tune as the curves in the bottles tend to produce unstable pitches. The extreme notes of the range might not be available in every single bottle, so you might need to try some alternatives. For example the high A is available in some beer bottles, while the low G is available in larger 75cl bottles of champaign. In GRAVITY I explored different gravities as forces we not only feel them in every moments of our lives, but also thinking of living without or escaping from them seems impossible. Likewise, those gravities exist in the music, make us feel the music continuous, desirable, logical and an integrated language of art. The exploration of the path from chaos to unity, and from unity to multiplicity, is where the title came from. GRAVITY consists of two main sections. The first section, which shows the fully-grown and flourished musical ecosystem, and the second part; a flashback to just after big-bang, which tries to musicalize the creation of the gravity! In the first section, I’ve used the concept of horizontal and vertical minimalism. At the very beginning of the piece we have a structure that bring the idea of the vertical minimalism out. In every moment, each instrument plays the same note as others. However, the narrative line is divided into different octaves, so, the melody is not the same in spite of the fact that each instrument plays the same tone. This structure also reminds the paradoxical ladder or optical staircase illusion. The narration is built up until it reaches temporal climax. At the same time, this melody starts again from the beginning with some microscopic differences visible vividly to musicians. This semi reciprocating musical narration, could be observed as a musical example of the staircase illusion. After this part, but still in the first section of the music, I’ve used the horizontal (traditional) minimalism idioms to explore the bounding forces present in the music. Although, what interesting here is the creation of synthetic voices which is the result of different amounts of the nuances and different combinations of the sound. For keen ears, it seems like shades of neon lights, penetrate into one another in the scale of time and create a big picture of micro fluctuating objects. In the second section or just after big-bang, I’ve observed and recreate musically, the very moment of creation of the gravity just after the big-bang. Here, we don’t have melody, rhythm, structure, narration and other aspects of the music in the traditional way, although all of them are present in the music. very single sound or noise is meaningful and showing the assemblage process of the forces in the music to create a melody line. I’ve occupied idioms of contemporary Sonorism genre to create the atmosphere. This highly complex texture shows the virtuosity of interpreters and the capability of the instruments in avant-garde literature and extended techniques. The music is concluded by a fast-tempo finale, with the instruction of fortissimo possiblile (as loud as possible). The piece, in fact, will not be finished as a morendo, but, it opens a space for hypothetically living structure; constantly grows, flourishes, shines and decays.

Grim (A0.939392). Another Place is a marimba quartet on two instruments with some accessory items like a mounted bass drum, cymbal, and wind chimes. The work is about 10.5 minutes long, and holds three distinct movements that begin with solemn rolls that slowly become more regimented and rhythmic. The second movement raises the bar and becomes very rhythmic and syncopated with a Reich-like approach of melody vs interlocking harmony. This climax brings a high dynamic level to the forefront of the instruments with interlocking impact points being contrasted to unison hits. The third movement takes this original melody and harmony to the next level by using changing time signatures and motivic ideas to maximize the powerful ending. Throughout there is a deep sense of color and texture that can be maximized by the ensemble in new and exciting ways with each performance. This has plenty of ink, but also leaves a lot to interpret and bring the ensemble’s voice forward. I hope you enjoy! This work won the Audience Award in the Rocky Mountain Music Composition Contest in 2022 as well as Second Prize overall. These international awards were judged by a panel of seven judges from around the world, but with the competition based out of Toronto, Canada.

Marimba could be substituted for the Bass Xylo. The tempo marking and dynamics are suggested ones only. Arranged in the key of F Major, the Bb has been written as accidentals rather than as a key signature to make it an easier read for less advanced performers.

Franz von Suppé was obliged to compete with them by taking the time-honored traditions of Vienna and combining it with the new style of Offenbach. Die schöne Galathée was Franz von Suppé's first critical success. The sculptor Pygmalion has fallen madly in love with his statue of Galathée and accordingly does not want to sell it to Mydas, a patron of the arts. Instead he prays to Venus, the goddess of the love, that the statue be brought to life. The wish is granted but Galathée turns out to be a very independent-minded creature. She is unfaithful to Pygmalion with his servant Ganymed (because he is much more pleasing to her than Pygmalion) and does not reject Mydas, who offers her jewelry. When Pygmalion catches Galathée in a compromising situation, he successfully implores Venus to turn her back into stone. The jewelry offered by Mydas is also turned into stone, but the whole statue is sold to him.

I wrote Nuevo-Nueve for an ensemble of nine new first-time percussion students. Nuevo meaning new or different, and Nueve meaning nine, seemed to be a good title for the piece. Going along with the concept of nine, the song is written in nine bar phrases and has a total of 99 measures as well. It uses simple and repetitive patterns to introduce students to the instruments that are utilized in the piece. Out of the nine students that I originally wrote it for, six were wind players and the other three had never read music. They had great success with it (and a lot of fun, too!). The first four parts are all listed as generic mallet parts, and all work pretty well with whatever mallet instruments that you have available. Part 3 and 4 double each other, but part 4 is in bass clef. They are written on the same sheet. If you have the equipment for it, I recommend the following instrumentation: Part 1: bells or marimba Part 2: vibraphone Part 3: marimba Part 4: (optional, bass clef, doubles part 3): bass guitar, keyboard, or mallet controller Part 5: hi-hat cymbal, suspended cymbal, mounted tambourine Part 6: guiro, castanets, maracas, two pitched toms Part 7: drum set Part 8: suspended cymbal, china cymbal, splash cymbal, triangle Part 9: concert bass drum, cabasaBe sure to check out my other small ensemble arrangements here on Sheet Music Plus, and thanks for taking a look!

This composition begins with a 12/8 rock tempo. Although it is written in C, the composition is begins in D Minor. The Marimba keeps the 12/8 going while the other three become punctuations. The punctuation continues while the Glockenspiel plays the melody. At measure 15 the song moves into a 6/8 feel. At measure 34 the song returns to the original 12/8 feel. The composition then splits to where the Vibraphone takes on harmony in the 12/8 feel while the Glockenspiel and Xylophone take on a 6/8 countermelody. A short bridge is created by stacking the other 2 on top of the Vibraphone and Marimba 12/8 feel. Then it splits again to where the Xylophone stays with the Vibraphone and Marimba pattern and the Glockenspiel goes off on it's own. During this time the Glockenspiel folds in the 6/8 melody, creating a pleasant conflict. The song D.C.'s to the original 12/8 content.
