Arte Nova Music Lab #3007597. Published by Arte Nova Music Lab (A0.742404). Carcassi was born in Florence, Italy, and first studied the piano, but learned guitar when still a child. He quickly gained a reputation as a virtuosoconcert guitarist.He moved to Germany in 1810, gaining almost immediate success. In 1815, he was living in Paris, earning his living as a teacher of both the piano and the guitar. On a concert tour in Germany in 1819, he met his friend Antoine Meissonnier for the first time. Also a famous guitarist, Meissonnier published many of Carcassi's works in his Paris publishing house. For Meissonnier he also arranged a number of popular songs for guitar that were originally written for piano, including works by Théodore Labarre and Loïsa Puget.From 1820 on, Carcassi spent the majority of his time in Paris. In 1823, he performed an extremely successful series of concerts in London that earned him great fame, both as a performing artist and as a teacher. However, in Paris, a long time passed before his talents were truly recognized, partly because of the presence of Ferdinando Carulli.Carcassi was in Germany again during autumn 1824. Afterwards he performed in London, where his reputation now gave him access to more prestigious concert halls. Finally he returned to Paris. For several years, he made concert trips from here to the most important cultural towns of Europe, including London. Published by Daniel Cueto (A0.876582). To write Tiento para un pensador, I found inspiration in an experience that I had many years ago, when I was a student in Dusseldorf, Germany. I was spending time one night with my friend Rafael Aguirre, a virtuoso classical guitarist, as he was casually playing through some of his repertoire. He asked me if I thought that it was possible to play a Baroque fugue - one of the most complex of musical genres - on the guitar. Before I had time to think about the question, he started playing his own arrangement of a fugue by J.S. Bach, talking me through it as the fugue theme appeared in different registers and the counterpoint got more and more intricate.The effectiveness and beauty of the contrapuntal sounds I experienced that night stayed with me. So in 2020, when I was invited to attend the Twisted Spruce Symposium and had a chance to compose my first piece for the guitar, I quickly decided that I would take up the challenge of writing my own fugue for the instrument. Looking to find a more specific context for the new work, I discovered the early Spanish genre of the tiento, essentially an early Hispanic form of the fugue. I came up with a melody which, I sensed, featured elements of that early style combined with a touch of Andean melancholy. As I composed, I strived to follow this basic affect throughout, letting the lines evolve organically as the piece seemed to engage in a long, continued search for its cultural and temporal identity.Para un pensador means for a thinker in Spanish. It is my homage to the intellectual guitarist, to the reflective and discerning performer of intricate contrapuntal music.I would like to extend special thanks to Nathan Fischer for producing this valuable edition of Tiento para un pensador.

Published by Richard Hirsch (A0.1202804). I offer an original composition for solo acoustic guitar that I have carried with me over several decades and through several changes in living situation. I started working with the piece already back in the 1970s when I was living in Frankfurt/Main, Germany and kept developing it when I moved to Stockholm and from there to Gothenburg, Sweden. A first recording of the composition was made in a private studio just outside Gothenburg in 1987. I have only recently been able to transmit the piece to musical notation in preparation for publication.The piece has a relaxed nature and contains many repetitions of simple themes that are meant to evoke a sense of monotonous spaciousness. One musician who listened to the first recording said he thought it sounded minimalistic, which I thought was a good description, although at the time I was unaware that minimalism was a term used to describe a whole style of music. The piece has a rather meditative character in the first part, turning more rhythmic in the second part. The third part is a swing version of the first part and the piece ends with a return to the meditative straight first part. The piece is meant to be primitive in the sense of primordial and goes in something resembling a pentatonic scale based on A. The rhythmic second part should be played so that the guitar starts to hum an A tone, the humming carrying over into and through the more melodic sections. The composition has an organic development with slight variations in the basic themes as the piece progresses.Depending on the mood of the interpreting performer, the repetitions might be played in a different order or a different number of times. I seldom play the composition exactly the same every time myself. The piece has a participatory character, especially in the more rhythmic and swing parts, inviting the listeners to clap, stamp their feet, or drum on whatever is available,As the notation is accompanied by tablature, I refrain from giving left hand fingering. The right hand fingering consists basically of base notes played by the thumb and treble notes played by alternating index and middle fingers in combination with the ring finger.

I offer an arrangement of Bach’s all-time favourite Jesus, Joy of Man’s Desiring in an African inspired rendering for solo classical or acoustic guitar. The arrangement uses lots of natural harmonics in an attempt to mimic the African kalimba style of music. The arrangement goes in 4/4 time in polyrhythm with a second tier of accents at 2, 2&, and 4 with a slight swing. The polyrhythm makes the final chord sound like an upbeat! The low bases are notated as quarter notes and should be played so that they do not ring out. They are not muted (staccato), except where notated, but they should be kept short to give the piece a bouncy character.The arrangement contains the main melody and chorus sections of the original in G major, although I have changed the original in a number of ways. The first melody and chorus section in G major is prefaced by several bars of natural harmonics and is repeated only after the melody and chorus section in the key of A minor. Natural harmonics appear in many places in the piece interwoven with Bach’s original melody and chorus. I think the natural harmonics give the piece a really glorious ring. The present arrangement incorporates many sections of a sister arrangement of the piece that I published recently that follows the original more closely and works as an introduction to the music with extensive left and right hand fingerings and tablature for intermediate students of guitar. This arrangement, considering the many natural harmonics, staccatos, tempo, and swing, is perhaps better suited for advanced intermediate students of classical or acoustic guitar. With that in mind, I therefore refrain from any extensive left and right hand fingerings for the present arrangement. The piece is a real joy to play and listen to! The tempo for the present arrangement has been set to 140 bpm. I think the pace gives a real swing to the music. The piece may however be played at a faster tempo, e.g. Presto, or somewhere in between. With this great music you can hardly go wrong.The title I have chosen for the arrangement aims to be a play on words as in many English speaking parts of the world the name Bach often rhymes with the word ‘back’ as in a return to some place or time. ‘Bach to Africa’ is then an allusion to humanity’s primordial roots in Africa. Rejoice!

Nadir (1994) is written for prepared guitar, a term usually associated with a piano in which certain objects have been placed on the strings in order to alter the conventional sound of the instrument. Many composers have written music for prepared piano, among them John Cage, who, according to Mr. Paraskevas, was the inspiration for his transferring of the same technique to the guitar. It is quite possible that nobody has used this kind of technique on the guitar before. After experimenting with various materials, he decided on the use of two metal paper clips, which he puts at specific locations on the fingerboard, so that they best produce the desired sound effect, a sound both harmonic and percussive. Nadir suggests the lowest point, here associated with the notion of death. The piece bears many programmatic references to the struggle between good and evil, life and death, musically portrayed in the persistent ostinato rhythms and the fragmented melodic phrases. Death cuts through in the form of an abrupt strike on the wood, the fingers continue to play but no sound is heard, until two more strikes make their movement stop. Little by little life and sound start again, but the final strike brings about the pessimistic message that fate and death predominate in the end. The piece ends with the inscription ...but sooner or later we live forever - a final optimistic touch. Nadir was the outcome of continuous experimentation on the capabilities of the guitar as an instrument, and all the potential sound effects that one can draw from it. ...Dr. Paraskevas, is an amazingly versatile guitarist. He conquers the many technical challenges of this repertoire with ease, he can sing with the purest tone (try the opening work, Alfonsina y el Mar, and see). What makes Visions of Azure a wonderful guitar CD rather than simply a good one is the last 18 minutes. The guitarist saves his own compositions for last, and if the ear is fatigued at this point in the recital. Paraskevas gives it good reason to wake up....I am sold on Paraskevas's playing, and do not think hunting down the alternatives is necessary. In short, this is an essential CD for those interested in modern classical guitar.

It’s in a ¾ jazz waltz time signature. I also believe Dave Brubeck covered it.I interpreted many chords to be played as triads or eliminated, and single notes are used. I tend to use a minimalist style that keeps the important parts of the music. I arranged it to be played an octave above as written (8 va.). It sounds great on electric guitars. Accurate intonation is important on this song. You do need access to the upper notes. It explores the upper register of the guitar. I also play many of the chords as arpeggios (varying between high note to low note and vice versa). It is a very beautiful tune! I hope you will like it! I certainly do!P.S. I have to admit, I like using chorus and delay on the electric guitar, it gives an ethereal quality to this one!

He was a great Mexican guitarist-composer Manuel MarÃa Ponce Cuéllar (8 December 1882 – 24 April 1948) was a Mexican composer active in the 20th century. His work as a composer, music educator and scholar of Mexican music connected the concert scene with a usually forgotten tradition of popular song and Mexican folklore. Many of his compositions are strongly influenced by the harmonies and form of traditional songs. This work, which I composed for a class in Romanticism while attending Eastern Michigan University, contains many aspects of neo-Romanticism, i.e. pentatonic scales, a plethora of added chords, jazz chords, chromaticism, artificial harmonics all. contained within an A-B-A format.
