Published by Eric J Roth (A0.914746). Auguste Franchomme was one of the most well-known and respected cellists in 19th century France. He was born in 1808 in Lille and went on to have a long, celebrated career in Paris as a performer, teacher and composer. Of the three pieces arranged here for guitar, one is drawn from the Twelve Caprices, Op. 7 and two are from the Twelve Etudes, Op. 35. The Caprice, No. 9, Larghetto con dolore, retains its original key of B minor. Etudes, No. 5, Allegretto, and No. 6, Andante con moto, have been transposed to new keys. All transfer well to the guitar, offering novel textures while still seeming idiomatic to the instrument. .

This guitar version shows a gentle down-up stroke on the accompanyment and short lead that very close to finger style. In additiion with some harmonics, it won't dissapoint you as a finger style beginner.

Luigi Rinaldo Legnani (7 November 1790 – 5 August 1877) was an Italian guitarist, singer, composer and luthier.[1]Born in Ravenna, Legnani was trained as a string player while very young but dedicated himself to guitar and voice. His debut as an operatic tenor was in Ravenna in 1807; his singing career spanned 17 years.[2] His career as a guitarist began with a concert in Milan in 1819; with his concerts in 1822 concerts in Vienna and return visits in 1833 and 1839 he tried to continue the guitar tradition established there by Mauro Giuliani.[3]Legnani is perhaps best known for his 36 Caprices op. 20 for the guitar, which cover all the major and minor keys, and which were probably inspired by Paganini's 24 Caprices for the violin. He and Paganini were friends from the 1830s; while it was once thought that he and Paganini performed together in public (Powroźniak mentions a concert in Northern Italy in 1837),[4] there is no evidence to support this claim. After the 1850s Legnani retired from active performance and became an instrument maker, concentrating on guitars and violins. The Legnani model guitar was popular in Central Europe through the middle of the nineteenth century.Legnani composed some 250 works, which were published in his lifetime throughout many of the major publishing houses in Europe. He died in Ravenna.

Luiz José Maria de Oliveira, a man of many trades, was born in Portugal in 1821.He lived until 1883 in Coimbra, where he was a musician and composer, lithographer, merchant and hairdresser. These Variations on a Sentimental Theme, from his guitar magazine O Conimbricense Armónico published between 1848-49 are one of the rare examples of composition for the 6 string guitar in Portugal during the first half of the 19th century. Arranged for solo classical guitar 4 pp intermediate difficulty Maurice Ravel (1875 -1937) Ravel was born in the Basque region of France and much of his work shows a Spanish influence (this, together with his interest in jazz has produced some exceptional guitar transcriptions). He was a pupil of Faure and at first fell, like many contemporary composers, under Debussy's spell. However, his ascetic and intellectual bents produced from the start a refinement of composition and orchestration, and development of melody, all his own. Later music shows a fondness for the rhythmic features of jazz, and thoughtful incorporation of the innovations of modern music – strong dissonance, atonality etc. Piece en Forme de Habenera is from the 'Rapsodie espagnole', written for orchestra in 1907. Habenera is a Cuban dance that came to Spain in the mid-19th century and named after Havana (Habana).

On 24 September 1854, she married the English flautist Robert Sidney Pratten.Catharina began touring in Europe from the age of eight, and by 1844 was well known in England as a composer and guitar teacher. She soon established her school - Madame Sidney Pratten's Guitar School - and published tutorials, including Guitar School: a Book of Methods (1859) and Learning the Guitar: Simplified (1874), which advocated the use of alternative tuning in E major. Her pupils included Queen Victoria’s daughters Louise, Princess of Wales and Beatrice, and the actor, singer, guitarist, and composer Ernest Shand.She composed some 250 works, most of them for solo guitar or voice and guitar. Heike Matthiesen has recorded some of the guitar pieces, including the variations on Carnaval de Venise, the two Fairy Sketches, and the Serenade.Her residence in London was 22 Dorset Street, Portman Square, where she lived after the death of her husband in 1868, and where she died on 10 October 1895. Her sister, Giulia Pelzer (also a teacher), continued to run the guitar school after Catharina’s death. Catharina is buried at Brompton Cemetery, London.She owned many guitars herself and selected others for her pupils, often with her label inside. One - in splendid condition - was advertised for sale in The Times in 1939.

Arranged for solo classical guitar 3 pp intermediate difficultyMaurice Ravel (1875 -1937) Ravel was born in the Basque region of France and much of his work shows a Spanish influence (this, together with his interest in jazz has produced some exceptional guitar transcriptions). He was a pupil of Faure and at first fell, like many contemporary composers, under Debussy's spell. However, his ascetic and intellectual bents produced from the start a refinement of composition and orchestration, and development of melody, all his own. Later music shows a fondness for the rhythmic features of jazz, and thoughtful incorporation of the innovations of modern music – strong dissonance, atonality etc. Kaddisch (1914) is one of two pieces based on Hebrew songs that Ravel wrote for solo voice and piano.

Isaac Manuel Francisco Albéniz y Pascual (Spanish pronunciation: [iˈsak alˈβeniθ]; 29 May 1860 – 18 May 1909) was a Spanish virtuoso pianist, composer, and conductor. He is one of the foremost composers of the Post-Romantic era who also had a significant influence on his contemporaries and younger composers. He is best known for his piano works based on Spanish folk music idioms. Isaac Albéniz was close to the Generation of '98.Transcriptions of many of his pieces, such as Asturias (Leyenda), Granada, Sevilla, Cadiz, Córdoba, Cataluña, Mallorca, and Tango in D, are important pieces for classical guitar, though he never composed for the guitar. Some of Albéniz's personal papers are held in the Library of Catalonia.As one of the leading composers of his era, Albéniz's influences on both contemporary composers and on the future of Spanish music are profound. As a result of his extended stay in France and the friendship he formed with numerous composers there, his composition technique and harmonic language influenced aspiring younger composers such as Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. His activities as conductor, performer and composer significantly raised the profile of Spanish music abroad and encouraged Spanish music and musicians in his own country.Albéniz's works have become an important part of the repertoire of the classical guitar, many of which have been transcribed by Francisco Tárrega, Miguel Llobet and others. Asturias (Leyenda) in particular is heard most often on the guitar, as are Granada, Sevilla, Cadiz, Cataluña, Córdoba, Mallorca, and Tango in D. Gordon Crosskey and Cuban-born guitarist Manuel Barrueco have both made solo guitar arrangements of all the eight-movements in Suite española. Selections from Iberia have rarely been attempted on solo guitar but have been very effectively performed by guitar ensembles, such as the performance by John Williams and Julian Bream of Iberia's opening Evocation. The Doors incorporated Asturias into their song Spanish Caravan; also, Iron Maiden's To Tame a Land uses the introduction of the piece for the song bridge. More recently, a guitar version of Granada functions as something of a love theme in Woody Allen's 2008 film Vicky Cristina Barcelona.The theme from Asturias was incorporated or adapted in several soundtracks including the 2008 horror film Mirrors, composed by Javier Navarrete, and the Netflix TV show Godless, composed by Carlos Rafael Rivera.In 1997 the Fundación Isaac Albéniz was founded to promote Spanish music and musicians and to act as a research centre for Albéniz and Spanish music in general.A street in Quito, Ecuador, is named after him.
