At 15, he became a protégé of jazz guitarist Joe Pass, and later studied classical guitar under Vincent Macaluso and at California State University, Northridge under Ronald Purcell, with a master class under Andrés Segovia. Brad was featured performing Gerald Wilson's Sonata for Guitar and Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, with the composer conducting. Lenten Music, for solo guitar, is a work that reflects the various types of musical material that are the fundamental structures of each of the four movements, and these are clearly stated in the titles of each movement. The titles are in Russian and most of them correspond to their Latin equivalent; yet the language that I grew up with adds a special meaning for every musical unit: I. Phráza (Phrase); II. Ouzór (Pattern); III. Achórd (Chord); IV. Melódia (Melody). The technical aspects of the compositional process of this work are partly defined by the technical limitations that the guitar imposes on the composer. The title of the work also suggests that structural and expressive character of each piece would be very modest and simple: Lenten. Apart from this, each piece is meant to represent a certain mood or a state of mind that is influenced by personal and extramusical factors. PULSO DE LA VIDA was composed as part of my dear friend Kostas Tosidis' doctoral thesis with the title Bowing technique on the guitar.The character of the piece changes from simple and meditative to rhythmic and tension-filled, reflecting different stages of our lives.Using a C, G, D tuning for the bass strings, the guitar utilizes resonance to create sustained, cello-sounding melodies on the fourth string, complemented by harmonies on the fifth and sixth strings.The bowing technique is introduced with a continuous tremolo accompanied by an extended form of the first theme. The more dancelike and rhythmical part of the piece uses a 19/16 measure that allows us to experience a sense of disparity. Finally, the simplicity combined with a sense of completeness, but also of abandonment of the beautiful gift of life, leaves us in a state of stillness for any kind of introspection.PULSO DE LA VIDA a été composé dans le cadre de la recherche doctorale de mon cher ami Kostas Tosidis, sous le titre Bowing technique on the guitar (technique d'archet à la guitare).Le caractère de la pièce passe de simple et méditatif à rythmique et plein de tension, reflétant les différentes étapes de notre vie.La guitare, dont les cordes basses sont accordées en do, sol et ré, utilise la résonance pour créer des mélodies soutenues au son du violoncelle sur la quatrième corde, complétées par des harmonies sur les cinquième et sixième cordes.La technique d'archet est introduite par un trémolo continu accompagné d'une forme étendue du premier thème. La partie plus dansante et rythmique de la pièce utilise une mesure 19/16 qui nous permet d'éprouver un sentiment de disparité. Enfin, la simplicité combinée à un sentiment de plénitude, mais aussi d'abandon du magnifique cadeau qu'est la vie, nous laisse dans un état de tranquillité propice à toute forme d'introspection.

Taking inspiration in Isreal Kamakawiwo’ole’s Somewhere Over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World mashup, I offer an arrangement in polyrhythmic 4/4 time of What a Wonderful World for solo acoustic guitar. The arrangement has an afro-flamenco character with two tiers of rhythm. Tier one is the normal 4/4 rhythm with accents at 1 and 3. Tier two consists of accents falling on beats 2 and 2& and 3& of the 4 beat measures. Tier two can be highlighted by clapping or tapping with a table knife on a bottle at beats 2 and 2& and 3&, with the strongest accent on 3& (an upbeat). The tune is really happy and up-lifting. If there are any little folks (kids two to four years old) around listening, they will have a hard time sitting still. My grandson (two and a half) really got going when I played it for him. I can hardly resist the urge to dance to the tune while playing myself! The arrangement is in the spirit of the Canarios by Gaspar Sanz for classical guitar and is meant to have the nature of a dance. The repetitive alternating thumb and index and middle finger cycle going through the broken chords with the melody woven in works to give the arrangement an almost hypnotic character. The fingering for the right hand is given in first section and is basically the same throughout the piece. The fingering for the left hand can, I believe, be easily figured out from the tablature. The arrangement is within the reach of intermediate students of the acoustic guitar; anyone who has mastered the basics of fingerstyle fingerpicking guitar, and can be played on both nylon and steel string acoustic guitars. The short and long glissandos and the arpeggios of natural harmonics resembling the kalimba (thumb harp) together with the drone effects of the enharmonic tones in the chords give an added dash of African spice to the piece.

It is mostly played in 1st position (a few spots higher on neck), using folk-country chord voicings, with some softer jazz major 7th, major 9th, minor 9th chords. It is a fairly easy intermediate level piece (as far as technical difficulty), but can sound very professional as well. This sheet music is in Standard notation... Jane Goodall is a world-famous primatologist and anthropologist, considered the world's foremost expert on chimpanzees. She has changed the world with her studies, and continues to do so with environmental and educational activism. Brad Powell met Ms. Goodall in the early 1990s, and has composed this piece in her honor. It is a relaxing waltz style, using intermediate-level classical guitar technique, with both folk and modern jazz guitar chord voicings.
