Sometimes the composer may point us to the meaning of a piece, without actually providing it. Says Daniel Burwasser: “Catching Fireflies is an ode to the tender memories and joys of childhood. The thematic material and structure of the work reflects the immediacy and innocent fascination of a time when everything is new and exciting, and something as simple as the flashing of a firefly can capture the imagination. The opening indeed creates visions of sprightly fireflies. An animated seven-note figure, first introduced by the strings then taken up by the brass and woodwinds, suggests a dazzling nocturnal scene of children scurrying after the elusive insects. The theme rapidly transmogrifies, aided by echoing dialogues between instruments as well as abrupt percussive effects. Then, a placid lyrical interlude begins with contemplative strains. Have the catchers settled back to view the stars? Like youth itself, the segment doesn’t last and is pushed aside by a subdued version of the lead theme. This time, a lyrical melody pro- vides a whiff of melancholia, but one limned by kaleidoscopic xylophone notes. Then, a longer adagio theme develops, and while it reflects the original lyrical interlude, it soon assumes a nostalgic aura reminiscent of fifties film music. Perhaps it evokes the romantic theme from an old movie the composer attended as a youth. But the night is not over and as the tempo increases, the brass sounds a variation of the opening melody, there is a brief parenthesis of calm, then a crashing tutti puts an end to the evening activities.

Some of my favorite memories as a student in public school band include performing various arrangements of J.S. Bach. I loved sitting in the trumpet section listening across the ensemble to how the various melodic lines would rapidly fizz around from instrument to instrument.This short, two movement work is designed to foster this listening experience in your students. The first movement consists of a simple binary form, with woodwinds and brass trading off a slow melodic line. The ensemble then combines to allow for the exploration of top to bottom, back to front balance and blend without having to worry about too much technique. There are also moments of modernity in the harmonic structure designed to help anchor the movement to the present.The second movement is a fugue with a long melodic subject and two countersubjects, the point of which is to apply the listening lessons from the first movement to the more technical aspects of the second. Fugue subjects are announced with percussion entrances to focus the listening experience across the ensemble and the audience.

The show features a nautical title sequence and uses the chirpy 'Barnacle Bill' (in various versions throughout the years) as it's theme music. Its content, which follows a magazine/entertainment format, features viewer and presenter challenges, competitions, celebrity interviews, popular culture and sections on making arts and crafts items from household items. The programme has featured a number of pets including dogs, tortoises, cats, and parrots, many becoming household names. The longevity of Blue Peter has established it as a significant part of British culture and British heritage. As soon as you start to play this piece, which has been arranged to celebrate the centenary of the BBC in 2022, many memories will come flooding back and new ones made!

Adirondack Sketches was commissioned by the Town of Lake Pleasant, which is located in the southern Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, to celebrate its bicentennial. Written for the local community band (named A Pretty Good Band, Amy Winnie, director), it consists of four short movements, descriptive of my memories of places in and around my home town: 1. Sunrise over Lake Pleasant A gradual expansion of sound based on the horn call at m. 3 brings the lakeshore from predawn darkness to brilliant sunlight. 2. School Picnic at Moffit Beach A march/scherzo expresses the end-of-school exuberance of the school children. 3. Canoeing on Kunjamuck Creek A gently flowing passacaglia, with hints of arch form, depicts the calm, wooded creek. 4. Stephen Cai for Concert BandProgram Notes:MUSIC As a sequel to Pigstep by Lena Raine and Exodus by Ernest Gold, I have decided to take on the challenge of arranging the ever-famous glitch hop song, Monody by Christian Buettner (known more prominently by his online alias, TheFatRat).Similarly to Pigstep, my first arrangement, I ran into the challenge of instrumentation, as Monody’s original soundtrack almost entirely consisted of electronic instruments. However, I used the same technique I did with Pigstep to overcome this problem: assign basslines to low brass, treble melodies to mid-range instruments, and high parts to upper woodwinds. Unlike Pigstep, Monody pushed me to be more creative with the percussion section, as I had to puzzle out recreating all of the numerous sound effects throughout the piece with traditional percussion instruments. I even decided to notate a conch shell line for the war horn present at the beginning and the coda! At the end, however, it all came together nicely, and I came to realize that both this song and the process of arranging it represent a journey, albeit in different contexts. The word “Monody†refers to, in a literal sense, a song sung to mourn one’s death, which accordingly fits with my view of the piece as a journey where the narrator loses their companion. Writing the introduction measures (M.22) carried me through the genuine feelings of embarking on a mythical undertaking as the original soundtrack intends to portray. The lively middle section (M.70) was enjoyable to write as well, because the music itself is upbeat and full of energy. Finally, arranging the solo section was probably my most memorable experience. The slow and subtly melancholic character of the melody (the oboe solo) very closely alludes to the narrator’s mourning, and the enchanting lyrics originally written for this section further confirms their loss:    I still hear you in the breeze,    See your shadows in the trees;    Holding on, memories never change. The chords and harmonies that the original soundtrack provided were relatively simple to transcribe, and I found joy complementing them with luscious percussion effects. This is my interpretation of Monody, and I believe that it would be best performed as a journey, one which we can relate to as it encompasses the theme of loss; a monody. ARTWORK I also took up the challenge of creating original cover artwork for Monody, and I have to say, my level of appreciation for artists of any kind has skyrocketed ever since that endeavor. It took nearly two months of watching YouTube tutorials, onerous idea crunching, and using my sister’s drawing tablet, but I had nevertheless completed it with advice from some of my more experience peers (including my sister).
