It opens with a short introduction utilizing the opening notes of the melody, proceeding to its first full statement in the upper woodwinds. The second presentation features the trumpets and xylophone followed by a statement in the bass instruments while the melody Long, Long Ago appears in the upper voices. A contrasting legato section follows, succeeded by a more rhythmic statement in woodwinds and trumpets. The melody then appears in the alto saxophones with a contrasting idea in upper woodwinds. A marcato statement of the melody appears as a three-bar phrase with a staccato accompaniment. The final section utilizes the style of the opening measures and is expanded to bring the work to a final climactic conclusion.

Starting quietly, the sound slowly grows to a strong B section, then marches away into the distance. This G-minor work is ideal for any concert or festival. DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Medium Easy / Grade 2 / suitable for middle school or small high school bands FEATURES: - All winds (including tuba!) have melody at least once. - Simple trombone parts (generously cross-cued in Horn, Euphonium) - 2nd Clarinet remains below break. CHALLENGES: - Use of dotted-eighth/sixteenth rhythm in melody. - Use of low register for clarinets. (low E, F, G#) - Tuba solo (cued in other parts) - Muted Trumpet 1 solo (unison line with other instruments) - Dynamics; articulations; a few 16th-notes in all parts. Originally the Violin Concerto in E major, D.53, Guiseppe Tartini’s concerto was transcribed for the piccolo trumpet by Maurice André and has remained a popular repertoire choice for trumpet players ever since. All three movements of the work are here arranged in the key of Eb (not D!) for piccolo trumpet in Bb and wind band (including 2 flute parts, oboe, bassoon, 3 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 alto saxes, tenor sax, bari sax, 2 trumpets, 2 horns, 2 trombones, BC and TC euphonium, tuba, and timpani). Performance time is generally around 10 or 11 minutes. Please note that the parts for the accompanying ensemble are at an early intermediate level, as indicated on this page, but the solo part for piccolo trumpet is very challenging.
