Kelly Middle School Band in Springdale, Arkansas, which happens to be the school where my life in band began.This is a slow, melodic piece, working to develop phrasing and musical expression. Though the flute has occasional 2 note chords, only the clarinet and trumpet have divided parts. It calls for 8 percussionists but could be played by 7 if needed (and if you have a coordinated player to jump quickly between suspended cymbal and crash cymbals). Amazing Grace is THE consummate melody that has had the ability to move nearly every person that feels it's emotive, poignant notes. I treated this melody to full wind ensemble greatness, including gorgeous melodic percussion, for an ensemble I put together for my band director's funeral, consisting of former students of all ages from his 30+ years of service. This ensemble included students of the four band directors playing, me included. Giving rise to the influence Tom Orear had on our students indirectly. This piece fits in almost any situation where moving music is needed, even a thoughtful closer. Euphonium and trumpet present together first and it finishes with a moving flugelhorn solo interweaved with multiple instrument groups in a tremendous chime-filled finish. Title includes and 8 X11 format score and 11 X 17 format large score.
