Published by John McAllister (A0.778226). Pitt Street Bridge was commissioned by the Moultrie Middle School Band to be premiered at the 2020 SCMEA Conference. The remains of the Pitt Street Bridge lie in the Intercoastal Waterway and in what is now called Pickett Bridge Recreation Area. It is within walking distance from the middle school, and it is an integral part of Mt. Pleasant’s history. Originally designed as a trolley bridge that connected Sullivan’s Island and Mount Pleasant, Pitt Street Bridge is now a haven for recreation and relaxation. The lively melodies throughout the piece depict the festive activities that take place on Pitt Street Bridge. The piece opens as though one is standing on the Pitt Street Bridge, gazing out at the immensely beautiful surroundings. Slow and serene as the sun blankets the harbor and the marsh. The bridge has a tremendous history, dating back to the revolutionary war, which is where the melody begins. Deconstructed from part of Sir Peter Parker, a song about the Battle of Sullivan’s Island. A distant memory, this melody will find itself in many ways throughout (three notes rising diatonically followed by a falling 3rd). The woodwinds pattern in the opening (which also appears throughout), represents the ripples in the water, flowing gently back and forth. The military past of the bridge is hinted at in two ways. The snare in the opening, reminiscent of the rudimental style and several harmonies throughout that hint at an Americana style. As the piece picks up tempo, the hustle and bustle of 1920s Charleston comes to life. Harmonically, everything is still built off of the foundation of the original tune, but now we’re in bright and joyous times and people are transported to and from the island in the Roarin’ 20s. The optimism abounds until the climax of the piece as the bridge (musically speaking), fades into the past. Variations on a Canarian Hymn grade 4, duration 11:00 was commissioned and composed for the Banda Muncipal of Tenerife, Spain, Filipe Neri, conductor. They premiered it on June 25, 2017. The American premiere was March 21, 2019 by the University of Wisconsin River Falls Symphony Band, Kristin Tjornehoj, Conductor.The Canary Islands is a region of Spain. The anthem used in the Canaries for local official occasions is an adaptation of a local folk song called Arrorró (Lullaby) by Teobaldo Power (1848 – 1884). Tenerife is the largest and most populated island of the seven Canary Islands. Tenerife has a special relation to Columbus and the New World as he first stopped in Tenerife on each of his passages before sailing to the New World. There is a plaque in the center of Tenerife city depicting this.Variations on a Canarian Hymnis in the classictheme and variations form, startingwith a presentation of the folk song in its entirety, then following with six variations of the folk song. Each variation displays different colors and moods of the symphonic band. The triumphal ending depicts the strength of the Canarian people. The piece features several instruments, some with extended solos including: flute, oboe, alto saxophone, horn, trumpet, trombone, clarinet, English horn and timpani. There are several cues in the parts to cover certain instruments that may not be available, such as English horn.

East Texas, A Bear Hunt, the third of five movements from A Texas Symphony, is a musical illustration of an actual two day bear hunt that took place in 1906 in the Big Thicket. The hunting party consisted of 10 hunters led by Texas Legendary Hunters, Ben Lilly and Bud Hooks, and 8 hunting hounds. The music opens with a joyful fiddle theme representing nighttime around the campfire. As the night falls, the music quietens and percussion instruments (cabasa and woodblock) introduce crickets, woodpeckers and nighttime sounds. A rainstick and plucked strings bring the nighttime rain. With the morning, ascending strings herald the sunrise, with solo woodwinds bringing birdsong. The hunt theme is introduced by the brass. The bear theme is played by the bassoon, who is surrounded by bees, played by dissonant strings. As the hunt begins, the bear becomes alarmed, then the chase ensues. The high point of the chase arrives with an orchestra hit. The piece concludes with a triumphant return to the campsite. This fun piece is enjoyed by musicians and audiences for the fun melodies and unusual percussion sounds, length approx 12 minutes..

It falls in the easy category and should be able to be accomplished by players as young as first, maybe second year. It goes through a few iterations of the melody and passes it around many times from each instrument to the next. You can choose to swing all or part of it in order to sound more like the original. I didn't choose to notate that to make it more accessible to younger players. Suggested combinations: Brass Quintet Woodwind Quintet (mix-match of flute, oboe, clarinet including bass, alto saxophone, tenor sax, baritone sax) Woodwind Quintet (standard - flute, oboe, horn, clarinet, bassoon) Saxophone Quintet Mix-match between brass and woodwinds Full Band - as a flexible instrumentation ensemble This piece falls into my larger chamber music initiative that seeks to create accessible, ready to play arrangements and compositions to get young musicians PLAYING MUSIC with others. Because it is so adjustable, many different combinations can be used in order to facilitate music making. A great example, a middle school band director can teach the piece as a full ensemble piece, then break the group into smaller groups (i.e. flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, bass clarinet.. or whatever works with the band director's instrumentation!).
