The title is derived from the city of Bergamo in the Italian Alps and serves as a tribute to French Baroque harpsichordists. It is comprised of 4 movements: Prélude, Menuet, Clair de lune, and Passepied. Clair de lune (moonlight) is the most famous movement of the Suite Bergamasque. Its simple beauty is without rival. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1444294). Augusta Mary Anne Holmès (16 December 1847 – 28 January 1903) was a French composer of Irish descent. In 1871, Holmès became a French national and added the accent to her last name. She wrote the texts to almost all of her vocal music herself, including songs, oratorios, the libretto of her opera ('La Montagne noire') and the programmatic poems for her symphonic poems including 'Irlande' and 'Andromède'. Despite showing talent at the piano, she was not allowed to study at the Paris Conservatoire, but took lessons privately. Like other female composers from the nineteenth century including Fanny Mendelssohn and Clara Schumann, Holmès published some of her earlier works under a male pseudonym (Hermann Zenta) because women in European society at that time were not taken seriously as artists and were discouraged from publishing. 'Clair de Lune' is the second of the 'Trois Petites Pièces' for flute and piano, composed in 1896, bring together the homelands dear to Holmès’ heart: Ireland, her country of origin, and France, her country of adoption. Arranged for concert band as part of an ongoing project to bring more music by women composers into the worldwide repertoire.

Written in the style of nocturne, it is one of the most famous songs in Debussy's work. And further, an opening section as fade-in effect and an ending section extending the aftertaste time are added. All of them are used for creating new attractive of this song. And, I am also inspired by the title “A sentimental promenade which had been named at the time of publication in 1900-1901. There are many weak sounds throughout this song, but each phrase requires a rich expression centered on romanticism. Full score and complete parts are provided. The Audio Clip is of the premiere performance by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Concert Band in 1990. After a bombastic opening, the work comes to a peaceful conclusion. Serves well as the first work of a first or second part in a concert setting. Of related interest is the composer's recently completed The Challenge of Beowulf: A Choral Fantasy in Three Scenes for 7 soloists, double men's chorus and piano, also offered for sale on SMP Press.

Listen to this piece hereSuite for Band took shape from two inspirations: the first, the haunting motifs of Frederic Chopin’s Etude Op. 10, No. 12, often referred to as “Revolutionary†or the “Bombardment of Warsawâ€; the second, the still-invigorating works for band of Holst, Grainger, and Vaughn-Williams. Each movement explores different aspects of Chopin’s Etude – the first in a lively dance, the second in a gentle melody, and the finale in a rush of energy that brings the work to an exciting close. Each instrument is featured at least once which makes the Suite ideal for the developing ensemble. I owe many thanks to Dr. Thomas McCauley and his bands at Montclair State University and Windhaven in 2017 for reading the work through various stages of development and for their helpful feedback.

I have always been fascinated by the beauty of the Cosmos, which has inspired many of my works. Feelings of infinite movement can be expressed musically and it seemed to me that one of the ways to do this was to end this work on a repeated phrase played in a long perdendosi, to give the impression that one is hearing the echoes of the finished phrase as the instruments stop playing. I had just started to write this work when I received a note for the Paris Observatory which gave me the news that the astronomical community had decided to name a newly discovered asteroid for Jean-Pierre Luminet. When I wrote to Jean-Pierre to congratulate him on this honour, reminding him with the Petit Prince that not everyone has their own star, I asked him if he would accept that I name this work for concert band with the full name of his asteroid: 5523 Luminet 1991 PH8. Jean-Pierre accepted my proposition by return letter : ..., not only do I not have any objection, but I would be very honoured. To be in the celestial spheres in the form of a rock and also in the form of music, what more could one ask for?
