These three pieces (The Procession, Waltzing in the Rain and Tim's Dance) are presented here as a suite, but may of course be used individually. The instrumentation is flexible, allowing for various combinations of instruments, including Clarinet Quartet/Quintet/Ensemble, Saxophone Quartet/Quintet/Ensemble and Brass Quartet/Quintet/Ensemble. All Clarinet and Bass Clarinet parts are below the break and all notes for all parts are kept within a comfortable range for Elementary Level performers. The melody is shared between Parts 1, 2, 3 and 4, so that all players of these parts have important parts! The score is shown in concert pitch. Octave displacement occurs in some parts. Part 5 is Optional. Rhythmic values used: semibreve (whole note), dotted minim (dotted half-note), minim (half-note), crotchet (quarter-note), quavers (eighth-notes). Flute, Oboe, Bells 2. clarinet (trumpet double) no playing across the break 3. Alto Sax 4. Tenor Sax (horn double) 5. Trumpet (clarinet double) 6. Horn (tenor sax double) 7. Trombone, baritone, bassoon (bass clarinet and bari sax double) 8. Tuba 9. Percussion (snare and bass drum) I include a bass clarinet/baritone TC part and a bari sax part. Measures are numbered in both score and parts. This arrangement ends with a fun waltz, I keep the horns low to work on accuracy and a big sound instead of doubling the alto part. Edition Schwalbe #6233229. Published by Edition Schwalbe (A0.1021839). Dominik Ertl was a regiment drum major with the Austrian Infantry Regiment No. 4. He also worked as an operetta conductor in Dresden, toured Germany as a violin concertist, was conductor in Danzer's Orpheum in Vienna in 1889 and concert conductor in Riga around 1893. Anton Bruckner is said to have been one of his teachers. Numerous compositions, piano reductions, dances, waltzes, polkas, marches and around 200 couplets, marches and Viennese songs have been preserved from his hand. His best-known composition is the Hoch- und Deutschmeister-March from 1880, which is still one of the great traditional Austrian marches today.

The Nutcracker Suite is an interpretation of the music from Tchaikovsky's 1892 ballet by American pianist, composer and bandleader Duke Ellington and his long-time collaborator and orchestrator, Billy Strayhorn. Recorded for Columbia Records in 1960, it features jazz interpretations of nine movements from the original work in various styles and in a slightly different order, including more exotic instruments than would normally be found in the jazz ensemble:Overture Toot Toot Tootie Toot (Dance of the Reed-Pipes)Peanut Brittle Brigade (March)Sugar Rum Cherry (Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy)Entr'acteVolga Vouty (Russian Dance)Chinoiserie (Chinese Dance)Dance of the Floreadores (Waltz of the Flowers)Arabesque Cookie (Arabian Dance)Now fully arranged for concert band, without piano (as Ellington didn't actually play very much on the original recording) this is a difficult work, but players and audiences will love it - starring roles are given to most of the band at various points and the original solos played by the Ellington orchestra have been included for authenticity but chords added as well, should your players wish to make their own music. The Oboe part doubles Cor Anglais in a few movements, but this is cued if not available and important moments are also sensitively cross-cued throughout should the ensemble not be complete - absolutely essential, however, are the drums and bass, who are ever-present throughout and provide the beating heart of the work.
